Sorry to say that I did post that folks should wait a bit on the 5K unit. It's WAY WAY WAY early and you're also paying through the nose for a fairly underfeatured display, not to mention that it's pretty awful looking by any measure.

I bought the 4K Dell units and they're superb and no issues. 900 dollars for the pair and someone will adopt them when I buy the right 5K display.

Which Dell Unit ? I am interested in checking it out.
i got the LG 4K ultrafine from Apple. I like it a lot, but im really not an expert on displays. do you have any feedback on the LG 4K?

thanks.

For all of you who are happy with your new MacBook Pros - good for you! That's just the way it should be, and what I have experienced a lot of times, both with Apple products and their support.

For all of you with problems - I feel for you and this time I am one of you. This is one of many threads were a number of forum members have had to have their computer returned, a process that can be quick and painless or extremely frustrating. It is my impression that there is an unusually high number of replacements for these models, but I may be wrong. For that reason, I started this survey. If you had to replace your late 2016 MTB TB, please make a tick!

With the sheer amount of crashing on sleep/wake with my 13" Touch Bar and LG 4k UltraFine display, I have asked the powers that be at Apple for a refund. I am just outside of the 14 days on both products, and have had nothing but problems from the beginning. At this point I'll go back the the 15" 2015 rMBP. . . That machine was solid, if not a pound / pound and a half heavier in my bag.

The experiences are so different.
There are no problems with my 15" 2,9GHz i7, 16GB, 2TB machine.
I returned the 5k LG Display not because of problems but because RF-shielding problems are known and I didn't want to go through a repair - odyssey.

I received a call back from Apple Executive Relations today, and the gentleman I spoke with asked me if I would speak to an engineer from Apple regarding this. They are supposed to call me @ 5:30 PST. I'll post the results of the call.

So here is where we are right now:

At 5:00 PST (earlier than expected) One of the AppleCare Senior Specialists called me and we discussed the issues with the MacBook Pro and the sleep / wake issue. He then sent me a disk image with software called "Capture Data" which does exactly what it says. It reads all kinds of information regarding your system and imparts it into a bunch of .dmg files.

As I had mentioned before in an earlier post, I was running 10.12.4 beta 2 and the issue still occurred, but since it was beta software, I didn't want Apple to be able to attribute my problems to that. So prior to his call, I wiped the machine and re-installed via recovery (10.12.2), then updated to 10.12.3. I ran the capture data program on the fresh install. We spoke for a while longer while this was happening, and I was then instructed to use the machine as normal. I installed Creative Cloud, and then left to get dinner. As soon as I returned home and attempted to wake the system, it wouldn't respond. Again, this was with a brand new install of 10.12.3. I then took pictures of the situation, force rebooted the machine, and then re-ran the capture data program (when you submit the files, you login to a special page with your AppleID and send the data (which was approximately 204mb)).

I have zipped both folders, and included my pictures, left detailed descriptions, AND spoken with the Apple again. He has received my data, and will send it on to the engineering team, who he tells me usually gets back to him within 24 hours. Being as it was later this evening when everything was submitted (8:00 PST), I expect to hear back Monday, but tomorrow is not out of the question.

So, as it stands now, the engineers will have viable data in regards to what is causing this issue. I'm grateful that my MacBook Pro failed on the first sleep of the new install.

I'll keep you all posted on what happens from here, but at least this is a step in the right direction!

Since I both the LG 5K all my problems started, when resuming from Sleep the MBP will Crash or Panic, here are the threads with the details, it is REALLY BAD:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/31267982#31267982

https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ting-disconnecting-the-lg-5k-monitor.2027944/

I agree, the 5K monitor is not the problem, the drivers handling the AMD GPU is the real problem. Apple support extracted all sort of data from my MBP to be sent to the engineers for analysis, still waiting for a response.

I the mean time I have disabled power nap and things are better with sleep and 5K
[doublepost=1484876889][/doublepost]
I am in the exact same boat, disabled Power Nap and things are better now.

