Liverpool have strung together some wins, albeit against somewhat weaker opposition. Fundamentally, they still seem to be a team that will cough up a goal against everyone, and leak 2-3 against elite teams - all while struggling to score more than 1-2 goals. I can see a path to improvement if Wirtz and Ekitike can start regularly together and develop a genuinely productive partnership, with Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, and Gravenberch chipping in. Isak is out of the picture till whenever, and Salah is a wildcard.

On the other hand, I don't necessarily see the defense improving greatly - Konate has to be relied upon for lack of any alternative, and he is a weak point. If Gomez were reliable in terms of health he might be starting - but he can't. Set pieces are a big vulnerability - perhaps that can be shored up with the recent coaching change in that area.

I can see a third place finish being possible with a little luck, and barring any unforeseen factors. But that won't be easy.

I thought Arsenal looked very strong, with good players coming off the bench. If they continue in this form they are going to be hard to beat in the league and in the champions league.

It boils down to a two-horse race with Man City, and for Arsenal the key will be maintaining their formidable defensive record. I still see Man City as favorites regardless of the current odds. But this is probably Arsenal's best season inn a decade.

Amorim promptly unlearned any lessons he gleaned from the first half against Newcastle. Really, really poor game overall against Wolves yesterday — neither manager nor squad did anything very positive. We know the squad is decimated for reasons, but the heat will be coming up to a boil again. I'm definitely fearing the worst against Leeds next.

Leeds leak a lot of goals, but they've scored a decent amount as well. I feel like Liverpool can beat them if they go into the last 15 minutes with a two goal lead.

Meanwhile, in Stuff We Already Knew news...the Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled that Everton should have been awarded a penalty against Arsenal's William Saliba in their recent match.

Only really becomes relevant if Arsenal win the title by two points (as things stand) - but if they do, look for wailing and gnashing of teeth from Man City fans. What some call 'winning ugly' others call 'cheating and getting away with it'. 🤣

And yes, conventional wisdom claims it all balances out over the course of the season etc. etc.

Thats what 5 in a row? (Lampard, Tuchel, Poch, Potter, Maresca).

Almost £2bn spent and only 5 decent players in their squad. Caicedo, James, Cucurella, Palmer, Estevao

To walk away mid-season, from a potential severance package, also speaks volumes.

Chelsea have worn out yet another manager:

Chelsea is just a shoulder shrugging head scratching club lately with enough CEO experience tho the owner is new to the EPL as Barnard knows what he is doing, they think.
seems to me that James is the only functional player on the pitch as Enzo has his moments off the bench or staring now. the blues looked great beat Barça then controlled Villa a week ago then, wham, 1-2 loss over a 3-3- back re-formation. And now they will toss away many £s on over-rated players this month.
who knows...... if they win the next 2 UEFA matches, Napoli, Pafos they can finish top 10 and advance.

watching this club deteriorate this decade was sad in the blues nation
but fun for all outside Fulham Rd these past years.

Nathan Ake has rejected the chance to join West Ham from City. Hardly surprising given the reality of Championship football later this year.

Eddie Nketiah's hamstring injury has probably ruled him out of joining us as well.

Sigh. I am berating myself for being less exercised by this than I should be.

I wonder if a loan option could’ve been explored instead to get you to summer…

A very drab nothingburger of a match between Liverpool and Leeds. 0-0.

Slot has clearly been working to shore up the defending, but there is trouble at both ends at the moment, and failing to score against Leeds at Anfield is disappointing. Liverpool's wingback play has really withered post-Klopp, and that has impacted goalscoring. It's not as catastrophic as the internet screaming would indicate, but not super encouraging either. As matches go, this is one that would have been targeted as very winnable.

On the positive side the xG was good, the chances were there to be finished, and Alisson reaches his 100th clean sheet in the league, joining Pepe Reina.

Personally I’d rather you had beaten them. Leeds picking up points isn’t good for us.

Our next two games really are 6 pointers. Wolves and Forest. If we lose those two games I think we are gone.

Indeed.

Ouch.

Good luck.

I have just been closely examining the table, and, yes, hmmmm.

In your shoes, - while a significant gap of the deeply ominous variety has yet to truly open - I would prefer to be a little closer to the cluster of teams immediately above you.

Elsewhere, Sunderland - who were excellent in the first half - are currently still holding Manchester City - who have been joined by Rodri since half-time, who has just returned from a serious injury, and who is also, to my mind, the linchpin of their team - to nil all in the frozen and frigid north east.

Liverpool's wingback play has really withered post-Klopp, and that has impacted goalscoring.

Frimpong had a few promising moments going forward, but I agree with you they rely a lot on the attackers coming in from the wings, rather than the wingbacks coming up and allowing the attackers to be the extra man in the box.

