There was a rumour about this too. Gizmodo didn't get a chance to test it with any running operating system so we never know.

Although, there is a rumour AND a patent supporting a ceramic back.

Not sure if this was stated before (did not have time to read all 18+ pages in this thread), but what's to say this is not a "test" casing, made for easy access to the battery so the tester can swap batteries to gauge which battery is best. I have to believe Apple tests out multiple battery designs and a case like this is needed to make the testing efficient, so the tester does not have to crack open the case every time to test out a different battery. Just a thought...

Luckily I read all 18 pages for you (!) and yes, this has been stated several times. I think we are all agreed that it's a prototype, although after looking at the vids from gizmodo, I'm starting to think this is much closer to a production version than I originally thought.

Don't like the volume buttons, and have questions how the microsim will fit in with international carriers. Everything else sits well with me.

The volume button is going to double as a camera shutter release in the camera app.

I'm going to confidently say that it is not a prototype. Apple Prototypes give themselves away by the word Prototype in large letters.

This is a production sample.

I don't expect any significant changes from this design to release.

Testbed Frame and Buttons Like Lego House

It's perfectly obvious to me that the frame surrounding this iPhone prototype --with its seams and all other departures from Apple's recent design norm-- is merely an approximation to the final product in the same way that a Lego house exterior might be a model for a real house in appearance. It's made to get apart quickly and make changes inside without wrecking the plastics and other parts as one prys back from front and so on.

The same goes for the buttons.

People should not get their hopes up for a user-changeable battery; forget it! The iPhone for 2010 should echo the appearance of the iPad and current MacBook Pro computers in order to keep the product line visually "current".

PS. I feel sorry for the chap who dropped this in that bar!

LMAO at all the arm-chair design and usability experts at MacRumors, and their wrongness...

BTW, thins entire phone found episode is yet another great "trial balloon" or "controlled leak" by Apple themselves....

Truth.

Unconvinced

First, prototype or not, how does the phone pictured in the iPad leak legitimize this design? I see no similarity whatsoever between them. The unit in the iPad leak has some kind of black surround (probably just someone's 3G with a silicone sleeve) and is too blurry to distinguish any of the features shown in this batch of photos.

Second, I was one of the aluminum purists who hated the transition to curved plastic in the 3G. Contrary to the popular assumption, I have neither "grown to like it" nor "changed my mind". It still reminds me of a throwback to the hard candy, clear, blobby Apple designs of the early nineties. Not to mention the dock connector cracking issues.

If the iPad, iMac, MacBook, and MacBook pro unibody theme is indicative of a broader trend in Apple product design, I see the next generation iPhone looking essentially like a smaller iPad: Seamless aluminum, flat-back with a subtle taper at the edges. And technically, they don't need to go with aluminum to accomplish that design -the back of the iMac is plastic, but still complements the design standard. What would really put it over the edge would be some flush buttons, like the battery level check and power button on the MacBook line.

Just give me an HD screen so I can ditch all the standard definition media fro mmy iTunes collection for good, and throw in a front-facing camera.

No matter what Captain Cupertino introduces, I'll buy it, and I'll l:apple:ve it. Cuz my 3G is starting to wheeze and cough.

I like it. I can barely hold onto my 1G Touch, that's why it's in a fairly large case instead of a skin. I'd like a slightly wider edge on the 4G. Add a Tmobile version and I'll trade in my phone and Touch for an iPhone.

No...

Looks like a NOkia

I still think/hope this to be a fake.
Why didn't we see the iPhone switched on in a picture, while they said it boots but shows a recovery screen?
Couldn't they count the pixels with an magnifying glass?
Why change a perfectly well made phone which sells millions.
Ok,upgrade it but leave the design more or less intact.

Do you honestly think gizmo do would throw away their reputation on a fake? Come on, this is the biggest story they have ever broken.

You think it is fake because they didn't count the pixels? Please. More info will come in time, unless Apple legal gets there first! :D

No,of course not,I just thought they could have counted the pixels to know if it's high res/HD.
They asked themselves whether or not the display would be a high res display, then I just say, count the goddamn pixels.
And,I actually meant the whole phone, who says the outer casing will be like it shows in this picture.
It could well be a prototype and so they still could change the casing.
That's what I actually meant.
Cheers

Its apparently made from the same substance as Cubic Zirconia, as per the post from another forum.

From Wikipedia:
"The modern ceramic materials, which are classified as advanced ceramics, include silicon carbide and tungsten carbide"

I'm guessing this silicate their talking about is also a type of ceramic.

Personally, I quite like the design. I was dissapointed with the design of the 3G vs the original iPhone. But I still upgraded because of what the 3G could do. I think it will be the same for most of us if this turns out to be the final version.

This iPhone 4 is Real and I Like it!!!!!!

I really like the look of this new iPhone 4. This looks more modern and professional, and magical, and revolutionary, and A+. Thank you Steve Jobs.:apple:

I for one will be one of the first people in line to get my new iPhone 4 with 2nd mic or removable battery, or what ever people think that it is. I really dont care what it is I just like the look. alot!!! :D

My 3G needs this upgrade, and my wife needs to upgrade from my original iPhone to my 3G. It's all justified :D