Shoddy initial drivers seems to be an Apple problem. I remember I had similar issues with my Thunderbolt 2 to Ethernet Adapter on my Macbook Pro 2012 15 inch. The entire machine sometimes would freeze if I pushed the adapter in in the wrong TB2 port. This silently was fixed by Apple a sometime in 2013 by a software update. Those TB3 issues sound very familiar, been there, done that. However also the entire USB-C situation is absymal atm, there are so many shoddy adapters and cables out there it is unbelievable. If the USB-C consortium does not do more rigorous testing then it will damage the reputation of the good idea upfront.

I can recommend to read the blogs from Benson Leung from Google and Nathan K. who specialize themselves in USB-C device testing. And literally 80% of the cables out there have absymal quality.

The funny thing is, that even Apple had problems in this area (aka spec wrongly implemented), they silently pushed out new 5A USB-C cables which are among the best now, but you only can see if you have the old ones or the new ones by the packaging. I am not sure but I think there even is a replacement program from apple if you have the old cables.

Anyway here are the links:

They also maintain a really good spreadsheet with a device summary.

Can't agree more !!!

Got in since 2 months... keyboard is crap, touch ID hangs 50% of the time, recurrent crashes, and definitely 0% perf increase compared to my late 2014 high-end MBP...
Totally disappointed.

Who wouldn't be disappointed by a defective unit?

Well, it's update time. . .

I received a call back from my Apple contact today, and 2 things 1) The engineering team is still troubleshooting, and 2) they say that they are having some issues going through the capture data because of something that Creative Cloud is has going on.

So, they have asked me to format my machine yet again. This will be the 6th or 7th time that they have asked me to restore the machine. Apple originally asked me to change the size of the partition of my SSD, so we booted to Internet Recovery Mode, and went into the partition stuff there. . . No dice. When I clicked on the + sign, nothing happens. I don't get the little radio button to grab and resize. So that's off the table for some reason.

Anyway, with Apple asking me to wipe my machine again, we've hit a wall. I simply cannot backup my machine wipe it clean and then wait for it to crash. When I first started troubleshooting all of this with the senior advisor, I wiped the machine that day, and made a fresh capture. Then I was told to use the machine as normal. I asked if I should go ahead and install Creative Cloud, etc, and I was told yes.

I use this machine every day for work, and simply cannot stop what I am doing and format every time they change course, nor do I feel I should have to. I feel that if Apple wants to capture fresh data from my machine (because they seem to think it's an issue with the machine itself now), then it's time for them to replace it, and the engineers can have it.

I spoke with the gentleman from the executive liaison office a day before hearing back from the senior advisor and voiced my request for a replacement machine. He told me "the options that we have right now are to troubleshoot the machine." I then asked him what the other option was and was told "there are none." I then stated to him "If you are saying there are "options", that implies choice, and you aren't giving me one." It's troubleshoot or deal with a machine that doesn't work." After that, I got nothing but silence. He didn't have anything to say.

I don't think I'm out of line wanting my nearly $3000.00 worth of gear here to work. If they can't make it work, that's on Apple, not me, right? I have sent another email to Tim Cook expressing what I want to happen. At this point I want to return the 4k UltraFine and the 13" MacBook Pro, and get the base 15" instead. At least then I won't be tied to an external display, and I'll be able to run Illustrator and Photoshop without having to squint all day. I explained to Apple that the reason for buying the 13" was such that I could have a portable system when I needed it, and I could plug in an external display when at home. Two external displays later, I don't have a working setup. I've had the 13" for I don't know, 30 days maybe? Is what I'm asking for really off the cliff here?

I'd love to know your thoughts. Flame all you want if you'd like. But just remember that Phil Schiller got up on that stage and told all of us that this MacBook Pro was the best they have ever made, and that the 4k display was the best display for it. Unfortunately in my case, it has been the worst purchase in the 20 years I have been using Apple products.

