It’s a shame that some cannot do this. Living in Australia, I get to watch AFL, and there is no violence, and opposing fans often sit to together, and never segregated.
We also see many other sports, Rugby Union/League, Cricket etc, where hate is not omnipresent and respect is.

You have the squad to bounce right back, and your time in the PL would have filled the coffers a little to finance the push back.
A year out fighting to win the league, rather than survive, will make watching football somewhat more enjoyable.

This is generally true in the US. MLS, like most major American sports, is family-friendly and despite alcohol being served during matches genuine violence is quite rare. Anyone trying to start fights or being aggressive will have the cops on them pretty fast.

I remember once maybe 15 years ago or so West Ham played a pre-season friendly in Columbus. One West Ham fan who traveled from England for the match showed up drunk, rowdy, and tried to start fights in the Columbus supporters' section during the match. Rather than starting a riot, Crew fans simply let the police collect him and everyone returned to the match. (Important to add that all the other West Ham fans present were completely behaving themselves as far as I can remember).

Everton and Liverpools fans used to sit together in the stands during the Mercyside derbys (except for the Cop on Anfield and The Gwladys Street End at Goodison), but even that faded at the end of the 80s, and were mostly a thing of the past once we entered the Premier League era...

Tribalism ruining another good thing, I guess...

Yes but I apologised profusely about that. I had too many beers…. 😀

Joking aside I have never witnessed any sort of violence inside a ground personally. Outside only twice have I felt threatened outside a ground.

Once at Wolves. Once as I was travelling via London Bridge in my West Ham shirt (not even going to a game) by a bunch of Millwall fans who thankfully were being escorted by the police.

I've heard more than once, and on several different boards, that Millwall fans are some of the very worst.

A friend of mine was at the aforementioned Columbus Crew vs West Ham match. He said he had heard about a couple of minor incidents but didn't witness any firsthand.

Millwall fans are the very worst, and worse still, they revel and rejoice in this, seeing it and glorying in it as a part of their assumed identity.

They are the one club I truly detest, and devoutly hope to see them hammered, destroyed, annihilated, irrespective of when, where, or whom they play.

It wasn't a big deal - essentially one man being a jerk that I saw, and I heard about one other scuffle in the parking lot. I liked the way the Crew fans behaved - they were calm and didn't react to be the provocations.

So Nuno has confirmed he’ll be staying at West Ham to lead us back to the Premiership.

I have slightly mixed feelings about it, but I’m probably happier than if he left and we would be starting from scratch.

That said I’m still unsure which players will be at the club come August.

Yeah, that is the kicker.

It sure would be refreshing to see a few of the big stars want to stick around and get the club back into the Prem.

That only happens on Ted Lasso though...

I remember when we were relegated before, Jermaine Defoe put a transfer request in the following day and went to Spurs (for less money than we would have got). We never forgave him for that.

Financially it probably saves the club money. He's a good manager, certainly good enough to run a promotion campaign in the second division.

Honestly, I just feel bad for those that may lose their jobs, and the impact to the local economy. But, who knows, maybe more fans will go to games, as the cost may be more reasonable...

I was obviously bored, and wanted to see the historical volume of posts, on the subject of football, in particular the great threads started and continued by @Scepticalscribe , @R.Youden, @xUKHCx, @jaffacake, @Lord Blackadder and @Apple fanboy since 2008.

Fascinating to see, within a primarily US centric forum, how popular the round ball game is, and how consistently the interaction with the subject matter has been. There has been 50,1834 comments (and counting) No doubt soon, this thread will close, a new embryo formed, with a temporary distraction from this, when the WC 2026 commences.
Thanks to each and everyone who brought these threads to life, and to all the contributors who add their own special, unique flavour to the discussion.
