Indeed. But we all miss key players. Antonio for us at the moment. If he had played the last few games we would have turned some of those draw's into wins.
But their main issue tonight wasn't defence but their inability to hit the target. Something we do too much of when Antonio is missing.
As did we, for a while...but then we got Vestergaard in form and then broke him, but we've made do.
One player shouldn't shape an entire team...Liverpool have the personnel to cope with missing players and should be better at it.
But - leaving Covid, and injuries to key players aside - notwithstanding that, - I think that it is exceptionally difficult to maintain, or sustain, a superlative and consistent level of excellence for more than two consecutive or so in the Premier League.
Manchester City managed it - superb in their first year, and were chased to the very wire in their second year at the top, a year when Liverpool - then in thir own first year of excellence - won the Champions League, but were pipped by one point for the Premier League by an outstanding Manchester City side.
Each of those two teams were outstanding for two years, but could not sustain this level of excellence for a third.
And, it is in the third year that injuries to key players seem to have a greater effect than otherwise might have been the case.
One player shouldn't shape an entire team, true, but some players simply transcend their teammates, for, there are key players, who, when they are out of action for a while, do have an effect on their team, becuae their absence leaves a yawning gap, that nobody else can adequately fill. And van Dijk fills such a role in Liverpool.
