I'm usually the person who never has issues with Apple products.

Just looking at this thread title though, reminded me I needed to charge my battery.

This is my first iPhone that I've had to charge every single day even with low usage.

Some real arrogance in here, quite amazing, just because you don't have any issues with your iPhone it means nobody else is allowed? Don't be so quick to think its all user issues, I don't think its right to have a phone but to expect a reasonable amount of usage from it you have to turn everything off.

We are not talking luxuries, you need to turn location services off, push off, quit all apps so nothing runs in the background, thats before you start on turning imessage off, bluetooth off etc. Not a lot of point having the thing if you can't use it! I have come from a 3G to 4S this week and the battery life is not good compared to that old beast, I have everything turned off so it's just like my old 3G - I dare not use any of the new features incase I drain the battery before I can recharge it as then I might not be able to use it as a phone - afterall the intended use for me, if not most of you! Sure you can turn stuff off, but it would be better if Apple made the battery last a little longer so we could actually use the features they have given us. You don't get a big warning on their website saying you should keep everything off if you want the phone to last a full day, althought I'm sure it's there in the small print! Apple apologists will always argue in their defence, I have used Mac's since something like 1988 and would never own a windows PC, but I don't agree that Apple is faultless, they make mistakes, some of you would never consider that a possibility!

My partner and son have a 4 each and have none of the same issues, they have everything on that I have to turn off (not bluetooth, no use for that), so the only thing I have that they don't I believe is Siri, and I used that once the day I got it.

I'm sure with responses like the OP got many people would think twice before posting on here, they fear they may be attacked by the pack-hounds. It would have taken no more effort to ask a few simple questions - whats he using it for, has he tried this and that, has he seen these links to other threads he might find useful. Instead people roll their eyes before rolling their sleeves up and get on with the moaning.

I read MR every day, I think pretty much without fail, I read RSS feeds to my phone and I browse forums 6 days out of 7, but I hate posting for these very reasons. I came on today to talk about my own issues with my 4S, saw the thread and thought I would see what help the OP had been offered.....

If you don't want to read the thread you don't have to, there is no requirment to post in every thread, so just ignore it and move on, moaning about someone posting a genuine question is as bad as coming on here to troll.

Interestingly most of those who jumped on the OP registered this year, most have only been here a few years max, I wonder if its just the people who have been around a bit longer who have more manners and are that little bit kinder? Remember kids, just because they are only words on a screen doesn't mean they can't hurt, so be nice and think before you type - it costs nothing to be nice :)

What someone should do is start a new thread and post their usage screenshots. Then maybe we can get to the bottom of this.

For a phone that is supposed to get up to 10 days of standby, do you really think 1 day is decent?

Based on what is on the phone and what it is used for...yes

it's perfectly fine....

I get. Good 6 hours + usage and between 1 day and 1day, 10 hours standby...which I'd good for me

R U kidding me?
No one on this thread has a battery charger outside ur home?
(even if you were a Forest Ranger on horseback all day, there are cheap mobile charging solutions).
Most of the peeps on this website seem to have chargers everywhere, so this argumemnt about battery life is ridiculous

Another apologist. Why is it ridiculous? Why should we have to charge it up from our horse? People are not buying electric cars beacuse of their range, they worry about being stranded, I suppose they could all carry generators round with them though, you know, full of petrol - that would be ironic!

If you should have to charge the battery during the day Apple should bundle it with a charging system (not just a USB lead and plug, you don't have a plug socket on your horse).

Right, an electric car is just like a phone  (that's a stupid statement my friend) -

When you leave your house in the am at 100%, and you can't make it to your car or office without it shutting off, then that's a problem.

Most peeps on THIS forum (and I mean most) have multiple chargers and they never worry about their phones becoming inoperable because the battery died. When the battery gets low, you don't have to panic, or make a bee line to the nearest Apple store, you simply just plug it in - simple :)

Agreed. I moved from the 4 to the 4S and the battery life is NOT as good. My 4 would have 50% or more left at the end of the day. My 4S sometimes needs a recharge by 7pm. I've tried all the usual steps to alleviate battery usage. I've just concluded that it's not as good on battery life. Disappointing. End of story.

