To day the only classic that we in the Netherlands have, although it has lost some of it's shine in the last few years. Not for the real fans of course, but the days of more than a 80,000 in De Kuip are long gone.

But this year both Ajax and Feyenoord are balanced quite well, in past years Ajax was far superior.

At the other end of the spectrum second PSV travel to fifteenth PEC Zwolle.

2-2 draw for Everton and Liverpool. As much as I hate to admit it the Suarez goal was legit the ref got it wrong.

Thought Suarez's celebration after the first goal was absolutely hilarious...:D

He winds me up and does go down to easily (dives) and if he got his head up in the box would be class, but still really made me chuckle :p

2-2 in the end, with the ubiquitous Eredivisie red card. ;)

Zwolle lost, but only a single goal – good as they're currently out of the bottom three on goal difference. Fingers (blue of course) crossed for them.

I had to look for that word in a dictionary.:D

One interesting fact about yesterdays match between Ajax and Feyenoord, the referee that sent off Moisander from Ajax, was the same referee that was in that controversial match between Ajax and AZ when he sent the keeper off for kicking a yob. His name Bas Nijhuis.

We were only discussing this incident a week days ago on this very forum.

The match it's self was not of the highest quality but it did have excitement, and a last minute goal.

PSV kept their title hope alive by winning ugly again.

On a general note the players and the managers are beginning to learn how to adapt to the no nonsense approach of the referees. As they all point out so long as the rules are strict for all teams in the Eredivisie their is no problems.

How do you see that young Erikson (?) player from Ajax, Happybunny? Just read the first time about him, but it seems he's rather eye-catching for quite some time already.

One of a few controversies over the weekend...

Torres sent off for picking up a second yellow for diving, when replays seem to suggest there was contact (by contact I mean a touch)

Hernandez's winner from an offside position

Suarez's tackle on Distin went unpunished

A Chelsea steward was apparently injured by objects thrown from the crowd

And racism has reared its head yet again, this time with the referee Mark Clattenburg being reported for inappropriate comments to Chelsea players, some racist in nature, presumably to Mikel

another controversial weekend... i can't help but think l**ds scum started it all last weekend...

Without really looking terribly impressive, Man Utd once again look set to make their default yearly title challenge. Chelsea and Man City both bumbling a bit despite squads that are better on paper. The red card spoiled a good match that probably had more goals in it.

A draw was more or less the right result against Everton - Suarez will simply never get calls from refs. Lee Cattermole could slice the boy in half and they'd probably give Suarez a yellow for getting in the way. He likes to turn sharply off the shoulder of defenders and while he does dive he also draws a lot of legitimate fouls.

With South American football culture being what it is, I guess I shouldn't expect Suarez to play play any differently, however much I hate the diving. Columbus' own Argentinian, Schelotto, was not exactly a diver but it didn't take much contact to bring him down.

Christian Eriksen is certainly a player for the future, he was Denmark's young player of the year 2008. He joined Ajax 2009, lastest in a very long line of players from Denmark who have graced Ajax. Since 2010 he has been a mainline player 2010/11 season 28 games 6 goals; 2011/12 33 games 7 goals; 2012/13 9 games (so far) 3 goals (so far).

Of course it is very doubtful if Ajax will be able to keep him, if one of the large clubs in Europe comes knocking. Ajax is seen as a finishing school for raw talent for the top Italian Spanish teams. :(

Ah yes, it's now called "contact", rather than a foul tackle. A foul used to be a tackle than just about left your leg attached. Now, it's simply that, contact, a simple touch

Of course that only applies if the opposition is not a South American. :D

The game's rules are definitely interpreted differently no compared with a few decades ago.

30 years ago, absolutely no attention was paid to the physical damage accrued by a career in football. These days this is taken into account to a certain degree, and it affects training, sports medicine and officiating. Contact is still allowed, but a lot less is permitted than it used to be. This probably reflects football's continued divergence from rugby, despite common roots. Rugby is a game based on contact; football permits limited contact but it is not a key component of the game.

I think legal liability has a lot to do with it these days too, of course.

lol...i mean seriously!

What. A. Match.

League Cup: Reading 5 - 7 Arsenal.

Well. That was embarrassing now wasn't it.

Seven at home vs their reserves after being 4-0 up. Looks like a long season ahead.

I need a lie down.

The question was asked though, that were there 2 minutes of stoppages in the 4 minutes of allotted time to add at the end?

I've no idea what it must have been like watching it live, but it was exhausting enough just following the live text updates on the BBC :)

Shame on all the Arsenal fans leaving at half time!

It was sort of horrible live. At 4-0, I couldn't see how we could lose. I'd have literally bet £1,000,000 on us seeing the game out.

But then they scored... and again... and again... and, well, you get the picture

Calm down everyone, we all know Arsenal will get knocked out 0-1 by Middlesbrough in the next round anyway. :p

Well I can't really argue with that one. The miracle does little to hide the glaring cracks. And I'm under no illusion we'll win it. But at least I can fully say it was a boatload of fun while it lasted and we gave the competition arguably its best game ever.
