Good grief: They - yes, "they" - the commentariat - thought this would turn out to be a thrashing, (when Belgium woke up and shifted gears) but yes, it is danger of becoming a thrashing, but the other way around.

Japan lead, by two goals to nil.

What a mess for Belgium. The defending is trash. That back 3 aren’t doing well at all.

Japan so disciplined, Belgium too slow and sloppy.

Still plenty of time left, but Japan fully deserves this so far.

Aaaaaaand we're back level through the much-maligned Fellaini!

Yes, the often (justly) maligned Fellaini has risen to the challenge; now, this is a serious match.

Two-all, with less than ten minutes of normal time left.

A session of extra-time beckons that might actually turn out to be a real contest.

It’s rare seeing a far eastern team making waves at a World Cup so I’m rooting for them lol. Belgium are our neighbours but I’d sooner see Japan go through. I just won’t admit that next time I’m in Belgium lol.

Haha I feel you! I just am enjoying the game. Belgium is my pick

The presence of mind for Courtois to take that quick throw, and for Lukaku to make the dummy at the crucial moment, opening up the goal for Chadli. What a finish!

Hats off to Japan, they played an incredible match.

For the first time in the entire competition, Belgium were comprehensively challenged and had to raise their game. And they rose to the challenge.

I never thought they wold pull back three in normal time - I thought it would go to Extra Time - and (for the first time this competition) that the ET part of the match would be a serious contest.

According to the Guardian, the last time a team came from two goals down (to win) were what was then West Germany in 1970. (And they needed Extra Time to do this.)

But great game from Japan; they were brilliant.

Japan played like England of decades past - no bunkering, no cheating, no time-wasting...and it might have cost them the match.

Belgium are totally likable apart from Fellaini so congrats to them. They must be thinking this world cup could be there for the taking.

Of course, Brazil must be thinking the same at this point.

That's going to be a great quarterfinal. Glad we won't see the winner until the final ;)
