Could this affect the picnic? www.wirelessfestival.co.uk

Oh crap! As Mitty said, I wonder how far out their festivities will stretch. It's a huge park and there may be other suitable places in the park if the festival pushes that far out.

I have sent an email to the wireless festival people and if I don't hear back I'll give them a call on friday and see if I can get some answers about this.

To be more serious: The festival will probably be at the open field to the east of the picnic spot, but the question is how far out they place the fence... and - even in the best case where we can stay just outside the perimeter - if the toilets will be inside the festival area...

And where to park the car... As I guess the closest carpark, to our little patch, will now be either closed off or full from quite early...
Other parks would be good. We could return to Regents Park, but a bit closer to the toilets...

Just wanted to point out that there's a whole 'other half' of Hyde Park on the Kensington Gardens (West) side of the Serpentine. I'm sure we could find an alternate location there. I'd be happy to scout/photograph and grab some GPS coordinates if necessary.

On the upside no one would have to lug their iPod Hi-Fi to the park. But then again we'd have to listen to crappy music...

Looking at google maps and youtube videos of the last event makes it look like it will just be in the open area here without encroaching upon our picnic territory. Very good points about the transport being rammo and parking being tricky though.

Bugger. Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens is a fantastic spot when it's not overtaken by a festival. Sorry everyone.
Not completely sure what we should do here, if moving parks entirely is necessary or not.

And thank you to those of you who have offered to help in various ways on this. :)

Should we return to the site of the first picnic? That one had toilets, parking, ice cream, and wasn't overly busy.

It also allowed dogs :)

Regent's Park would be good as it's not in the congestion charge zone...
... but is there parking?

Yep. You can park in the Inner Circle road (and maybe Outer Circle too). I parked there for the first picnic I came to.

Edit to add: the Congestion Charge is irrelevant: it's only Mon-Fri.

Excellent!

Not 100% sure I'll be there, but I'll try...

So what do you all want to do? Shall we move back further into Hyde Park (which I'm not even sure we'll have to as this spot is already away from the open areas anyway) or move to Regent's Park?

I'd be happy to move to Regent's Park for a change.

Regent's Park sounds fine.

Maybe a tad closer to the toilets this time? I don't wanna go in to the bamboo forrest (or whatever it was) this time. I lost a pair of very nice sun glasses in there... ;)

Is this area - on the other side of the lake - any good?

I didn't go to the very first London picnic but I was under the impression it was in a good spot. The second one (also in regent's park) was nearer to the toilets but it felt a little exposed. We also might like to consider locations that aren't likely to be crowded (families? who may or may not appreciate drinking and music, which there is sure to be).

The spot from last year's picnic at Hyde Park was brilliant because it was near the toilets but still hidden away a bit, AND when it rained we were sheltered under that tree for quite a while until the leaves reached that critical moisture point that forced evacuation. :p

I don't really mind where we go because I'm sure we can make it work anywhere but I don't know how everyone else feels about it.

Sorry, won't make it this year. I have delayed my annual London trip to the end of August to celebrate my 30th birthday in London at the LED Festival (Leftfield ftw!).

See you next year! (unless they somehow convince The KLF to appear at a festival of sorts :D )

I've spoken to a few people who seem pretty in-the-know and I'm confident that we're going to be just fine where we are. The festival gates cannot go into the trees and they cannot block off the public toilets. The festival be in the open areas a fair enough distance away from our picnic spot.

If it becomes a problem for any reason we can move further into the park across the Serpentine but I think it's going to be fine. :)