I thought Leeds defended really well in numbers, and if Van Dijk’s header had been on target Liverpool would have got the 1-0 win. They had a few other half chances but nothing clear cut.

For a promoted side, Sunderland have been really smart.
Brought in quality players (Adingra, Roefs, Xhaka, Mukiele), and the manager sets them up really well to play to their strenghts. And they work hard
To be unbeaten at home after GW 19 in the EPL is quite impressive
It would be nice if they don't get gutted in the summer (or this window)

As for Spurs that result wouldn't have endeared Frank to the fans but its fair to wait till he has all his players available before judging him

Agent Xhaka doing it for Arsenal.

Man City dropping two points.
Sunderland played exceptionally well, and - notwithstanding the fact that I delight (for a variety of reasons, and not just my support of Arsenal) in the spectacle of any dropped points for City - richly and well deserved their point.

My brother (Decent Brother on these threads, who supports Sunderland, and has done so, faithfully, suffering through all of their endless trials, torments and agonising vicissitudes ever since he was a small lad many years ago when they won the FA Cup) will also be pretty chuffed.

Four matches today, two goals. Hangover.

After losing our championship-winning manager to Celtic (where he's ioff to a miserable start), Columbus have hired a new manager, Henrik Rydström, lately manager of Malmö FF. He's a proven title winner at a level probably not too far different from MLS, if culturally quite separate.

Columbus was a founding member of MLS in 1996, and Rydström is just our 9th manager. So equivalent to five seasons at Chelsea. 🤣

Frimpong had a few promising moments going forward, but I agree with you they rely a lot on the attackers coming in from the wings, rather than the wingbacks coming up and allowing the attackers to be the extra man in the box.

Some fans are already starting with the 'Slot Out,' but I'm not interested. This is a rebuilding year, plus injuries and Salah Spats, and a few other clubs are in the zone right now. Liverpool aren't drifting that far, really, but this probably won't be a year to remember.

We can't play a system using fullbacks like we still have a circa 2020 Robertson-Trent duo, because we don't. That's led to narrower/slower wing play, possibly exacerbated by Slot being concerned about defending. Which has in turn hampered offensive output. If Wirtz/Isak had hit the ground running maybe this would not have been a big issues, but I suspect it still would hurt us against packed defenses, as today.

To me, this season is a write-off - yet we're still in a good position to make a little bit of a European run and finish comfortably in the CL places. All while hopefully bedding in new signings and working out bugs. Is that so bad?

Next season will be more of a test to see if Slot can swim on his own terms. But I fear there will be a chronic lack of patience with him amongst fans from now on.

Given the circumstances, (namely, that he had been recently appointed, and coached, or managed, a team that needed renewal and hadn't been nurtured by him), I would argue that Slot did very well to win the Premier League last season, and I am not so sure that Liverpool fans fully realise this.

This season, it isn't just those Salah spats (and his loss in form), but I would imagine that there also the considerable upset and shock from the sudden, tragic death of Diogo Jota.

Re Sunderland, it isn't just that they are undefeated at home, it is also that they have the Premier League's third least goals conceded at the half way point of the season, also no mean achievement, and a tribute to the quality of their defence, and their sheer fighting spirit.

There are always some disaffected fans, unless you’re winning back-to-back championships. But I think Slot proved what he could do in the first season, and the Premier League is just a very competitive place even for the best managers and squads. Klopp only managed one Championship in his years in charge, I believe.

I think a clean sheet is a good thing in itself. It isn’t tenable to leak 2-3 goals per game to the better opposition, you have to stop the rot sometime. The PSG team that won the Champions League last year had the best balance of pressing and attacking that I’ve seen, and some very all around talented players.

Fair play to Sunderland. I assumed City would win considering 6 of Sunderland's players are away on AFCON duty.

Xhaka showed why he belongs in this league again. I'm actually glad he's been thriving since he left us.
Mukiele has been an astute signing that was apparently recommended by Xhaka to Regis

Nice to have 4 pts but it means nothing. We're only halfway through the season and the workload is going to increase

I just hope Rice recovers quickly, and we don't suffer any more damaging injuries

LFC and City will get better. Especially if they add Guehi and Semenyo respectively.
Unfortunately i don't see us signing anyone till summer.

Chelsea should've have kept Maresca till the end of the season. Then go for Glassner or Iraola. Now the wheels are likely to come off, i don't see how Rosenior comes into a new league to navigate the remaining Chelsea fixtures unscathed

Wolves need a miracle. West Ham and Burnley are walking a tight rope.

But 19 games to go, lets have it.

This Liverpool fan realises it. It was completely unexpected and brilliant. This season less so but maybe this is the season we should have had last time out.

Given our huge slump, I’d be happy for the season to finish now and take 4th.
