Probably rested. Either that or Wenger wanted someone who could keep up with the pace of Hazard, Moses and Oscar on the counter. Kos saved us last week but was responsible for both goals today.

Im glad we lost now early on because it means they'll hopefully learn their lesson and realise there's still work to be done.

To add insult to injury Spurs won at OT.

*sigh*

I hate football.

Columbus 3-2 Philadelphia

An important win for the Crew, but a mixed bag as a performance. The winning goal was 8 feet offside, so let's get that out of the way right now, we were very lucky on that. An excellent offensive display from the Crew overall (two goals for Arrieta), let down by a poor defensive performance. I keep repeating myself here, but I'm really worried about Chad Marshall. In 2008 he was the best defender in the league by a mile, but he's a shadow of his former self today. Physically he seems to be there, but the mental side of his game - marking, positioning, anticipation - seems to have evaporated. I'm still inclined to think that all those concussions may be catching up with him; I hope I'm wrong there.

Anyway, we still have a good shot at the playoffs. But we need to get tougher at the back, and quick.

Agger actually played today, didn't he? What do you mean "gone"?

Last I heard he was doubtful for the match, but I see he was in the squad, which is good.

More Bundesliga news is always a good thing - though in this case the news itself is far from good. Here's hoping the young man's situation improves.

According to Bild, Vukcevic may have been speeding in his C63 AMG when he crossed the center line and struck a large truck "nearly head-on". He's been placed in an artificial coma and undergone emergency surgery for unspecified but obviously life-threatening injuries. The photos of the car are horrifying.

According to Welt, the police is investigating the possibility of a "sugar shock", since he is a diabetic, which caused his car to abruptly go onto the left lane and possibly crash into the truck at the speed he was apparently going. The hospital staff fears that there will be permanent damages to his head, his situation is still critical with no sign of improvement. That makes it all the more tragic.

If you ever ever say that to a Liverpool fan when you are not hiding behind a keyboard, you should really prepare yourself for a black eye. Conversation ended. You have crossed a line.

You can't hide behind denouncing "politically correct" behavior on the one hand (Evra, Suarez, and the FA), then demand it from the rest of the world when it comes to your own painful episodes (Hillsborough). Your hypocrisy is appalling.

Dutch football this weekend produced no red cards in Eredivisie. That is the first time this season.

PSV put 6 goals in against VVV. Not that surprising as they are the bottom of the table. But those goals might help if it goes to goal difference at the end of the season.

And – best of all – Zwolle picked up their first win of the season. :)

Breaking news! Feckless cockney waster Jimmy Bullard has announced his retirement.

"In the summer I knew I wanted to give it one last crack and show people what I could do," he says. "But what I think with my strong head and what I could physically do are two different things. My head tells me I can do it, but my body tells me, no Jim you can't."

Crack is probably the wrong choice of words, Jimmy. <snort>

"My" Mainz 05 won over VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, yeah!
Wolfsburg doesn't seem to have any bit of luck at the moment.
I guess as a shame for them their women's team is doing very well. They won a recent Champions League match against a polish team with 5:1, while it could have been 7:1, if they wouldn't have changed their attitude to "ok, now just lets have fun", but on the other hand it was really fun seeing them play. Don't know, if their playing will look that smooth, exact and nice when they will Meet Olympique Lyon. (and it is the remaining 32 teams, so as usuall with women's football, there might still be quiet a number of teams that are just there to be "kicked out".)

Sorry for going off topic, but concerning the women's national teams, I actually do not enjoy the younger teams, but I watched the Under-20 World Cup and now Under-17 World Cup. While the German U-20 got 0, until they lost against USA and went for silver, the German Under-17 girls almost played as if they were amateurs (e.g. no pass landed were the other player was). (and the USA under 17 team lost 2:10 against Gambia).
Wonder what that says about the national football schools.
While taking the Under-20 teams into account for the upcoming World Cups, there seems to be a constant quality in the team of the USA, German, Japan (Ghana made a good impression, too) or it seems to maybe be even growing quality, with the chance of consolidating the recent top national teams for future World Cups. While that doesn't seem to make surprises possible, it is nice to see how women's football is consolidating.

USA international striker (and ex-Tiger) Jose Altodire is having a blistering start to the season with AZ, scoring 9 goals in 9 games. I want to see some more of that. :)

So, does this mean Jimmy still just wants to play football? ;)

Not off topic at all! I think that the quality of youth teams is pretty variable, because such teams rely more on the strength of the national talent development setup. Senior teams can be badly organized but still win because they draw on players who are veteran professionals - but the youth teams are still learning their trade and there is nothing to paper over the cracks.

Mark Hughes gets given a lot of financial support but rarely hacks it in the end. He and Christ Houghton are already putting themselves on the chopping block this season.

That's not political correctness you ignorant individual. Surely even someone clearly as morally unhinged as you can see the difference between political correctness and mocking the dead, depriving them of dignity.

Moderator Note

I'm posting this half as a moderator and half as a football fan who has enjoyed the friendly banter in the MacRumors football threads for a number of years.

I can see the current spat that's developing in this thread turning nasty so before it does I'll give you a choice...

  • Stop the bickering and we'll leave it at that.
  • Start a new thread in the PRSI thread and take your "discussion" there. I can move the posts from this thread to the new thread if you wish.
  • Carry on with the bickering and I'll have to get the other moderators involved.
We've been lucky so far as most football forums end up full of petty arguments between the rival factions. Please don't let it happen to this thread.

Bah, why did you post that after one of OllyW's posts? I was trying to avoid him!

you all should start rooting for The Wednesday.

we are so crap right now. and none of us would disagree with that... ;)

I can do that...but don't know if it would help much. Yesterday the Old Dame of German Football (Hertha BSC) lost two points after an early lead against the desperately last one Duisburg (then 1p; 3:17 goals) and could call themselves lucky in the end with the 2:2. yeah, wonder how it would be if one could decide which club to root for...

In other, more cheerful news (at least for me :D), Demel knocked Jaffa from his high horse..:D hope this won't be a one hit wonder..!

To be fair to us, our last 5 losses have all come against either a PL team, 2 of last seasons PL teams, and the current 6th and table topping teams. Still, it would have been nice to get at least one point out of those games

I know, I had a couple of quid on Hertha. Bah!

Demel knocked Jaffa from his high horse
Bah again!

:p

Edit: to avoid the thread of being reported by Jaffa for being too frivolious, I'll just state that Michael Ballack finally retired from playing football. Didn't like him too much, but somehow disliked even more how he was treated during the dawn of his versatile career (see L. Matthäus).

losing to burnley as we speak 2-1 ...

when will the head to head game get updated?
Pulled it back to 3-3 though. We lost meanwhile, and I can all but guarantee you some comical errors with hilarious consequences this weekend.

As for the Fantasy League, there's a note up saying they're checking all the weekend's scores for some reason or other. Hopefully they'll have it sorted sooner rather than later, then I can post a proper update.
