Bayern Munich are having an off-season, but even so - beating them in their own house is a big deal, especially by a convincing 3-1 scoreline. A tougher match than spanking Schalke, I would argue...

One absolutely devastating piece of news though - Roberston picked up a yellow in this match, which means he's suspended for the next match. That is a massive loss.

Great victory for Liverpool.

I have long regretted that Arsenal did not attempt to purchase Virgil van Dijk - he is an outstanding player - though that was at the time when Mr Wenger disdained the very idea of purchasing a decent defender, or a defensive minded midfield general, preferring attacking players instead.

I wanted to see him at United, as well. He has really been as advertised.

On the flip side of the coin, anyone who questioned why Löw dropped Hummels from the German national squad got a clear answer why last night, as got beaten easily for two of Liverpool's goals.

Virgil has been one of those rare players who has lived up to the hype. He came in as the finished article but has reached a new level for both Liverpool and the Netherlands. He is a defender of the highest quality and in the modern style - technically excellent, capable with the ball at his feet, large but very fast, can make attacking forays up the pitch and ping the ball around freely, and is still good at all of the meat-and-potatoes stuff all center backs do - dominating in the air (offensively and defensively), being a physical presence, and providing leadership and organization.

The Germany squad is in a transition - lots of big names who are either out of form or aging out. Löw has a series of tough choices to make.

Tomorrow.

With English teams making up half of the pool for the draw, the chances are good that we will see at least one all-English tie.
Well if we don’t I fancy an English team in the finale!
How about Liverpool win the CL, Man U finish 4th in PL but don’t get a CL spot because Liverpool take it. Apparently this year we won’t get 5 spots if we win it.

Actually thinking about it the CL winners would have to finish 5th in the PL to steal the CL spot from the 4th club if I’m remembering correctly?

I believe that is how it works - in that case the 4th place club qualifies for the Europa League instead (and I think the FA gets an extra Europa league spot as a consequence).

In truth, I cannot see Liverpool finishing anywhere other than first or second in the PL.

Their CL place will be well secured for next season.

Congratulations Arsenal. For fun imagine this is the final PL

Man City
Liverpool
Spurs
Chelsea
Man U
Arsenal.

Assuming Arsenal win the Europa league and Man U win the Champions Leauge, would our 4 teams in the CL be
Man City
Liverpool
Man U
Arsenal

With Spurs and Chelsea missing out? I realise that’s a lot of assumptions, but am I right?

No.

I don't see Arsenal at sixth, (fourth, or fifth, or third - on a good day), but, equally, I don't see them managing to win the Europa League. Under any circumstances, unfortunately, Mr Emery's success in that competition notwithstanding.

I’m not suggesting that is the way it would go. Just wondering if that’s how the places would be divided up if that’s how the results went.

The Champions League draw is out.

So the conventional wisdom is Liverpool v Barcelona and Juve v Man City for the semifinals, though Man Utd could spring another one of their now-normal surprise wins.

It would be a huge surprise.
But let’s be honest, there are no easy games at this level.

Very true. Porto is arguably the "easiest" opponent left in the competition, but they have a huge amount of European experience. They may sit back and bunker, and frustrate Liverpool to no end, waiting for opportunities to counterattack or draw a penalty.

Nervy match at Craven cottage today. I had a bad feeling about this when I woke up, and when the rain started pelting down at 1-0, with Liverpool failing to ice the match, I thought "this is ripe for a howler."

And so it proved.

It wasn't a terrible performance by Liverpool, all things considered, but the defensive mix-up will take the headlines. Alisson take the lion's chare of the blame but really it was a series of errors that led to the goal - Milner shanks the ball backwards, Virgil's header puts the keeper under a bit of pressure and then Alisson makes the wrong decision and pop, bang, lovely for Babel.

I was hoping this would be a chance for Liverpool to boost their goal difference - but while Fulham did nothing in midfield and relatively little on the break, their back four actually defended pretty stoutly for much of the match - US international Tim Ream had a pretty good match, among others.

At the end of the day, it's three points and Milner could afford to joke about conceding the goal in the mix zone afterwards. Man City are still in the driver's seat and will probably win the title, but Liverpool are at least keeping them honest.

Wolves have had an incredible season. In the semis of the FA Cup and 7th in the league when many were writing them off earlier in the season.

In a way they are hugely underrated, but on the other hand there is nothing underrated about their 7th place position in the league - every club above them is a heavyweight and they have fully earned their spot.

Liverpool lead the table this evening (granted, with an extra match played), but that means that Manchester City (who have already been defeated on four occasions in the league this season, and therefore, are not invincible), must keep winning to be able to challenge for the Premiership trophy.
