Manchester United are held to a draw (1-1) at Southampton; or, rather, Southampton (who more than deserve their point), manage, or secure, or claw a draw against an inconsistent United.
This was about 9 goals better than I was dreading, so a draw feels like a moral victory.
And hear OGS having a bleat about refereeing is just music to my ears. It means he's upset, which means he didn't win, which means that ultimately, Man U have not been successful, which makes me very happy.
I have to say, Saints were very lucky not to have been pounded in this game and the rampant inconsistency of United is the winner on the day.
A point sends us up the table and very much gets us off the mark for the season.
I must say, watching Adam Armstrong run in on through balls and go at the goalkeeper, he looks like a young and somewhat healthier Danny Ings, so I think (and I hope I am right) we have pulled off another one of our shrewd transfers. Wonder who we'll sell him to next year?

Very nice to bring back memories of your father. I am guessing but could be wrong that Bunny Bread is a soft white loaf. What is the origin of the name? Yes, I could try Google but would rather get the info from an insider.

From what I recall when they opened the bakery, many moons ago, the Lewis(original owners) family members were sitting around trying to decide the name during a snow storm up in Indiana* and one of them saw a bunny go hopping across the yard in the snow and said, "...lets call it Bunny Bread!"

*Might have been Illinois, I was like 9 years old when I heard this story.

There is something terribly wrong at Manchester United.

There is no easier way to put it - OGS has to be the luckiest manager that I've ever witnessed in my more than 30 years following football. The excuse that he is "building something" doesn't add-up when he has been allowed to spend nearly half a billion pounds, has had his contract extended as a reward for mediocracy and has allowed several players to hold the club to ransom for higher wages.

The fact that he was a 'good' player back in his day and is a seemingly likeable fellow does not equate to managerial credentials. He is a coach in the same vein as Steve McClaren, nothing more.

Instead of giving people a kick up the backside and making them work for the club, for the place in the starting eleven, OGS seems to like putting the old arm around the shoulder and loving everyone. It's excruciating. If he loved Fred any more than he does he'd be up his backside.

Not everyone wants to stay, though. Oh you want to leave? No problem, we'll pay you more and be one big happy family. Phil Jones has done nothing for how long, and must be sitting there laughing his proverbial off! Mata probably can't believe his luck either.

Paul Pogba, who is essentially a ring-leader in the dressing room (and a terrible influence on the younger players), has "hmm'd" his way to leaving on a free next season.. Donny V. Bk must be wondering what the heck he's got himself into... De Gea was destined to go to Real Madrid until MU paid him more, and now he just loves not winning silverware in rainy, dull Manchester... Telles comes and goes like the weather... Don't even get me started on Martial - a guy who could have all the talent in the world, but chooses not to.

Yes, we've seen glimpses of emerging talents through the youth system. But what is the point in bring through these young players and not playing them consistently? Rashford in particular needs to decide whether he's Mother Teresa or an athlete, and whether he's a winger or a centre-forward.

Until OGS leaves, nothing will change.

Sooooo... Roy Keane in, then?

I'm not 100% convinced by Ole myself (lord knows I've said on this very forum that I've lost faith in him more than once), and I do think he needs to win a trophy this season to truly secure his position despite the recent contract extension. I would still say he has the club headed in the right direction, but he will still make weirdly maddening tactical decisions (e.g. yesterday's starting XI).

I really don't know what to make of the VDB situation. Did Woodward buy him just because he could? It's nice to have depth in the more advanced midfield roles, but he'll never beat out Bruno or Pogba for a starting berth. I mostly blame Woodward for the weird purchases and nonsensical contract extensions — I can understand Mata, who is a highly respected player who's no doubt transitioning into coaching and isn't getting paid a ton or anything — but Jones!? Idiocy. I hope the new transfer team does a more coherent job than than Woodward did. So far, so good with Sancho and Varane coming in, but much dead weight / wages still need to be culled.

The goalkeeping situation is... weird. I'm sure they all wanted Henderson to grasp the job with both hands last season, but he didn't fully convince. And now that he's out recovering from COVID, De Gea has had a couple of very good matches, further muddling the issue.

The only issues I have with Pogba are his level of effort can be very inconsistent, and his horrible agent. So far this season he's been fully switched on and it's been amazing to watch. He has never been held up as anything but a positive influence in the changing room or training pitch. His horrible agent has run rings around Woodward and company and he may very well leave on a free. I do think there is still a good chance he will stay, however. I am as always conflicted on the matter, as he is an amazing player when fully dialed in. As I said before, closure either way is what I really want.

Your comments on Rashford are patently unfair. The manager picks his position, but it's clear to anyone his best position is coming in from the left and he is only fourth choice to play up front behind Cavani, Greenwood, and Martial. His fitness was the problem, not his activism: the lad played injured almost the entire last season, and the squad didn't have enough attacking depth to do without him. With Sancho on board and Greenwood furthering his development, now they do. I have no idea what's going on with Martial, but I'm also well out of patience with him. Cavani will be back soon and Martial will drop to the bench.

