The 2017 iPhone Could Cost Upwards of $1,000

It would be suicidal for Apple to cross $1,000 price point especially if just a spec jump and AMOLED screen. My guess max price $999. Still way too expensive for most people.

Suicide? The 256GB iPhone 7+ model already costs here 1139e (~$1200). Before iPhone 7 I thought they couldn't go over the 999e limit. They did, easily. I'm not surprised if the new one is even more expensive. Just means I won't buy it any more than I did the 7. That is, unless they make it worth it somehow. Considering the 7 I'm not holding my breath waiting for it. Promises of a "far bigger" battery sounds good, though.

On the other side of the coin, Apple reminds me of Nintendo in the way it has tons of money in the bank. If one product doesn't make them as much money, they can still fall back on their cash reserves. They may be happier with fewer people buying their stuff and it resulting in less profits or slightly more profits then before if it means keeping the "perceived value" and "status" of the iPhones high. If they discount it $200, then it sets a precedence that all iPhone after that should follow suit.

You know they will because few people pay that price upfront. Most people pay the price over 24 months bundled in with their phone plan.
Just looking at Australian pricing people are forced to pay 100+ each month. I suspect no they won't pay this over 24 months. It's similar to the UK.

Since some iPhone models can approach the $ 1,000 ($ 969 for the iPhone 7 Plus 256 GB), I find that passing the 1,000$ mark is not that bizarre. The only solution for me is to not buy any more from Apple, therefore they will have to lower their prices and innovate ...

Problem is they will continue to cost a lot even the S8 will be Round that 1k mark

Which is why more and more of the world are bypassing both Apple and Samsung, for nearly equivalent phones at a third the cost.
Define nearly equivalent.

That's like saying an Elantra is nearly equivalent to a s class because both move people and have radios.

If your needs are email and Facebook sure all phones can do that these days.

Bypassing in what sense? From what I hear, only Samsung and Apple seem to be making any money from smartphones.

About two years ago I purchased a brand new Nexus 6 with 32GB from Amazon for $199. I love that phone, and I have no angst towards Samsung or Apple as I own both Apple and Samsung gear but i'll be damned if i'll drop $400+ on anybody's smartphone. My Nexus 6 will serve me until the battery dies.

Spoke to a family friend this evening who manages a retail store and she said they are already prepping the sales teams for the sticker shock coming this fall and how to sell it still. As a family who has four phones a three of which are I phones I feel if this is real then they will price themselves out of the market. I'm all for Apple being a bit of a premium but not double the premium. We were told the entry level flagship will likely start at $999 usd. That's sad. If this is true we will be replacing our I phones with androids when the current I phones we have die or need replacong.

ASFs of the iPhone has been steadily rising year after year. I have no idea why anyone would be shocked to see the iphone eventually break the $1k barrier, or surprised that there will still be plenty of people willing to buy them.

I think perhaps you've been confused by that silly >100% profit calculation stuff.

There are plenty of smartphone manufacturers making money. That's why there are so many, especially in places like China.

Do they make monstrous profit margins? No, but they make millions nonetheless.

As Apple fans are fond of saying, "Even if it's lower market share, I'd love to be making that much" :)

ZTE Axon 7 - $399. Sure the software is not as polished but they are improving it and it has a better, bigger display, better audio, and you can buy nearly 3 of them for the price of one $1k iPhone.

Yeah and the Civic would still be a POS (sorry Honda fans they are not great cars). But it would get you from point A to B and you could still have your monster sports car with money in the bank. Not to mention none of the upkeep headaches of a Porsche. But if I'm paying $110k+ for a car I'm also shopping Ferarri and Lamborghini.

Sorry Apple, used to be a fan when your premium was not too much but with these new prices and lack of features I've gone elsewhere. Windows isn't as bad any more and the laptop I replaced my MBA with is much better than any of the MBA's....

Not many Canadians like the idea of spending around $1500 CAD for a phone. That sounds mind numbing for a smartphone. At least Rogers and other companies offer 2 year contracts. However, not everyone wants to be locked to Rogers on a 2 year contract either. I can't blame people for seeking a SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, or another Android device.

