And that's why he fits in at Man City. They can afford for him to be inconsistent, they have the depth. He's a luxury player.

Indeed. And City have the perfect cover for that type of player in Milner. May not be as technically gifted but he will put in a shift for you whenever you call on him.

Nasri looked very good today. Is it just me, or is he the type of player that sparkles when things are going well, but fades when things are not?

Robbie Rogers made similar comments about his experiences. I think that homophobia from fans is not the biggest problem; the biggest problem is homophobia within the sport - manifested by other players and managers. Male athletes all over the world are stereotypically macho and homophobic.

This is very much echoed by John Blankenstein a gay referee in the Netherlands who came out in the mid 1980's.
He always said it was those inside the sport that had the most trouble accepting him for who he was.:(

As to the 2022 WC in Qatar it's not whether they are going to play the matches in the winter, but when they are going to finally come clean with the decision.

I mean is it realistic to expect football to be played by an average temp of 45C and can peck in stadiums to over the 50C.:p

Good idea, Zaha might even get a place on the bench ;)

Edit: Just looked at the PL table on the BBC's website. Doesn't look good for Hull, but OllyW will be delighted!

That's what I thought; it may be the 'richer' clubs have more players at the tournament, but they should be able to make a go of it.

Is that with Roger Johnson?

Looks like Hull City are looking to sign Everton's Jelavic, Jaffa. Hope your boys can put a damper on Chelsea's weekend.
£14m bid yesterday between him and Long, word is. However, at the back of the mind is the trouble spending beyond our means got us into last time we were in the Premier League.

Hopefully we're not being irresponsible with money again. Also, the cynic in me notes that today's match sees the start of a big push to let the FA know supporter opinion on 'Hull Tigers'. Are these big bids timed to try and take some of the oomph out of that? It certainly wouldn't be the first signing/news the club have put out that appears carefully timed to divide opposition.

In related news, Ehab Allam met with the FA yesterday to outline the rebrand plans. Interesting that Allam Snr didn't attend, perhaps the feeling was that he might have got a bit shouty if the blazers dared question him. :p

THE MASSIVE WEDNESDAYwinnning 5 nil...

A win for us is like me having sex, it doesn't happen very often, but when it does, I really pour it on!

Congrats Pachyderm! What a day out for the Massive Wednesday. :)

Chelsea's performances are the definition of "grinding out" wins. I'd rather see Man City win the title if Arsenal don't. At least City show some flair. Mourinho's boys are relentless but cynical and dull, dull, dull.

Re: Hulls potential new signings....bread and circuses, Divide and conquer. distract the fans, get them divided and slowly strangle their opposition. Or simply temporize until the resistance melts away. The Glazers weathered the storm a few years back by simply ignoring and outlasting the protests.

Still no word from the FA on the rebranding by Allam as they consider the proposal. My gut feeling is they will rubber stamp it after some feigned resistance. They are just too cowardly and incompetent to do otherwise.

The gay thing and the qatar thing in connection brings me to another thought. While I can understand, that some might fear to come out as active players in their own team, I wonder what consequences they fear speaking up about political/moral questions. I mean, why do they not have an own opinion and why are they considered to not be allowed to say that?

It is always said, that artists (music, literature, theatre) have a moral role in society, why do football players do not? Who would suspend them for saying political things? If FC Bayern would suspend e.g. Phillip Lahm for being moral, I bet other clubs would buy him gladly. So the fear of loosing their job can't be the reason.
I mean they are allowed to show a poster against racism before an international match starts.

Or Imagine the whole German team saying they not gonna play in Quatar, what impact that would have. (Well, maybe they would just say, ok then their starting place is free for another team).

PS: why are there women in the "against racism" commercial by the UEFA? Aren't women football players considered as playing like "fag***s" or seen as paralympics participants by the "macho-homophobic" football elite?

Control. Football players are employees. Owners do not want their employees to create publicity without their owners' consent and connivance. Artists that work under such a system would be considered propagandists. But footballers have no choice - a player must play for a team, someone inevitably owns that team and that owner generally keeps players on a tight leash in terms of what they say and do.

What the sport is lacking are owners who are openly and actively politicized when it comes to opposing racism and homophobia. Why? probably because it scares sponsors away. Why is that? In my opinion - most sponsors are unwilling to be seen to support a position that might cut into their profit margins. It comes down to greed in the end. That, and the fact that no small numbers of owners are racists and homophobes themselves.

I'm not sure what to make of things, to be honest. I have little faith in the FA to do anything properly but on the other hand there's a lot of discontent about what owners are doing to clubs up and down the land, and this presents the FA with the opportunity to draw a line in the sand. Word is that the footballing authorities are less than impressed with the proposal and how the Allams have gone about implementing it.

The City Till We Die folk have had meetings with the FA and Premier League and are due to present their final case to the FA Council at some point over the next month or two, so I hope the blazers are going to listen to supporter groups on this matter.

EDIT: Just seen this pic. Sob.

Peterborough United's Moyes End Terrace is demolished. The site of some splendid away days, that. :(

Indeed. If the FA wants to maintain any semblance of self-respect, they truly need to take a meaningful stand against arbitrary, irresponsible and short-sighted ownership. Not all owners are bad, but the bad ones need to be called to account and the FA is the organization that should be doing it.

Here's hoping that City Till We Die gets that point across and the FA take it to heart.

Let's hope so. The crazier things get at the various clubs, the stronger I think our position becomes. There's also the fact that the FA has been making a huge deal this season out of their organisation's 150th anniversary, and the 125th anniversary of the Football League. There's been a lot of noise coming from them about the importance of history and tradition in the English game - well, here's a fantastic opportunity for them to demonstrate how strongly they feel about it, in the hometown of the man they call their founding father.

Good game. But Liverpool rode their luck at times with some questionable defending.

In the end, SAS saved the day.

Crazy game, poor defending from Liverpool bailed out by the strikers and a bit of luck. Stoke have been a bit of a bogey team in the last few years though, so I'll take the win.

Sterling dived for the penalty, though if you look at the play from the ref's angle I can see why the penalty was given. Wilson threw a bit of a hip in on Sterling but Raheem went down way too easily because he knew he was being closed down. Not something I want to see.

Sturridge looked good, that is very encouraging.

Cissokho had a tough day, and Toure remains nothing more than a stop-gap as far as I'm concerned. Sakho was supposed to be back for this game but still has a gammy leg apparently. I doubt we'll buy anyone in January but with Agger out for a month and Sakho still not fit today (not to mention Flanagan and Jose Enrique) Liverpool have real shortage of defenders.

Defending remains Liverpool's biggest weakness. Coutinho was quiet today, he's more talented than Henderson but perhaps less consistent; he fades in and out of games.
