So, now it seems West Ham will have the dubious honour of being the first away team in a Premier League match at Kenilworth Road, ever...
Great! They’ll be well up for it and we will lose. I believe we had a similar game against Forrest last year.

Yo Mister @Scepticalscribe when you starting new thread or are you amending the name of this thread nearer to the Community Shield day.
No, I won't amend (the title of) this one; instead, I shall start a new one.

Actually, @Lord Blackadder used to start this thread annually.

In more recent times, or years, I seem to have inherited this pleasant duty.

My own preference is to start a fresh thread for the new season as we approach the Community Shield; however, I would not be averse to starting it in early August.

To my mind, friendlies don't count as "the new season".

Official announcement hopefully today

West Ham insiders still at it. They just can’t help themselves lol.

West Ham have announced the departure of Rice, as has Rice himself in a gracious statement; as for now, (but we expect it imminently) we still await an announcement from Arsenal.

Another one (possibly) headed for Saudi Arabia:

Deeply depressing to see this happen (yet again); I know the money one can earn in Saudi Arabia while playing soccer is spectacular, but, really, there are - or ought to be - some things that money cannot buy.

Ah.

The signing of Declan Rice (by Arsenal) has been (finally) confirmed by Arsenal, and he has completed his move to the club, appearing in the coming season's new strip for the usual unveiling photographs.

In any case, for the past few days, increasingly less subtle hints had been dropped that an announcement to this effect would take place today, or this week-end.

So much fanfare and hype...i hope he works out for them.

I'm curious about Arsenal's outgoings now. Chelsea have been incredibly efficient with their clear out...even if somewhat annoying.

Will Partey, Tierney, Balogun, Cedric, Holding, Pepe, Tavares etc stay or go

Fabinho and Henderson going to Saudi doesn't really make sense for Liverpool. They still needed 1-2 midfielders with them around. Now they maybe need 3?

Also surprised Utd haven't been more agressive with Kane pursuit. Signing a 20yr old to come and be your main number 9, in a league he's never played in before, is just asking for trouble.

I would like Partey and Tierney to stay and maybe send Balogun out on loan again.

The rest you mentioned yup they all need selling.

Holding has been solid for us, and has been an excellent and mature voice of reason and responsibility and experience in the dressing room.

However, the team has evolved beyond what he has to offer as a player - unfortunately, he really isn't at the standard required for a team challenging for a top place; nevertheless, I would regret his deaprture.

Re the remainder, well, yes. Time to wave bye bye to them.

Partey is an excellent player, but seems to have been exceptionally injury prone, and has missed large chunks of each season ever since he was bought, which has been to the detriment of the team.

When he plays, he is excellent, but he does not seem to be able to play as often as would be desirable or ideal.

I've been reading some stats: Apparently, he has missed 37 games over the past three seasons, whereas Declan Rice (a signing that I am delighted with) has missed only seven games in that same time period.

In my opinion Gary O’Driscoll partially to be blamed for our injury woes. Good news he left Arsenal for Manchester United last month.

Partey off to Middle East as well.
I have very mixed feelings about this.

One is a reduced respect for any player who makes this choice (yes, I am more then aware of the compelling financial incentives, but other considerations - the current rate of exchange for integrity and your soul - may also come into play).

Another is regret re Partey, who was excellent, and who made a significant difference to us (Arsenal) on the pitch when he was able to play.

A third is relief, because, to be quite candid, Partey was never able to play quite as often as I had hoped, as his injury record was a cause for concern; he was injury prone, and increasingly hors de combat, and out of action for long periods of time, which, ultimately, cost the team.

Good players who spend a long time injured are a gamble.
We’ve tried those many times and I don’t think they ever pay.
Andy Carroll
Freddie lumberg
Two of our more expensive mistakes.

Partey could never stay fit and i think thats why Arteta was desperate for Rice. Also there were some off-field issues going on.

He's an immense player but at some point you have to cut your losses. Will be interesting to see who comes in as a replacement Caicedo? Lavia?

Agreed.

Yes, the key consideration was "when he (Partey) was able to play" (he was terrific) because, to be quite candid, he wasn't able to play for us all that often because he was all too frequently out of action due to injury.

Fitness issues?

Off-field issues?

Okay: This, I hadn't known.

I had simply assumed that he was exceptionally prone to injury, and that - while an excellent player - his all too frequent absences cost the team a lot.

The current rumor (and nothing about this deal has, to my knowledge, been confirmed publicly as yet) is that Henderson has already agreed terms with Al Ettifaq, though Liverpool has not yet agreed to a transfer fee. Klopp wanted him to stay on and the club consequently will haggle over a fee.

Barney Ronay wrote a good piece on the context of the deal that eloquently echoes my thoughts on it. And Ronay is right when he points out that we are all culpable for this. Every ounce of toleration of sportswashing is our collective responsibility. The fact that most fans don't want to face up to that reality (and many angrily, even viciously, deny it) doesn't make it ok or make it go away. These big fees and wages are bribes to draw players to a crap league and a country with a terrible human rights record in order to use them to make the regime look better / distract people from what they are doing.

And it's working. Henderson is on the record as being morally opposed to the ways nations like Saudi Arabia treat people. He is now an important member of a project aimed at ensuring that the Saudis' barbaric social oppressions at home will continue without harming their plans at growing their international reputation and business interest. In return he will earn £100,000 per day in Saudi Arabia.
