The funny thing about Rooney is, he was never a pure goal scorer. He had to add a lot of his skills inside the box as his career went on (think back to 2009-2010 when he out of the blue started scoring a lot of headed goals), and he still spends a lot of time outside the box collecting the ball and tracking back. To me that makes it more remarkable that he broke the England record.

Now let's see if he can carry on his scoring form tomorrow against Liverpool.

David De Gea: biggest signing of the summer?

De Gea's contract means Real will have to pay £30 million (or, 1/2 of an Anthony Martial) for him next season rather than getting him on a free, and Man Utd have 9 months or so to find a replacement.

It's a real shame - losing De Gea would have cost Man Utd 8-10 points guaranteed.

Man Utd had the advantage over Liverpool this weekend anyway, but with De Gea this is now a guaranteed win for Man Utd; anything less would completely shock me. Liverpool will be toothless without Coutinho, and the defense simply sucks.

I can't see Man Utd finishing higher than fourth this season, but (luckily for them) everyone else competing for that spot is crap. Liverpool, Spurs and Everton really have to worry about the growing Premier League "middle class" clubs like West Ham and Swansea who could end up giving them real run for their (TV) money.

Chelsea really haven't turned up this season. Mother of all hangovers from last season. Caneiro ghost haunting them.

3rd season-itis

A few things. The team is largely the same, only few new players for the starting lineup like Pedro. Other than that there's Falcao, who is some stupid project and Begovic while being good, is just a reserve keeper. Then on top of that, Mourinho being a stubborn ****. He keeps starting players who are underperforming every week, instead of the few players that were actually brought in with hope of them doing better, like Baba. He of course also doesn't want to use youth players.

Overall a subpar game by FC Bayern München. Second half was decent. They defeated Augsburg 2:1, made possible by a penalty that wasn't one in the 90th minute. Can't really feel happy that my favorite team won. This victory is on the referee.

wow, i can tell with some comments on this page of this thread that there are some people who most likely started watching football 3 weeks ago...smh

Another day, another disastrous performance from Liverpool.

Martial obviously worth the £80 million, LVG and Woodward a genius. Even before the game some in the media were trying to re-cast the De Gea debacle as some kind of clever move on Utd's part. History written by the winners?

Just say what's on your mind. If your referring to criticism of Chelsea, then they deserve it. I'm not sure if you know that they won the league last year and now are 11 points for the top through 5 games.

Philadelphia 1-2 Columbus

Columbus bounce back from a lame 3-0 loss to Dallas last week with a 2-1 win over the generally hapless Union. Kamara scored his 19th and 20th goals tonight, keeping him in the lead for the league Golden Boot.

Chelsea - Begovic has actually done very well, he can't be blamed for recent results. Given Chelsea's resources, the talent in their squad and the reputation of their manager, there can be no excuses. The only thing I can say is, the Mourinho magic gets results, but usually goes sour by the third season. Chelsea, it seems, are no longer an exception to this.

History written by the winners? No, by the media, who, well done to them, are paid to spend their lives spouting BS.

If Martial ends up costing the full amount, the Club will be doing well - hope they pay the lot. He isn't 'Henry', but was Henry at Martial's age? Like most young players he will be up and down. Nobody knows the level he will attain, but the way he took his goal is encouraging. The only certainty is the reporting; journos overreacting to the ups and the downs.

Rodgers to go if Liverpool fail to win at least 4 points in the next 2 league games and don't improve their play; home to Norwich City and Aston Villa? The last straw? Anyone lined up?

Cheers,
OW

Rodgers had better win those two, or else. The October fixtures look brutal: Everton, Spurs, Rubin Kazan, Southampton & Chelsea.

Yes, if United have to pay for all the add-ons in the Martial deal, it's because he's become a superstar overnight. That would not be a bad problem to have.

Even if Martial cost £100m it would be considered worth it as long as he helps keep Man Utd in the top four. "Value" is meaningless to all but Wenger these days, and he (bless him) is a relic of a bygone age. Top clubs don't really care if the next prospect costs a million billion pounds - the next TV deal will cover the cost anyway. The market is spiraling.

Pretty soon European clubs' ambitions will not be league or European silverware. It will be to sell a top prospect to an English club.

Liverpool are adrift. Apart from the excitement of the second place finish with Suarez, the club have been in one long, slow decline over the last ten years. Once you drop out of that money vortex in the top four, it is very, very hard to get back.

Another hapless night for English teams in Europe.

City, especially Pellegrini can NOT afford to mess up in Europe this season. Considering the investments that have been made.

English teams have forgotten how to defend, and its quite obvious we're lacking decisive midfielders in general.

Pogba turned the match on its head with one killer pass.

On this evidence, PSV are a lot better than Liverpool.

Man City are so bad in Europe. It's quite amazing. To be fair, Juventus made it to the final last season. PSV, on the other hand, have no chance of winning the CL.
