Well, it seems he was initially included in the Europa League squad, only to have since been left out due to injury (allegedly)

Any Liverpool fans out there excited about the new season? I preach patience. Things on the transfer market don't look too good at present but lets hope our owners and new manager have a plan because it would seem every day there's news of another one of our starting 11 players seemingly on the move...

I am not expecting much. My main hope is that Brendan Rogers proves to be a more effective manager at Liverpool than Hodgson and Dalglish. We can build from that.

You've been in Alaska for too long – from there, anything south of the Canadian border will look like Central America. ;)

Exactly. :D

Spain out of the football, I know it's only the Olympics but still, after all the victories in the last few years, I expected a bit more.

Well, I wonder what that means for future spanish Europe Cup / World Cup teams. Fabregaz and the like will not be young forever and then those that fell out of the Olympics will then be (or maybe not) those that will fill the holes in the squad.

Btw Uruguay has the cheater from World Cup 2010 in the squad who managed to get their team going forward to the next round by lifting his arm in the very front of the box line, while it actually had to be (I think) Senegal to win.

Did someone see GB vs Brazil, yesterday? The British ladies did quiet a good job, I think - or was it just Brazil being bad... I had expected more from them.

well, i think some of it, rather presumptuously i admit, is also based on quality of life and where you subconsciously think/believe mexico belongs . on average the USA and Canada have a higher quality of life than Mexico and, i for one, always lump them in with central america i.e. 3rd world countries. but obviously that is lazy and wrong. so i have to stop and think about it as well... ;)

I like how you name that incident. It was Ghana, and I deeply despised that guy! Glad I forgot his name actually.

And I wouldn't read too much into the spanish squad being sent home already..

The player in question was Luis Suarez – to be fair to him though he's kept himself out of trouble since.

HaHaHa! That was the only name coming to my mind..well he's got an attitude..that b****!
That game was pure drama, Ayew missed the penalty and seems to suffer since then. Missed the very important penalty during the last Africa Cup too when I remember correctly.

Haha, Suarez Hand again, right now! :D (and again the referee saw it and he looks like "me??? never!")

Edit: and again! a yellow for him this time!

I'd say hands down, hands up for Suarez winning the gold medal in Handball! :D

Suarez caught plenty of hate from the home fans, but it's a good result against a Uruguay side I would have expected to play much better.

The favorites for the gold have to be Brazil, despite them still looking for their first olympic gold in football.

i admire the guy's ability, but he couldn't be more of a douche.

Oh I dunno...Djibril Cisse, Emre, Maradona, Barton, Di Canio...there are a number of guys out there who, in my opinion, clearly eclipse Suarez in terms of being standout jerks. He's very hot-headed though, and prone to foolish outbursts. He works very hard and is not a primadona like Ibrahimovic or Tevez, if not quite on the same level.

So Ferdinand (black) uses colloquial language on twitter to another black player (Ashley Cole) which is on the face of it more racist than what Suarez used and nobody says anything? And Suarez (who does also have the language barrier to content with) uses a word (negrito) that in his LANGUAGE means 'mate' or 'pal' and he gets banned BECAUSE LFC messed up and hired a 'media' QC rather than a criminal QC. So when you feel a terrible injustice, and feel like someone got you done (and the 120 page report actually cited Evra's conflicting evidence), you would shake their hand? You don't know anything about sport if you think that...

I love a good racism debate. But when a debater has an emotional stake in the parties involved (e.g. your team's player), it just gets totally overdone and sad. It literally depressed me checking facebook after it happened and seeing all of my friends (mix of Manc / Liv) with absolutely zero objectivity - it was just pathetic.

You can sympathise with both parties (language barriers, taking it personally, caught in the moment, instantaneous reactions). However when the accuser has a history of 'mummy, mummy, look what he said'... Either way, it's done - over. And it wrecked our season (not that it needed wrecking).

They didn't? Guess you missed my earlier post with this link in it ;)

We'll see. If they give Ferdinand an 8 game ban then I will take it all back. Besides, my point was about the media and the general chatter which in the Ferdinand case was ABSOLUTELY not as loud as it was with Suarez.

Steven Pienaar is on his way back to Everton. Hopefully his loan spell play from last year continues to carry over. I don't see why it wouldn't though he's always been a pretty solid player, I just don't think Redknapp knew how to use him for while he was at Spurs.

Nuri Sahin and Santi Cazorla transfers are indeed looking promising after all. The latter is set to have a medical shortly. The former has apparently already signed and will wear the number 30 jersey.

So thats Podolski, Giroud, Cazorla and Sahin for the price region of Andy Carroll. I hope Wenger pulls it off and more importantly, it pays off this season.

Still think we need one more defender to fill in when the injuries come. Was hoping for Javi Martinez but at a 40m Euro asking price thats never gonna happen.

on paper this is perhaps one of the best Arsenal transfer windows since a few years:
Podolski, Giroud, Cazorla
Sahin on loan

i just hope they deliver and fit in the squad fast enough

Sahin can play an excellent deep lying playmaker which is kinda a bad match for the Real madrid squad

That's great! So finally you can get your hopes up! There are of course a lot of question marks so to speak, but hopefully it pays off. One must be patient though, this team has to find itself first (?)..a lot of new players. Hope that Poldi get comfortable with London, he doesn't like leaving 'home'.

Barton is the Emperor of that lot...