The iPhone cannot be considered a "Porsche" when it compromises too much to the point it doesn't feel luxurious. The 7/7+ is substandard compared to the SE/5S. There is no headphone jack, which is a major feature. The 7+ dimensions are pretty obscure because it adds a lot of bulk. Add in all that bezel too? Touch ID isn't even up to snuff because it isn't always on like many other flagships. No wireless charging or fast charging. Intel modems suck in GSM devices too. NFC isn't be utilized fully either. Memory upgrades come at a $100 extra premium too.

I rather spend $200-$300 on a smartphone that gets the job done than $1000 for one that doesn't offer enough to make up to a 5X difference in pricing (assuming if I paid $200). The only way I can go with the S8 or iPhone Edition is trading in a phone to get it free on a two year contract or two year installment plan with carrier bill credits.

True, the civics perform the same function as the Porsche but not with the same execution. And my friend who owns a turbo model says the car is very solid but regular maintenance is off the charts. Similarly a $100 android phone lets one check Facebook, respond to emails and do instant messaging same as an iPhone. But without the ecosystem convergence, class leading hardware and top tier support.

It's your decision and as I've said before, multiple iPhones, 2 iPads, 2 MacBook pros and Apple TV. To each their own.

I've been a Mac guy since 2002 so been through TONS of hardware starting with the iLamp, iPhone 3G, 4s, 6+, 2x Apple TV, Apple Watch, etc. I also own a bit of Apple stock. The Mac tax was real but manageable and Windows sucked.

I've also had a couple Android phones and they were OK but serviceable.

The Ecosystem convergence is BS - I hardly use Continuity on my Macs as my phone does phone thing and my Mac does Mac things. The only thing that is awesome is iMessage. My Apple Watch is cool as a fitness tracker but I think a Garmin or Fitbit would be just as good. Android Wear 2.0 looks promising. Other than that I don't do much - HomeKit sucks, Siri (and all talk to my phone) sucks, HealkthKit is quite limited, etc. The hardware/software quality is declining - see recent stats on both by people that track that sort of thing.

So I could continue to pay top dollar for mediocre Apple stuff or pay 1/2 price for mediocre other people's stuff. I think it's time to test the waters. As a stockholder it scares me as Timmy has no clue what people want or what to do next and is about as charismatic as a wet sock. Steve had the gift of vision and charisma (love him or hate him).

We use continuity and handoff. I have a Fitbit surge and it's great for what it does, different than Apple Watch but not better as a smart watch. HomeKit is fine and HealthKit will be a developing platform.

Finally I'm happy with where the price of my shares are headed. But I can't tell you how to spend your money.

HomeKit has many growing pains. I went the Insteon route and it works great and don't feel the need to spend the >$100 on a new hub for Homekit integration.

As am I - but I'm going to be watching like a hawk. If these rumors are true Apple may be in for a rude awakening.

Honestly no one I've met in person gives a crap what phone I have, and I don't care what phone they have. My 6s+ is humming along but if something better comes along sub-$1000 when mine dies I'll jump ship.

Well certainly there has been grousing on MR about this for years, even though there were record breaking quarters after record breaking quarters. Of course, one never knows and we will have to wait and see.

Hate to say it but this iPhone will still sell like hot cakes. But what this means is that you have to shell out 1.5K to get an iPhone we have all been waiting for since 2014. And I don't understand why I even need to pay that much . Wireless charging,OLED are standards on Android. Heck the OnePlus 3T sells at 430. I see no reason why I should play more to get these features on iOS . This phone doesn't have anything unique. I really wanted to get the iPhone with OLED but considering the "Edition" moniker I am guessing it's unaffordable for me so I will probably just switch to the Note 8/S8 and wait for OLED and wireless charging to become mainstream on iOS .
I am tired of Apple's elitist attitude on this anyway

The funny thing is that those who bought the "boring" 7 won out because it would just feel like being scammed if I bought a 7S after waiting for 3 years.
