Sure, it's fun to discuss, but don't draw conclusions from a few shaky-cam images and tidbits of potential information. This is more than likely a prototype. Just wait until the release for the full feature set and design. The number of crazed fanboys drawing their conclusions and working themselves up into a tizzy is both amusing and depressing.

Try being a bit more neutral. Your heart rate will thank you.

That sim card slot, is it for a normal sim or a micro sim (like the iPad)?
Micro sim wouldn't make lot of sense for international release... Only AT&T has those micro simcards...

Lots of techies/geek are switching to Android, ok. But a lot of casual user are switching to Blackberries for the only reason that the design is nice.

If Apple is not only uncapable of competing with Android innovation but also get ass ugly, then some forecaster are right: it's the beginning of the end of Apple.

Other question: Where the **** are the 4G networks??
And i'm not talking about the us only...so it's likely that the "iphone 4G" won't be called this way...

Would have liked a slightly larger screen, but overall I think it's a decent enough design. Compared to the 2005 digital photo frame design of the iPad its a masterpiece. I just hope the micro-sim rumour isn't correct.

need a point of clarification....

Gruber is wrong and all the arm-chair know-it-all's at MacRumors are right...?

good night

This may be a test model, nothing more.

Two points -

1. This looks awful
2. The battery does appear to be removable.

Neither of these two characteristics would ever make it to a final model but it is likely that this could be a test phone used to test component parts before a final chassis was approved and / or constructed.

the next iphone will definitely have some sort of curved back. I have an original iPhone. I just doesn't fit well in the palm of your hand. The 3G and 3GS are much more handy.. I don't think apple will go backwards in this respect... other than that...

I don't care for user-removeable battery... just five me more battery life...

multitouch back? While for us geeks it would be cool, I guess most people would be confused about it. We "know" for quite some time that apple is more focused on the consumer market than the geek-market. That's why I say no to multitouch back.

Front facing camera is definitely possible due to the popularity of Skype.

so long.

You aren't being informational; you are just stating your opinion.

I am inclined to believe Gruber:

I am not certain that this looks like the actual production unit Apple intends to ship to consumers. I think it’s a testbed frame — thicker, with visible (un-Apple-like) seams, meant to fit in 3GS cases so as to disguise units out in the wild. It’s hard to tell from the photos. But I think it is the real deal in terms of the internals and display being next-gen iPhone hardware, and the new glass back. Put another way: the front looks legit, the back looks legit, but the sides I’m not sure about. A front-facing camera and 960 × 640 display are two things I believe are slated for the next iPhone.

Am I the only one who's thinking that, if Apple went through the trouble of designing this prototype to be "disguised in the wild" they wouldn't have plastered a big Apple trademark and "iPhone" on the back?

At the same time it looks fake, it doesn't!
First i think a ceramic or glass back wouldn't work, it will always need plastic cause of the network, then a removable back.. i don't think so, apple never did that before, not even on iPod's! if this is the one i think it will be closed, then that SSD card rumor.. its even worse... apple is all against piracy! how can they use a removal SSD card on an iPhone?

In my opinion this design is not bad, when the first iPhone came out, i wasn't that attracted by the design, but when Steve Jobs turned it on, i was amazed!
Anyways, this can probably be the next iPhone, cause looking at the iPad sides and the Macbook Pro sides, you can find it similar to this iPhone, you can notice that in this images.

Apple will NEVER make a phone with removable battery! Are you people listening to anything apple says? The less structure for removable battery the more battery they can put in their phones. Thats been their philosophy since unibody. The new iphone will be unibody with non-removable battery. End of story. This is only a prototype if anything.

This really is not anything at all.

Speculative:

The new iPhone won't have:
- Removable Battery
- A return to a flat back and metal look / back

The new iPhone will have:
- Front facing camera
- Rear Camera at 5 megapixels
- Higher Res LED Screen (will help get phone thinner and lighter with sharper graphics)
- 64gb option
- OS 4 on shipment (obviously but perhaps the best feature!)

Maybe this is one of a few possible prototypes. Now Apple can cross reference who had access to this particular prototype to figure out who is the leaker. Someone may be in for a very bad week at Apple.

decapitation imo :)

previous iphone prototypes that were found on ebay had the apple logo on them... though i'm not sure those were real either

Clear sapphire is only good for Arc Lamps. Sapphire doesn't actually have a lot of uses apart from lighting systems and as Gemstone jewelry.

My Movado watch has a sapphire crystal. Virtually scratch proof.

My point is that it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of "disguising" the phone by making it look so much different than current iPhones, then just put the iPhone logo, etc. on the back. It's a fake.

Maybe a purposeful diversion

Apple, imo, does sometimes divert people's attention ahead of product launches with things like this and comments that underplay people's expectations. I'm sure some talk of removable batteries which is POINTLESS will be a win-win for apple when it gets the impact it wants for the launch in June (although I hasten to add that WWDC announcement of the iPhone is not a cert due to the slipping shipment dates of the iPad).

I remember clearly the comment weeks before introduction to the sound of 'we have not quite figured out how to bring a super drive the the powerbook, we simply cannot get it thin enough'. We all know what happened next.

i think ValSalva may have it right... Apple maybe weeding out a leak. i'd love to be the one in charge of figuring out who the source is

*sigh* working at apple must be so much fun! :p

Micro sim wouldn't make lot of sense for international release... Only AT&T has those micro simcards...

And they didn't have them 3 months ago...

Here's the reason why a micro SIM makes no sense: Don't you think that Apple/AT&T want to keep people from being able to put the SIM from their iPhone in their iPad?

I just can't believe Apple will go with a user replaceable battery on the iPhone. They entire laptop line has migrated to contained batteries, it just seems like a huge u-turn. It's either a fake, an early prototype, or something they leaked on purpose in order to get rumors swarming.
