Both Man Utd. and Liverpool are suffering some sponsor woes...MUST is calling for a boycott of GM products, while Liverpool shirt sponsor Standard Chartered is in hot water for allegedly laundering money for Iranian banks. Standard Chartered has already lost almost a quarter of it's value overnight upon the publication of the story.
IF the allegations are true, it would likely mean that Liverpool's lucrative sponsorship deal with them goes up in smoke, certianly in the long term if not immediately. Liverpool will have little choice but to kill the deal; FSG will have their hands full sorting this one out. But this is the risk you take when courting lucrative sponsorship deals from wealthy multinationals.
As for the Man U situation, the Glazers absolutely robbed GM with their shirt sponsor deal. It's hilarious, I can't believe the amount of money they are getting out of it - and neither can GM apparently, they seem stunned. The Glazers are fleecing the fans and fleecing their sponsors. And I presume that as long as they keep Alex Ferguson on board and keep winning stuff they will continue to get away with it.
The sad thing is, I expect both Man U and Liverpool fans to keep blowing good money on shirts and probably filling the stadia every week too. Boycotts never work.
