I've spoken to a few people who seem pretty in-the-know and I'm confident that we're going to be just fine where we are. The festival gates cannot go into the trees and they cannot block off the public toilets. The festival be in the open areas a fair enough distance away from our picnic spot.

If it becomes a problem for any reason we can move further into the park across the Serpentine but I think it's going to be fine. :)

Any idea how parking will be affected?

I see the festival is using the parade ground area of hyde park. Which is fairly close to where we were last year...

Is this area - on the other side of the lake - any good?
It's on a slope so no good for ball games, but it's quite secluded from the path thanks to low hanging foliage so good on the privacy front even with the open lake in front of it. The only problem is that if the weather's good it can be quite popular.

I don't know for sure. I suppose there could be fewer spaces.

The alternative mentioned, Regent's Park, is going to have perhaps a bigger problem for those using public transport, which I imagine will be the larger extent of the picnickers. The circle, metropolitan, hammersmith & city lines are all completely shut near that area (link - if this URL doesn't expire) and these perpetual frickin tube closures may mean a longer walk, with picnic gear in tow. Also, for some dumb reason Regent's Park likes to close their gates AND bathrooms at dusk. (some of you may remember a few debacles with that)

For those who want to attend but are planning to drive and feel seriously concerned about parking, send me a PM, I may have a solution for parking elsewhere in london and taking the tube in.

I know some of you may be worried about Hyde Park now but I think it's going to be fine. If it turns out that it is all a bit too much near our spot, it's a huge park and we can move back a ways.

I've created a public twitter account for all picnic related updates and information:

Because it's public anyone can view it so you need not worry if you're not a twitter sort. However, this is where current information and updates will be posted on picnic day.

I’d love to come but might be in Barrow-in-Furness on that day, due to family commitments, such a shame really as I’m usually living in Australia!

Do any demi’s know if Willard will be there?

What sort of time is everyone meeting up?

I will be riding (my bike) around the M25 that day and could make a detour. I really meant to come the last couple of years but work meant it wasn't going to happen. Be a shame to miss out this year considering I am in the area, kind of.

Wow that's irritating... It's my sisters birthday on the 2nd, and that means I won't be able to leave until the following morning (having to spend the day/evening with family, drinking involved xD).

I live up near blackpool.. So unless I left mega early (or bought a plane ticket), wouldn't really be able to get there on time.

Well that's annoying :/ Have fun anyway guys :)

I can trump you on that.

As much as I would love to attend this event -- I shall be otherwise engaged. Why?

July 3rd 2010 is my 18th Birthday!

anjinhamarota asked earlier in the thread about the possibility of an England World Cup match taking place that day – now our group has been sorted out we know that we will indeed have a quarter-final match at 3pm that Saturday afternoon, assuming we get past the Germans this Sunday of course.

So, what I'm actually saying is that the Germans will have a quarter-final match at 3pm that Saturday.

^^ So - assuming some freak incident, like a local micro black hole deflecting all the German shots and England does win the penalty shootout - wouldn't it be possible for someone to bring a portable TV...?

When the Roskilde festival in -92 was put on hold for the Denmark - Germany final, we could probably tolerate that some gather around a TV set for 90+ minutes on the outskirts of the picnic area... :D

---

On another note: The first long time weather forcast, including the picnic Saturday, is in...and it's looking surprisingly good:

Probably gonna change a few times over the next week or so, though... :(

I was thinking a little radio or something could keep us all up to date on how the Germans are doing in the quarters. :D

Good weather is always excellent of course, but even more so if there's the possibility that England might be playing – pubs tend to get very busy when they're in action, so cramming us into somewhere might be a bit tricky if the weather lets us down.

Please, NO!

The park is a great place to get away from that rubbish. Let's not spoil it!
That's agreed then, firestarter's refereeing the kick-around. :)

GAH! Damn football!

I had a bad feeling about this date but I listened to the masses. Too late now though I suppose. I just really hope the weather is good so we don't have to squeeze into a pub.
