I would think it's more the case that a manager shouldn't be discussing the future of his players with random members of the public, particularly if he's not yet spoken to the player(s) in question.

It was a rather bizarre error by Hodgson, you would think that a manager of his experience would know better.

True. But Woy is usually communicative when engaged and often tells it like it is...to anyone and everyone (an admirable trait to me). That said, that trait will probably come through less now and he will become another PR robot from fear of the British media.

I don't think there's anything wrong with his being open and approachable – and there are others who could do with being a bit more so – but there are some topics of conversation that should be off limits, and some things you should keep to yourself.

As a purely off the top of my head example, imagine a player whose team mate was recently banned and fined after racially insulting an opponent. He might be well advised not to go using his twitter account to publicly take a pop at the FA over it and call them a 'bunch of *****'.

In other news, I reckon Leighton Baines' England career is looking a bit brighter today. :D

Baines is the future anyway. Cashley Cole is also quickly approaching his sell-by date.

Cazorla can scorela. Walcott not making Wenger's decisions easy. Also glad Giroud got his first goal in the EPL.

USA international striker (and ex-Tiger) Jose Altodire is having a blistering start to the season with AZ, scoring 9 goals in 9 games. I want to see some more of that. :)

Well you will not want to see more of this I can assure you.

This weekend it was back to red cards again after last week I thought we had learnt what was what. This time AZ players got two red cards in two minutes. Jozy Altidore was given both of his (2x Yellow) for arguing with the referee. I mean getting one card for arguing is stupid, but two in a minute is criminal, as it puts your team down a man.
Maybe he took lessons from Joey Barton?

Ajax had trouble against their boogie side Utrecht, 1 - 1 at home. PSV scored 4 against NAC Breda.

Pardew and Pulis attracting attention away from their players. Mind, RVP could do with a rest, he's not playing well.

Edit - good old Uncle Howard; no action re RVP. The arm didn't look bent on contact - Fellaini got a yellow v Wigan Athletic - so I could understand a one match ban for 2 yellows, but has to be straight red re retrospective?

Other news; Paddy Power is already paying out re the winner of this season's FA Comedy Award.;)

Cheers,
OW

His disciplinary record for the USA is pretty good as far as I recall. It's pretty stupid to get two yellows in one game for arguing though. Getting one is one thing, but after that you'd think he be smart enough to keep his mouth shut.

However, the lad didn't score anywhere near nine goals for us.

It's hard to say whether he just didn't adapt to the (obviously ace) Championship well, or whether he's developed since then, or whether the Eredivisie fits his style better. He's getting towards what should be his peak years by the World Cup though, so I expect improvement.

I seem to remember seeing him getting a couple of bookings for talking back to officials when he was with us, you'd like to think he'd have lost that with a bit of age and experience. Apparently not, though.

He was with us during our second Premier League season. I think he would have fared better in the Championship, but the Eredivisie certainly seems to be suiting him.

Anyway, he seemed to like it here as this clip from back in the day demonstrates (complete with the ubiquitous Humber Bridge-side interview anyone with the slightest connection to Hull has to do :D).

It is extremely naughty of me to forget Jozy played for the Tigers when you were in the Premier League. It does make me curious as to the differences between the Eredivisie and the Championship. I assume that the latter is a little more pacy and physical, but I haven't watched either enough to make a fair judgment.

It's like the Hull version of the Sydney Opera House. :D

By the by, I've felt that Klinsmann has not really rated Altidore, and he has offered the following on Altidore's somewhat surprising exclusion from our latest round of World Cup Qualifiers:

"I communicated with Jozy that I was not happy about his performances with us, maybe even over the last 14 months. Jozy can do much, much better," said Klinsmann.
"The reason he is not coming in is mainly about performances in Jamaica and at home (against Jamaica), and also in training. Also some certain things that went on in the May-June camp," he said.

So I stand corrected, and Jozy does seem to be showing a bit of a bad attitude. I'm sure Klinsmann was not happy to hear about the latest sending off for AZ either - two yellows in one match for arguing with the ref is bad enough in a league match, but you can't afford that kind of behavior at all in an international tournament. He needs to shape up.

Coyle's sacking is actually great news as he was always a favourite for the Scotland job but the SFA couldn't hope to match English wages (or pay the termination fee). This should now let them sack George Burley.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have announced a new sponsorship deal with payday loan sharks Wonga – there had been word of this over the past few days, and it hadn't gone down too well with some supporters who weren't keen on being associated with such a grubby brand. *cough* Cash Converters *cough*

One question though was whether it was just a shirt deal, or if the stadium naming rights were also to be included - the ground formally known as St James' Park is officially known these days as the Sports Direct Arena of course, much to the chagrin of supporters. It turns out that Wonga have indeed bought the naming rights, and have announced that the ground will now be called… St James' Park.

It seems that the idea is to try to placate those who would object to the Wonga sponsorship. A potentially clever move on their part, and one that is likely to attract a lot of positive publicity – we'll see if it wins the fans over any.

Never heard of Wonga (? Wonka comes to mind) but that's a sweet move actually. And Sports Direct Arena..really? Would have laughed out loud if it wasn't so sad.

Never heard of Wonga
Basically, they offer short term loans to those who need to get their hands on some quick cash. APR on said loans is an eye-watering 4,214%, and they have a reputation for preying on the financially desperate.

The Stadium name is a nice move on their part, but it's hard not to be cynical about their motives in trying to win over supporters who are objecting to a controversial sponsorship. Basically, they're not really the sort of company that you want your club to be getting into bed with. A bit like Cash Converters, actually.

I have to think the move is less an example of generosity and more of a realization that "Wonga Arena" would never, ever be acceptable to the fans. But thank goodness they didn't do it anyway.
