WongArena

I'd like it more than Sports Direct Arena
And yes it's 100% calculated, but at least the outcome (stadium name, not the sponsor itself) is ok. That doesn't go without saying (?) nowadays.

Indeed, it's a rather calculated move on their part to look like the good guys.

The club's response to the criticisms has been to emphasize Wonga's financial commitment to the club and how it will move Newcastle FC forward. But they completely fail to address concerns over where the money is coming from. It's an extremely self-interested viewpoint.

The fact is, it is hard to find a big, deep-pocketed sponsor without skeletons in the closet. The Premier League has more than a few. But Newcastle needs to show at least a little more social responsibility here. (I'm in finger-wagging mode now )

It's certainly rather galling to see some of the North-East's richest men lend their approval to a company who make their money by preying on some of the poorest. By remarkable coincidence, Wonga has chosen to sponsor a club in the region which has the highest personal insolvency rate in the UK.

It should be mentioned too that Wonga are currently Blackpool's shirt sponsor and also have a deal with the Football League as well, and if memory serves they also have their logo adorning Hearts' polyester rags north of the border too. That's a lot of shirts.

They do, and it's awful. It's one of the instances where I think sympathetic colouring would actually pay dividends with the fans (such as green and white Coca-Cola branding with Celtic) rather than our-brand-identity-at-all costs mentality.

Ugggh.

And while not agreeing with the methods Wonga use to generate income, I don't see how they are any worse than Newcastle's former sponsors Northern Rock who's spectacular collapse cost every taxpayer in the UK.

Clearly the only acceptable course of action is for all sponsor logos to be smote from shirts full stop.

Columbus recently went that route - due to the fact that we failed to attract a sponsor. But now we have Barbasol on board, of course.

I like the idea of sponsor-less shirts though.

That's what I liked most about Barcelona (except "game-philosophy" and the city itself) and what they unfortunately gave away for tons o' cash. Was / is always a great unique feature.

I am a big curious, if Germany will disgrace itself tonight or, if it will have a certain win, one would expect (or should we expect a 2:0 at these times, for the impression that the media gives on how bad the Irish play, while still not giving up, because of great fans and believe in their irishness itself ;-) ?)

Paul McShane isn't playing. That won't end well for Ireland. :p

Incidentally, and carrying on our recent discussion on sponsors – a black mark against the Irish FA who are (as far as I'm aware) the only international side to have flogged sponsorship space on their shirt (albeit just on replicas).

and it didn't end very well ... it now hurts even more considering my austrians lost in a rather close game in Vienna

I'm sursprised they weren't able to keep up that mentality they had against Germany in the today's game. After all there were nine players from the Bundesliga on the pitch.

Netherlands 3 Vs Andorra 0

Well the Netherlands delivered a workman like victory over Andorra in Rotterdam last night.
Rafael van der Vaart scored, then Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored all with the first 15 minutes, and it looked like there was going to be a large score.
But no the team played a very controlling passing game without any real threat to score.
Just after the begin of the second half Ruben Schaken scored from a short distance.

Some players were rested because of the match out in Roumania.

Robin van Persie was not in action last night, he was being saved for the match Tuesday.

"game-philosophy" - you'd love it if they were your team though.

control, control, control.

sorry, meant besides instead of except  actually I'm there right now :D

I grew up with Luis Enrique, Kluivert and all the dutch players...they had always great and consistent style.

Besides, we're having a little dog-fight next cup round patchyderm..yay! :)

The more cynical amongst you would have noticed that I'm not posting much these days and that's coincided with Rangers demotion to the 3rd division, cue name-calling and glory-hunter tags.

Like Lord Blackadder's exile to Alaska, sending me to Middlesbrough for a year obviously didn't appease my paymasters and I've been farmed out to the north of Scotland where men are men, sheep are worried and 3G/wifi is a pipe dream.

So due to the lack of information I can only assume that Scotland beat Wales at the weekend and Craig Levein is still in a job, I can't seriously entertain that Wales could have won that match and Levein would still be in charge. Right?

A timely comment, since I just moved back to my ancestral stomping grounds of Cleveland! Lady Blackadder and myself piled as much of our possessions as would fit in the car and struck out for Cleveland two Thursdays ago. The distance was nearly equivalent to a car trip from John o' Groats to Kandahar :)eek:) and it took us the last 11 days, partially due to a breakdown 240 miles from any town and some rather nasty weather in British Columbia.

But now I'm back in the Eastern time zone, where Premier League matches are not on at 3:30am, and everything is cheaper. I miss the mountains though, but not the weather or the moose/bison on the roads. :D

I wonder if Trappatoni is any better off at this point, both Scotland and Ireland's fans seem to feel that things are pretty stale for their national sides.

USA beat Antigua and Barbuda in our last qualifier, but not convincingly. Our qualification campaign is still on track, but fans are nervous, we need to see some better performances.

looks like Ireland isn't alone with suffering a humilation against germany

3:0 at half time with _zero_ swedish goal chances .. and only 3 german goals is rather flattering towards the swedes

on the positive side Austria, for once. is a goal ahead against kazachstan

great game in Berlin! Germany 4 - 0 Sweden. No wait, it's 4-4...but at least they played it down precisely. Café King, anyone  :D