Like I said earlier, the defensive midfield situation is a real stumper. United's DMs are like City's CFs: strangely absent from the squad, as if the Manager and DoF don't think they're necessary. Maybe they honestly think Varane strengthens the defense so much that a new DM isn't necessary? He will help, but we need far better than Fred or Matic in that role to threaten for the league title.

Yes please! (speaking purely as a Liverpool fan. ;) )

Man Utd during the Woodward era have not been especially savvy in the transfer market, so in terms of money paid for players maybe the squad is overrated, but it's still a hugely talented group of players, even if (again, under Woodward primarily) the club has suffered from a somewhat incoherent transfer strategy.

As I've said before, my take is that OGS is a good manager but probably not good enough for Man Utd's ambitions. He has indeed kept the club headed in the right direction, but I question his ability to actually get them to that desired destination. He is not on the same level as Klopp, Guardiola, Ancelotti, Tuchel, Benitez, Bielsa. He's still a 'young' manager of course, but he's in one of the most demanding of jobs, one that would tax even the most experienced and skilled manager.

It's hard to entirely disentangle OGS's approach from the tools Woodward has given him, but overall I still think Man Utd are too reactive, not agile enough in changing tack during matches, and the squad is too much a collection of (admittedly generally good to excellent) parts rather than a fully coherent whole (both in composition and employment, which maybe splits the blame fairly evenly between Woodward and OGS). I don't think Man Utd would necessarily do worse under, for example, (*controversy Klaxon*) Sean Dyche...but big clubs have particular expectations and demands and OGS, for all his inexperience, has the magic stamp of 'Man Utd club legend' on him, which does have some currency with supporters, and he comports himself well. As a parallel case, Lampard was clearly not good enough at Chelsea, but many fans were still angry to see him go - right up to the point Tuchel delivered a Big Cup.

And re: Rashford, I've never seen anything to suggest that his activism has the slightest negative effect on his game.

Not feeling confident ahead of tonight’s match against Leicester. Not sure why.

Leciester are a really good club, not pushovers by any stretch. Could be a quite a good match.

Good start for us. Although the goal scorer has just gone down in a horrible tackle.

I don't think it was deliberate, but yes not good.

Now two up.
With two goals scored, I think West Ham have this one safely in the bag; a very good victory against what is a damned good team.

No, it wasn't deliberate, but it was very ugly and utterly irresponsible; that could have led to a nasty leg break, or a horrible injury.

3-1 now. Antonio just became our highest ever PL goal scorer.

Pfft. Look at that scoreline!!

What a start to the season for Hammers!!!
Agreed!

Absolutely! Very happy Hammer here. Palace up next at home. Could we win our first three? You’d not bet against it.
Just as you'd not bet (or, I wouldn't place such a bet) against our losing our first three.

Sigh.

But, needs must, and courtesy, decency and generosity require that I salute your achievement and wish you well while you enjoy - relish, savour - a spell at the top of the PL table.

Anyway, a terrific (and well deserved) night. Enjoy.

Truth be told I'm not much of a gambler. Not really my thing. But I'm quite happy to pick up points now. Once we get into the Europa League fixtures we might struggle a bit more with the size of our squad. Hopefully we can get a few players in before the end of the month.

That's the unfortunate consequence of a club with less cash being successful...Saints struggled big time last time we were in Europe. Thankfully it was a brief sojourn.

While it's nice to go a long way in Europe and establish some street cred, it does wear out your players when you don't have two full playing squads plus back-ups.

We certainly don’t have two full playing squads! What cost us last season was when players like Rice and Antonio were injured. That’s why we could do with Lingard coming in! But I think that ship has sailed.

I hope United and West Ham can find a compromise and make a deal for Lingard. There's still time to do so, and it's in the best interest of both clubs and the player himself to make it happen.

Kudos to West Ham — that was some performance yesterday.

Don't want to get my hopes up too much, but the Saul Niguez chatter has picked up again. While he would still need to play as part of a double pivot in midfield, he would be a huge improvement on Fred, both defensively and in attack. Apparently Chelsea are also in for him, but their midfield is already pretty well stocked.

Shame about the red card for Leicester (though thoroughly deserved), that might have been a much closer match...but Hammers fans will be pleased!

I assume Liverpool (who are, or at least were, interested in hm) won't compete with Man Utd or Chelsea for him on price. Even for a loan, apparently. With Wijnaldum and now Shaq gone two good midfielders have departed, so it would be ideal to have more depth there.

Agree it’s never good for a sending off to effect a game. But I think we were on top before and I’m not sure the result would have been all that different. Antonio is on fire at the moment.
