Yeah, I gotta problem with that!

Hey Lee, did you choose to play goalie or did you just kind of fall into it?
It found me. It was certainly not my first choice, but a captain suggested I try it. I was afraid of it, but once I tried it, I loved it and never would play any other position now. It suits me well.
Playing goalie is the best. I've played since 7. I started a roller league at 6 and was a skater, but the next year I think there was a need for a goalie/I wanted to do it. Started ice hockey at 9, played A/AA onward.
Huge perk of being a goalie? Never pay for drop in. Or rat hockey is what you crazy Chicago/IL people call it. During college on break when I was back in Michigan, I could hit anywhere from 1-5 nights of drop in hockey a week and not pay a dime.

A better perk of being a goalie is - being a rent a goalie. Getting paid to play hockey. I make about $200-300 a week (It's a part time night job. You play when you feel like it. Making 25-55$ a skate) It's all cash money, and boy is it lovely.
OK, how do I get that started? That would be awesome.

It depends on where you live. Try using Google and see if there are any rent-a-goalie companies in your area. If there is, apply and hopefully you'll get accepted. If there are none in your area, try marketing yourself. The better you perform, the more often you'll get called back. Leave your name with arena managers and things like that.
I always enjoy playing hockey, and when I can make cash from it, it just makes it that much more fun.
Judging by his avatar, move to Toronto.
You know you want to anyway!!![]()

I get emails all the time for games. That's how I broke my foot, by playing too much. I will look into this.
Someday.![]()
Not to mention it's all cash money.
Do you wear a crazy mask like your avatar?
Yeah, but our stuff is much more expensive and we get a lot of injuries. But yeah, it is THE most fun position out there if you're so inclined. Where do you skate? I go to Robert Crown in Evanston, Johnny's IceHouse and Heartland in Lincolnwood.

That's cool. Do you wear a crazy mask like your avatar? I did notice that goalies get to play for free on most open hockey. I then saw how much and expensive the equipment is! I played goalie in football and a little wicket keeper in cricket when I was in High school, but will do a few 'semesters' of clinics to see how I do learning to be a skater...
True, I dropped a ton on my equipment during my travel playing days, but I also keep things for a long time. My pads are the original Vaughn Velocity SRs. I think I blew all my teenage savings at the annual Perani's mega sale for those.
I actually don't skate at all in Chicago. I went to college here, so during that time I never bothered to bring my equipment to IL. I just skated back home in MI. Now that I'm working full time, though, I've considered it. Thing is, I don't have a car. Johnny's... East? I guess has locker rental, which is quite appealing. I'd probably have to be married to their rink or start Zip Car-ing around, both I've thought quite a lot about. I want to get back to skating regularly instead of once or twice every couple months when in MI. No way I'd be able to (or want to) take my equipment on the CTA haha.
The hockey director at my local rink said I can start going to hockey clinics, only thing is it needs full protective equipment. $270 later and it looks like I'll be going there next Wednesday!
Very excited, and yes, I do accept that I could and probably will get injured playing, hopefully I can use the time on the clinics to just make sure I have decent technique and get myself prepared to take hits if they happen. After that, I just need to always remember to warm up and cool down properly, because the one time I didn't, a few years ago playing rugby, I hurt a knee (which has been better for a while now).
