Well the fact that Ajax lost is of no surprise, but to their credit they played good football against the best passing side in the world. In the first half they created two very reasonable chances.

This sets them up very nicely for the topper against PSV this weekend.

That was pants. Seeing Klopp almost eating that guy alive in slowmo was frightening..

In the end though I reckon Ajax were physically and mentally spent following the superhuman effort required to defeat PEC at the weekend.

They just had nothing left in the tank for Barca. ;)

That is not so far fetched as you would think.

Unlike previous seasons where both Ajax and PSV could rest their better player before a CL match, because they both had a good cushion of points in the Eredivisie. This season both Ajax and PSV are struggling a bit more, plus Ajax played PEC in Amsterdam, they could not afford to lose in front of the loyal fans.

There is probably and e-mail from Barca on it's way to Zwolle thanking them for softening up Ajax.:p

It's official PSV are a team in free fall, last night they were played off the pitch, and they couldn't make a fist.

The match was so bad that my good friend and PSV supporter had to turn off his TV to stop himself crying.
This has been coming for some time, a slow decline over the last two to three seasons. But this season well it's just pathetic, it's like everything they do or try turns to dust.

Still loving the Jurgen Klopp mean-mugging...

Jürgen Klopp said:
"It's not a good face. It's a difficult face. There was no insult. If you can apologise for your face, I do that"

That little ref must have been soiling himself.

...and with that there shall be no Invincibles this year either. Everyone has been spanked.

EDIT: Mourinho just had a slight dig at Wenger in his post-match interview. Also effectively gave the middle-finger.

Liverpool's bright start to the season was predicated on economical defending, excellent goalkeeping and the ability to hold slim leads. Yesterday's result showed the unsustainability of that approach. We need to be scoring more often. The defense is doing it's job overall, despite some obvious mistakes here and there. But you can't expect to win every game 1-0. Sill, if we can keep our defense this stingy we ought to have a a good season.

Meanwhile, in Ohio...

Columbus 3-0 Chicago

A great result against our bitter rivals after 9 straight losses. With the Crew up 1-0 in the first half, Chicago defender Bakary Soumare was sent off after a flagrant DOGSO foul on 30 minutes. Things went downhill from there for the Fire. They tired badly in the second half playing 10 v 11. Our post-Warzycha surge under Brian Bliss continues, though we are still 3(?) games out of the playoffs and I doubt we'll make it.

Great result for Jaffa's boys in a 5-goal thriller. :D Not so happy to see Koren go down hurt. :(

Vitesse 3 PEC Zwolle 0

PEC were beaten by a Vitesse side that was inspired by the Battle for Arnhem, which is celebrated every year in the city of Arnhem
Today 22 September is the Anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, to mark the event Vitesse swapped their normal yellow and black shirts, for maroon and sky blue the colours of the British Airborne units.

On the pitch Vitesse played with a passion that PEC could not match. Even trainer Ron Jans agreed, PEC will have to do a lot better in the future. He stated that there was no cause for panic, but that the team as a whole had to rebound.

It does look as if Vitesse have found a replacement for Wilfried Bony, Lucas Piazón a Brazilian scored two of Vitesse's goals and made a impression on the match.

PSV 4 Ajax 0

I officially don't understand it, on paper PSV looked to be outclassed by Ajax in every department.
But today on the pitch it was a completely different story, after and early gift of a goal after a blunder by the Ajax defense. The match was so one sided it was painful to watch, how terrible PSV were on Thursday night how fantastic the same players were this afternoon.

What a change of atmosphere 4 days ago there was doom and gloom, and now there is now singing and dancing in Eindhoven today.

PSV are firmly on top of the Eredivisie tonight.

Oh dear United, played off the park. Showed how RVP has been carrying them a lot recently. Ferdinand and Vidic are a shadow of themselves. Midfield still sorely lacking.

Irritating news on the injuries, Jaffa. I'll have to trade Koren out of the fantasy squad, and that will diminish it's ace-ness.

Man City - what can you say...sometimes they seem to be in a funk but the sheer amount of talent in their squad is mind-boggling. Anything less than a league title this season (apart from winning the Champions League) will seem a failure I'd think.

I like David Moyes. But he's in for a rough ride methinks.

City is a rollercoaster as always, but United just continues where they left last season imho. Uninspired. Seems like they don't get away with that so cheaply this year, which is a good thing.

Cue Press masturbation fest.

Learnt from the Liverpool game then - best to sit off and chase shadows from the start, midfield doesn't matter, and losing doesn't justify putting on Nani, Kagawa, or Hernandez.

Rooney made it easy for Kompany; knew he was marked and the Belgian was being allowed to go through him, why not say hello to Nastasic - dragging Kompany with him? They didn't exploit Kolarov enough, Nastasic at all - two weak points.

I don't think it's RVP carrying - his recent form hasn't been great, rather Welbeck isn't Rooney or Kagawa re spotting a pass; the few times Rooney broke free in a good position, Welbeck failed to see it or was too late - put Rooney behind RVP, or Kagawa behind Rooney.

Other bits and bobs; De Gea decided he'd be Hart for a day, and the number of players in the box when attacking is a bad joke.

At least Manchester City's clean sheet went, and Rooney didn't get sent off; available for a few teams next week. ;)

Cheers,
OW

Paulinho bailed out the Spurs today. Tottenham dominated the game but couldn't find the net until extra time. Those were a very important three points today. Last years Spurs leave those points on the table. Eriksen is phenomenal.

That's a real shame from the point of view of every other club needing to keep an eye on the relegation places.

It was an odd decision by Sunderland's suits to bring him in in the first place. Perhaps not such an odd decision to pull the ripcord now I suppose. But the club is in tough shape...and I hope this doesn't mess with Jozy Altidore's confidence too much.

Di Canio essentially bought an entirely new team. With a new manager in place the only people left to blame if they get relegated are the board, the chairman and the owners...

Hernandez looked lost when he faced USA v Mexico, but to be fair he was operating under a clueless manager about to be fired. Given that the current lineup is struggling, why not give those three you mentioned a chance?

After the Everton crest fiasco over the summer, they promised they would fix it for next season.

Well, now they have published 3 candidates for their new crest and are asking for fans to vote. What do you think?

Definitely 'A' for me. It keeps Everton's traditional shield shape, B however has a lot of empty space in it and the motto almost seems an afterthought. The name makes it feel a little top heavy too. C meanwhile is completely off target - I don't know what's going on with the bottom of the shield.

Nice to see a club actually consulting its supporters over something, in any case.
