He had two deals on the table and his wife said in no uncertain term she would never go to Saudi Arabia due to their hatred of women. His other choice was MLS and he has a home in Miami already.
I'm glad he's doing US. Makes sense from a notoriety standpoint.

Also great for Apple and MLS.

Congrats on West Ham winning a European trophy. It just goes to show that if you give Moyes time and the money to allow him to get the transfers in he wants then he will get the team somewhere. He never had that opportunity at Man United because every transfer he wanted the club failed to get because they had a new man in charge who knew nothing about transfers and thus screwed up everything to the point where Moyes made a last min desperate attempt to get somebody new into the club because the team he inherited from SAF were past it, even though they had just won the league.

As for Messi, if what was mentioned about his wife is true then I say good for her because for too long many Arab countries have done a disservice to their women. As for the deal(s) to get him to the MLS, I have not doubt each one is on condition of him scoring an x amount of goals or getting the team to win trophies/win the league.

Ah.

That makes sense.

Actually, I had wondered about that, and whether the preferences of partners (both male and female) of prominent sportsmen would be a factor in determining such a choice.

It would be in mine.

In fact, I had also wondered whether the sports media - who can be selectively myopic when it suits them - would firstly, see this, and secondly, report on it.

I think that we may see this happen in other cases, also.

Years ago, I knew the family of a cardiologist who had refused to travel with him to Saudi Arabia for that exact same reason. He travelled alone - which put an enormous strain on his marriage - while they remained in the UK.

His other choice was MLS and he has a home in Miami already.
This makes complete sense, then.

I've read gossip that CR7's wife is already fed up with live in Saudi Arabia, notwithstanding the absurd amount of money he's getting there.

Years ago, people were gossiping about Zidane's wife, she pushed for a transfer in Spain.

No surprise.

I cannot imagine how any woman - especially a western woman - would choose to live there.

Let the chap play football there, but I would expect that families would choose to remain someplace where life is considerably more congenial, especially if you are a woman.

Ah, interesting.

The amounts of money one can earn in the country is ridiculous but still, married western women still have to follow the rules of the country and that means they beholden to their men, a concept western women struggle with due to the freedoms they've grown accustomed to in their home country. The husbands will be extremely wealthily men when their contracts is up, it's whether their wives can go the distance of the contract.

The likes of Messi and Ronaldo need to get as much money in the bank as they can before they end their playing career because once that happens, nearly all their sponsorship deals will dry up, marketing will dry up because they will no longer be able to sell shirts with their name on or pictures of them in club team colors and having a family to look after, the money can very quickly dry up if they are not careful. Hence why we see some players ending their careers in Arab countries or in China where clubs there pay ridiculous amounts of money as well.

She is not exactly his wife and from what I have seen and read along the years I believe she is a lot smarter and resilient that the typical WAG.
I may be wrong but she will suck it him, he will suck it up and soon enough his new jet (the old one was getting small, who can blame him?) will do a final trip to his new home in Lisbon (well, more exactly Cascais) or Madrid.

If Messi or Ronaldo ever run out of money they really will have made some poor decisions.

I bet Declan Rice's agent has increased the value of the player just because he's now won a trophy with West Ham. It's a bit like the holiday season, everything at the resorts stay the same but out of season prices are low but inseason prices increase astronomically. It is the same with players, their skill level, attitude towards the game, their overall health stays the same but win nothing and their value is low but win something and their value increases astronomically.

It won’t matter if we get £200 million for him. We will be a poorer team without him. Going out and buying players isn’t that simple.
Hope he stays, but I doubt he will.

Rather, it is not so much the lack of "freedoms" (I would prefer to consider them basic civil, or human, rights) that make living in such a society a nightmare for women (and a struggle for many men), rather, it is that the extraordinary level of restrictions imposed on women, and the constraints on women's lives, mean that making any sort of a life in such a society is well nigh impossible.

Yes, I understand that.

..... extraordinary level of restrictions imposed on women, and the constraints on women's lives, ........
This is what I mean about 'freedoms'. The women are not allowed to dress how they want, they are not allowed to go where they want unless accompanied by their husband or by a male relative. They are not allowed to say what they want because they are 'restricted' from doing so and thus have 'constraints' put upon them, basically meaning it amounts to loss of 'freedoms' they would otherwise enjoyed in their home country.

This is probably why a lot of well known players do not end up playing in many Arab countries and some other countries because their wives/girlfriends do not want to live in countries that oppresse's women and who can blame them.

Get a 1 year contract, get rich very quick then live out the rest of the days as a football pundit :)

Unless they're as smart as Michael Jordan who has earned more from his name and likeness after he had stopped playing than when he was an active player. But I don't know if either Messi and CR7 have that kind of charisma and marketability, maybe Messi can try to build it in the USA, same with CR7 had he chosen to play there rather than Saudi Arabia.

I agree that careers are short and players need to amass as much money as they can but, in the case of CR7, considering the amount of money he already has, it looked a bit like greediness to me.

I don't think he's worth more than £70m on a good day

Whats probably gonna happen is Arsenal go in with 80m, then 85m, then 90m, then 95m. Then Chelsea will come it at 96m + Colwill. And West Ham will take it.

Ouch.

That is too close to the bone for comfort.

Well, if that does happen, then Chelsea will have yet another expensive (if excellent) player added to their already stratospherically expensive and bloated squad who will have to squeeze into their squashed changing room and who may not get much by way of game time.

Numbers don’t lie. Especially when you consider it’s in a mediocre team.

With Mason Mount leaving Chelsea I think there is less chance him going there.
