The 2025-2026 Football Thread

Both Spurs and West Ham had dreadful seasons, Spurs are incredibly lucky not to have gone down - they can't say they deserved to stay up given the fine margins, and next season will require huge improvement to avoid another relegation battle.

As for West Ham, condolences to @Apple fanboy - it could have gone either way, but now the focus just needs to be on next season's campaign.

We knew the odds were against West Ham, it’s sad to see them relegated with 39 points, doing everything they could. Unfortunately Spurs won and there it is.

Agree completely.

Had West Ham turned in this sort of performance just once more over the course pf the season, they would not now have been fighting relegation.

Commiserations to @Apple fanboy - I had truly hoped that West Ham would stay up.

Scant comfort to West Ham that they have been relegated with the highest number of points (39) since 2010-2011, (when Birmingham went down with 39 points); still less comfort can be derived from the fact that West Ham also hold the unenviable record for having amassed the highest number of points (42) in the Premier League era, yet still suffered relegation, in 2002-2003.

Sunderland (who have had a very good season) also seem to feature strongly in these dismal records.

I've just read in the Guardian that David Sullivan left his seat and departed the stadium well before full time; that is just disgraceful, lacking in grace, dignity and decency.

Sunderland also secured a European spot today. Decent brother must be overjoyed.

Discourteous, disrespectful, lacking in decency, dignity, decorum; these are days when you share what is happening, and show that you "are there" for the club, the fans, the players, the staff.

They have done very well this season.

I do recall that Decent Brother was delighted when the current manager was appointed - he thought it an excellent appointment and had great promise, and he is also impressed with the current owner.

Unfortunately, West Ham needed today's performance against Brentford and Newcastle. The odds were just too stacked against them
Commiseration to their fan base who don't deserve what the ownership have done.
Spurs basically limped over the line and Everton didn't show up till ET when it no longer mattered

Meanwhile,
Emery spoils Pep's home coming
LFC secure UCL...just
Sunderland and Bournemouth also enter Europe which is impressive given their resources
Brighton bring up the rear and stumble into Europe despite being dismantled at home

And thus concludes the 25/26 EPL season.

Feels like a new era is starting.
Pep's gone
2 Talented managers say goodbye
New younger managers coming in.
EPL veteran players moving on
New faces in Europe.
An EPL veteran relegated
And Arsenal reclaim the title after 2 decades

Its going to be an interesting summer re-WC and transfers

Yes, I am still pinching myself. I was there '97-'98, moved to the US in '00 and missed the celebrations in person. But, glad we're back at it.

Now, onto Saturday. Let's win that game, too...!

A welcome bonus, a terrific bonus (not least as it is only the second time we have reached the final of the Champions League) but icing on the cake as far as I am concerned.

I am happy with the Premier League - that was my preference and priority all season.

Yesterday, in the Guardian, I read that - throughout the course of the season - Arsenal conceded not a single penalty, and didn't receive a single red card.

Now, I don't doubt that there were certain occasions where some may feel that such sanctions may well have been warranted, but, nevertheless, it is an achievement to have finished the season without having received a red card, nor incurred a penalty.

In all seriousness, Arsenal played a fairly clean season (as did Liverpool, tied for second 'cleanest with Aston Villa with just one red and only 6 more yellows than Arsenal). Avoiding any red cards at all is ultimately sheer luck, but still a good record.

I suppose Gunners fans also enjoy seeing Spurs ranking as the second 'dirtiest' team by cards awarded this season (101 incl. 8 reds), behind only Chelsea.

I do hope that you enjoy wearing it.

Mind you, these past few days, I have seen people (actually, mostly - indeed, almost invariably - men, yes, of varying ages, some of whom are far from young, the kind with wrinkles, tufts of white hair and frequently also sporting glasses) happily and proudly wearing Arsenal shirts of varying vintages.
