you are not stating the "obvious" thats your opinion...brazil used to be good like i said earlier

Clearly I am not arguing that fact, nor was I ever. I know very well Brazil and Argentina use to be the best teams in world. At this very moment though, you can’t definitely say that. I don’t think most people would even try to argue that.

Well, that France / Denmark match sure wasn't worth watching.

Nice to see Peru come away with 3 points against Australia, they played well enough to have gotten through an easier group.

The Group D matches should be much more interesting.

No, I took a decision/gamble not to watch - or even follow it, (Denmark/France) and that decision yielded handsome dividends.

As Simon Kuper, (who has written on football for the Financial Times) observed dryly on Twitter, "there is such a thing as added stoppage time, but in some matches you want subtracted time....."

Peru did well and agree, a pity they didn't have an easier group.

Some people on twitter are asking FIFA to fine for boring matches :)

There is boring and there is boring. There are contested draws (last night's two superb contests where Portugal and Spain had to fight hard to obtain a draw with Iran and Morocco) and tedious and predictable ones (such as this afternoon's.)

For both Denmark and France, a boring match, with the outcome a draw, suited both; neither had any really incentive to try to win, as a draw would have seen both qualify for the next phase (as it did) and a vigorous match could have led to injuries, or suspensions, or other unwanted costs.

Having said that, such matches do little for the game apart from offering a short term benefit to the teams in question.

Argentina make in through, but some real poor sportsmanship. Extreme time wasting and kicking extra balls from the Argentina bench. Would have like to see better winners.

Goodbye Iceland, I was behind you all the way.

Argentina and France meet in the round of 16. neither team has been convincing, but France look more likely to get through.

Why the heck didn't Mascherano get treatment for that huge cut on his face?

Mascherano channeling his inner Terry Butcher, or at least trying to.

I was rooting for Nigeria, but the guy who plays for my club team scored an iconic winner for his country. Ah well.

Gutted to see Iceland go. And not just because I picked them for the Sweepstake! They are a smaller country who don't need to play dirty to try and win imo.
Pretty sure Argentina will be lucky to get through the next game too.

After what Maradona did i hope France beat Arg. Very disgusting behaviour and lack of sportsmanship. So poor too, if Nigeria converted they'd have won. Also a pen for me, Rojo misjudged it.

Agreed:

For sheer footballing passion, positive values, supporting the underdog, cheerfulness, fun, fair play on the pitch, and the sheer chutzpah of the fact that they actually qualified, (not to mention their record in the European Championships two years ago), I'd have loved to have seen Iceland progress to the knock-out stages and am truly sorry that this didn't happen.

They got the Group of Death.

Overwhelming happiness here. I was watching it with a group of friends and I think we - and the entire building - must have passed the threshold of a sound level meter or two. It's been a while since I screamed a goal so much. Really thrilled. We played a good match this time.