I went to 3 stores selling apple yesterday to see if the display units of 15' tbmbp had same UI lag as mine, and all 3 had it.. so apple once again put a underpowered intel gpu that cant even handle their OS

IMO, if you have already had seven exchanges that resulted in a full OS reinstall each time, it's time for Apple to try something else, and may be worth insisting that they take the machine in to do their own testing (if this didnt happen already.) If you take or send the machine to them and if, once in their hands, they still cannot fix it, then I think it is reasonable to request they replace it (rather than you having to continually troubleshoot with something you use for work, and being forced to bear reliability problems that a Windows ME computer could accomplish for $50.)

I'm guessing you already have videos showing the functional problems, but, if you do not already, I highly recommend taking some as it documents how a problem undermines the usability of a system, and can be useful for warranty request/claims when the Maker sees how much trouble the issue is causing.

From what I've gathered from reading here, one area Apple needs to work on is their quality assurance. They increased the pricing substantially over what was already a premium price. Consumers will (and should) expect the performance to match that pricing - paying near perfection dollars should equate to near perfection performance. Inconsistent individual specimens that fail to meet that standard & do justice for a great overall design can easily undermine the long-term confidence that decade-plus Apple Users have developed for the brand. That's not a good long-term sales strategy, because that trust is hard to gain and easy to lose. It's certainly not good for the mental health of customers who wind up with defective units. I hope they fix this, as I feel you deserve better.

If it is an actual Adobe Creative Cloud issue, you can't really blame Apple can you? Sometimes there are some software that can lock up the operating system. At work, we have ESET anti-virus. You can get a $8,000 desktop. If you put Windows 7 on it, it WILL FREEZE with ESET unless you install a special hot fix on that computer. It is not Dell's fault.

Have you tried using your computer WITHOUT Adobe installed? Just for a diagnostic.

If I unplug the external display when my mbp is in clamshell mode and then open my lid on the mbp it gets like in this video:

You're absolutely right, I can't blame them. However, they want me to run the system with no software on it for the foreseeable future. How am I supposed to get work done? Answer: They don't give a damn. They don't think creative cloud is causing the issue. . .they think it's causing their capture data software to not show everything they want. And lets be honest for one second. . . does EVERYONE who is having this same problem run Creative Cloud?

At this point, I have given up. I returned the 4k this morning. Now the search begins for a new monitor that I can use without a bunch of random dongles. . . Thanks Apple!

Yup ! Though I get another glitch where it shows my current screen and the login screen back and forth every second, I can't actually use the MacBook when it gets like this.

Its made worse with this combination of factors :

- I will leave my new MacBook in clamshell mode (closed) plugged into the monitor over night. Not an unlikely scenario by any stretch of the imagination
- The next morning, or after say 5 hours, I will hit my Apple Bluetooth External Keyboard (the new one) to wake it up. The monitor won't wake up. OR it will wake up but the part where you type in the password will not show. I will then open the MacBook from clamshell mode. It also won't have any place to type in the password.
- So now I can not use the Macbook at all at this point. I disconnect the MacBook from the external monitor as my only recourse.
- Either it works - type in password, reconnect the monitor, start using it. Or it starts displaying graphic issues like the video you attached, make it unusable. Then I have to force shut it down or restart it.

This is with 10.12.3. It is a *slight* improvement over 10.12.2, where the MacBook would simply be in a hard crash state. Nothing would wake it up and I've had to force shut it down - a fantastic feeling for a brand new product.

So given the combination of issues, I have to always remember to disconnect the MacBook if I think I'll be away from it for a few hours, and at the same then hope the graphic glitch doesn't mess it up anyways. Or don't use the external monitor at all, which sucks.

I understand, I have brought this up to apple as a bug fix with my video let's hope they fix it.
It sounds like software issue, that's the good thing.

Yup. Pretty crappy experience though.

Yes, I could not agree more. The MBP is stunning but the experience, but the issues are not something that I can oversee.
Thank god that I have AppleCare on this one, I'm studding now and I can't afford down time so if this is a hardware issue I just need to wait to repair it until later on this summer sadly.
But I have reported this issue to AppleCare also so they have it on record.

Sadly I did purchase it from 3rd party seller and Apple can't replace it because of that they telling me.
So next MBP I'll order from Apple instead.