Well for me it's not a concern really... I have my iphone connected to the dock while I'm in my office so everytime I go out the office, the phone us fully charged. Sometimes I don't have to charge it at night while I'm sleeping.

My 4s/ATT/16GB does not discharge OVN and I get exactly the same battery life as with my 3GS. Light browsing, email, no push on twitter or Facebook, audiobook listening, gps/google maps and such things. I get easily through a day.

I set it up as a new device, I do not use I cloud. MobileMe mail is push, brightness ~60%.

I think there is either a big software issue or even a hardware issue with a lot of the devices and I'm just lucky.

My battery life was pretty bad for the first couple of weeks. As this was my first smartphone, the drop in battery charge was even more shocking as my previous regular phone would last 4-6 days on a single charge.

I tried turning various options off one-by-one and finally got to a point where I would have about 50% battery left after 12 hours when I got home from work with light use. Yet when I looked at the usage, it would show 3 or 4 hours usage even though I had not spent more than 20 minutes using the phone.

Finally I just disabled Wifi and 3G full time for a week, only turning them on as needed. (I forgot to disable bluetooth). At this point my battery life improved a lot and sometimes I would come home with over 90% remaining and the best part was the usage numbers were much lower like 28 minutes usage when I had used it for 20.

When I re-enabled 3G and wifi at this point, the battery usage went up slightly but the usage stayed the same. Now I have almost all options turned on and I'm still at about 80-85% battery life after 12 hours and the usage numbers still tend to show about 5-10 minutes more than the amount that I actually used the phone.

There definitely is some kind of phantom process driving up the usage and eating the battery. I'd suggest trying what I did for a couple of days. Perhaps it'll help.

On the past few days I've set up an alarm on my alarm clock. Today without using the phone the battery drained 9% from 100. When I opened up the usage stats, I see the phone was "active" for 2 hours. Which just isn't true. I hadn't used the phone and reception is good.

Does anyone notice a difference between having an alarm set?

Hmmm. I use my iPhone as my alarm every weekday and I haven't had this issue. I couldn't tell you how much my phone drains percentagewise as I have turned off the % indicator for my sanity :) . I charge for approximately 2-3 hours when I get home from work...before charging, I would estimate that I am at 40-60%. I sleep with the iPhone (4s) on my nightstand and then usually charge it for another 30 minutes while I get ready for work. (I don't have close or easy access to a power outlet near the nightstand or I would charge overnight.)

FWIW I have brightness at about 40% I'd estimate, I don't have any Bluetooth items so that is off. I check email every 30 minutes, use Wifi more often than not and use Siri a couple of times a day as well as listen to music (through iMatch/Cloud) and do maybe 1-2 hours of web surfing. Plus perhaps 30 minutes of gaming or other such App-stuff.

My battery life was worse the first week, but is great now.

For a phone that is supposed to get up to 10 days of standby, do you really think 1 day is decent?

Well the thing is, if I was able to get almost 35 hours in standby with over 5 hours use, it might make sense that if you didn't touch it, and just left your iPhone in standby, it might get close to 10 days. That 10 day claim might also be without wifi on, etc. Did you check at how they rated that, and under what conditions. I wouldn't expect my iPhone to get 10 days standby anyway.

I think my battery life is decent however, giving it it's 2nd full charge today. Hoping it'll get better with calibration.

Also, how long is it supposed to take to fully charge the 4S?

My phone was completely dead this morning, and I plugged it in (around 10:30ish am, and it's now 12:15pm (less than 2 hours later), and it's already charged 93%. Is this just a trickle charge? Am I supposed to leave it a little longer even when it gets to the "plug symbol" on the battery indicator?

Is it possible that iCloud is backing up overnight, even when it's not plugged into a charger? Or perhaps syncing with iTunes?

A process like that uses the antenna (Wi-Fi or 3G) and the CPU. The 4S is dual-core, requiring more juice to power the CPU.

Does anyone know of any after market places that make higher capacity batteries for the iPhones? Ones that fit into the shell without any modifications that is?

I know the 4S comes with a 1432mAh battery, but HTC has made batteries smaller than iPhones that packs more power. I figure a battery of 18-1900mAh would be awesome for this phone.

1) start carrying around extra portable chargers
2) buy a battery pack case
3) trade your iphone 4S in for an iphone 4 (much, much better battery life)
