Do you guys get video assistance next season btw? Got introduced this time in Germany (and with a horrendous implementation too, especially considering they had the complete last season as an internal test run..). But still way better than none imho.

Still baffled as to how one can muck up such thing so good that there are already people saying it should be undone..
They are doing some testing this year in the cup. No decision has been made.

But it's not overly clear. Does the ref ask for assistance, or does the fourth official notify the ref he's made a mistake?

Theoretically the VA speaks up, unasked, when he noticed a blatantly false decision made by the ref on the pitch.

In reality (here at least) he speaks up whenever he feels like it. Which means we already have some teams that objectively got way more calls against them - often plain 50/50 decision which in no way are blatantly false. Then you have the usual double standards etc pp. Not only kills it incredibly the flow of the game but worse introduced another level of pure subjectivity.

Got a lot of criticism in the beginning for being intransparent- what did they do? - silently changing the definition of how the VA should work (without even notifying the ref on top of the lot  ).

Killed a lot of hope I had since the game itself got somewhat infested with more than questionable refs based on a broken system.
[doublepost=1515233711][/doublepost]And on top of that he doesn't even check per se a second yellow card for a player (yellow/red) for example - even if that card was handed out because of a blatantly false decision!! Because then he would have to check every yellow card given...yea right..

Pure incompetence and you wonder how such a bad implementation could have happened without being on purpose..

So Coutinho is sold to Barca. It is depressing to lose a player of irreplaceable quality in the middle
If a season, however massive the fee.

Liverpool poach van Dijk, Barca poach Coutinho. Dog eat dog.

Very soft pen though. Football is NOT a non contact sport. If it is to become one, then I think I'll be looking elsewhere for entertainment. It's getting ridicules. I think some of these players spend longer in training learning how to win a free kick or penalty than they do playing the game.

Yes, a very soft penalty - though no softer than the one Everton ‘earned’ against new Liverpool their last meeting. So I suppose there is at least some consistency there.

Probably the worst kept secret in transfer history.
£145 million. Not bad money if the agent gets 5-10%.
But I think you'll miss him. But as I've said before, the player has all the power these days.

Fans think they'll be alright because of Salah but i think its a huge blow. Considering Coutinho was the one who often got Liverpool out of tricky situations. The others have movement and can finish but Coutinho has vision and is a set-piece specialist. It aching to a loss of Suarez all over again.

But Coutinho had made it clear that he did not wish to play for Liverpool again; in that case, especially as Liverpool had faced down Barcelona last summer, it made sense to sell him for the best price that could be achieved.

I rather suspect that Arsenal will face a similar situation - sooner rather than later - with our gifted, if somewhat temperamental (and egotistical) Chilean.

I think if Arsenal can retain Ozil they should be relatively happy. Quality playmakers are hard to find, decent forwards less so. Plus you already have Lacazette who just needs more people to find his runs. That said Mahrez or Draxler is worth a look for Wenger

I don't have any such worries at West Ham! Nobody is tapping up our players!

Coutinho was Liverpool's best player, period. With the money in hand, given Liverpool's reasonably smart recruitment track record lately, the club ought to be able to manage. But there is no way to see this as anything other than a setback, at least in the short term.

Keita is set to join in the summer, and with the fee in hand Liverpool can theoretically afford just about any player out there, but I'd rather just have Coutinho.

I never got over seeing Xabi Alonso leaving; he was world class for years after leaving Liverpool and we've arguably never replaced him - Coutinho could perhaps have been that player, but we couldn't keep him.

So Stoke and Mark Hughes have parted company. Hardly surprising. Out of the FA cup, struggling in the league.
But will anyone come in and improve their situation?
Time will tell I guess.

No shock there, but Big Sam and Tony Pulis have already taken their customary firefighting jobs for the season, so Stoke will have to look beyond the obvious choices for their next manager.

Hart starts in goal for us against Shrewsbury :(

If he can't keep a clean sheet today, then his already fragile confidence is going to be shattered.

Come on you Irons!

First half reads like my school reports. Could do better!

Pretty poor from West Ham. Hopefully we can turn it around. Really don't need a draw and another game. Think I'd prefer to lose.
[doublepost=1515340814][/doublepost]Quite a dire game to be honest. Especially from a West Ham perspective.
I'm sure we will do better in the reply. Apparently we had 4 touches in their box.
Shocking.

i felt like that was a loss for you guys...

and the 15 minutes or so i saw they were kicking your butt...

They were. We did better in the second half, but it was a pretty poor performance. A couple of decent stops from Hart was about the only good thing.
Meanwhile Callum lost a tooth in an innocent enough challenge. Not a pretty sight!

Occasional US international Eric Lichaj is tearing it up against Arsenal - Nottingham Forest are 3-1 up on the Gunners and Lichaj bagged two, the second a wonderful chest and volley from 18 yards out.

Interesting to read the comment pieces on Coutinho's departure. While I still feel like Coutinho is irreplaceable, it is also fair to say that this does not mean that Liverpool can't improve going forward. There is still plenty of attacking talent in the squad, and Lallana, while not the creator Coutinho was, is a more versatile player and better in defense.

The acquisition of a quality goalkeeper would probably go far to assuage my concerns.

Well, at least your wish came true. Could have been worse. Love how Hart had a hat thrown to him from the crowd to keep the sun out of his eyes.

...

That second goal of his was beautiful.

No idea there was an American in the Championship.

People always get upset when managers rotate the squad, but the fact of the matter is it must be done. It's a risk, and today it didn't pay off for Wenger.

To be fair, Nottingham Forest played pretty well today, and had a little luck to boot.

I think we had all our luck today in not conceding! Be interesting to see who Moyes picks for the replay. It was a third game in 6 days, and I think it showed.

I am truly enjoying the rather hysterical Conte/Mourinho spat at the moment - it's not doing either manager any favors but the entertainment value is off the charts. Another low blow from Mou.

I know that a lot of people criticize Klopp for his sideline antics and quotable quotes, as well as his "flawed" tactical approach, but I get the impression that he's a genuinely decent guy (and not a David Brent like Brendan Rogers)

Mourinho, on the other hand, seems actually mean or coldly vengeful (i.e. the eye-poke). Conte, Like Klopp, can go nuts on the sideline, but his outbursts are less pantomime and more "crime of passion".

That "coldly vengeful" and genuinely mean spiritedness - plus a breathtaking lack of grace or generosity - are the things I dislike most about Mr Mourinho.

Agreed that both Conte and Klopp are more decent, more generous and more authentically passionate than is Mourinho; and that is because it is all about him. These days, I have difficulty remembering who is captain of United - something that never happened in Fergie's day, and nobody doubted Fergie's control or authority.

But, yes: Am enjoying the spat between Conte and Mourinho - Conte's genuine contempt must get under Mourinho's solar, because, like any half competent mafia Don, he measures himself on terms of the 'respect' he gets from his peers.
