iLounge seems awfully sure Apple would NEVER use such obviously "wrong" proportions for the new nano. I disagree: people said the same about the current video iPod--they said the new big screen looked all wrong in proportion or something. It's not "wrong"--it's DIFFERENT, and change always comes in the end :)

I find a nano like the mockup to be believable. Wider yes, maybe even larger in volume, but shorter and worth it for the screen.

Re wireless synching... I don't care :) I have to plug my iPod in to charge anyway. When I do, synching is automatic. And takes seconds--much shorter than even a partial recharge. So wireless synching would to little to improve my life (and would in fact shorten battery life). It's a fine option is anyone wants it, but I don't.

I WOULD use it for data transfer. (Just like I liked how the old Shuffle could transfer files with no cable.)

As for the iPod lineup, seems like the Nano redesign will leave Apple with a pretty big market gap, given the awkward design. Who knows, maybe the shuffle will get a larger capacity or maybe the 2nd Gen Nano form factor will be kept as an entry model.

I agree that if the wider iPod happens, there'll be a gap for a thinner Nano. However, the 8GB Nanos are out of stock in every shop in Sydney (not sure about the others), and I think either they are being EOL'd entirely, or there's something else we haven't seen yet.

Somehow I think that the fatPod is a replacement for the 5G iPod, which would then be moved down cheaper, with flash. The iPod Touch would then be top of the line, priced more than the fatPod. I guess the nano would be replaced by a different, as-yet-unseen iPod. That's just my ramblings.
I guess they could keep the same screen size, and shorten the iPod Nano?

My prediction is that the shuffle will stay the same, an iPod with the Nano formfactor, possibly still called the Nano with a bump in capacity and that is it, the stubby iPod as a low end video ipod, 16 and 32GB capacities, and a high end iPod touch

well i hope it drives up my stock in apple before the even. when apple announced the imac, the stock dropped the day after. i dunno if it'll have wifi though. apple may want to keep it simple. plus, adding wiFi would cut apple's sales of the iphone considerably. many people who dont have at&t would just opt to get a new ipod and forget the iphone. the ipod may gain an FM tuner. i certainly hope it does. but wifi on an MP3 player doesnt make any sense. then it becomes something more than an ipod. i just dont see that happening unless it's just to download on the itunes store on the ipod directly. full internet browsing makes no sense at all.

I agree ... largely.
... Unless my iPod is going to live in a dock on top of my TV.
Then it would charge from the dock, and wirelessly sync to my iTunes.

And play video on my TV.

well i hope it drives up my stock in apple before
Read all our hopes on this board, and figure that investors are also reading our hopes - and you can guarantee that all our hopes will not be met.

So the price drives up before the event, and drops once everything is announced.

lol, I really hope Jobs doesn't say "our customers LOVE glossy screens, so the new iPod has a super-duper-reflective-glossy screen!". The current iPod screen isn't "glossy" but not matte either. I like it the way it is! Just make it bigger w/ touch and i'd probably buy it :)

I think that they'll try to pass off this new iPod touch thing as something different than the regular iPod and give it a higher price. I just don't think they'll sell this for 250-350 while selling the iPhone for 500-600. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if what is being called the new nano turns out to be the new "regular iPod", but these are just guesses based on pessimism. Can't wait though, would really like to finally get an MP3 player other than my 8125.

It boggles my mind why people insist that Apple will increase the price of the iPod. It doesn't make sense economically to increase the price because people will be less inclined to pay for something more expensive. Whel re have we seen an iPod increase in price (save for an increase in storage with the previous generations)? I believe there will still be the $249/$349 price point.

As for wifi, doesn't make sense. That's a smartphone feature. Sure, include it so we can buy music from the iTMS and possibly control other devices, but don't get us internet access, that would no make sense.

Anywho, I'm looking forward to this release, I've been looking forward to it for three months now.

When the iPod mini gave way to the iPod nano. originally, it was 4GB for $199, 6GB for $249. When the iPod nano came out, it was 2GB for $199, 4GB for $249.

If the form factor is cooler and there are better features, people are willing to pay for style/function.

when steve announced the iphone, he talked about revolutions, as in the "click -wheel" which gave birth to the ipod, and mulitouch which gave birth to the iphone, so if u make the ipod mulititouch, wouldn't it take away from the reason of it's success aka the click wheel?

am not saying i don't what a multi touch ipod, but i don't understand y apple would do it, if it first of all cannibalizes iphone sales , and second , the ipod is a music/video player, and the click wheel is actually easy to use, and lots of ppl, though may be illegal in some places use it in their cars, they can use without looking because of the click wheel, would be hard to do that on a mulitouch screen

anzy can't wait for the 5 th :D

I would have to agree, the multi-touch is a feature that will stay iphone only for a while. Apple would not want to undermine their iphone sales by inculding a large selling point on another (cheaper) product so quickly.

It would be nice if this event brought some hd itunes content, but i feel that it is going to be ipod only.

I'm in the camp that believes there will be an iPod with basically an iPhone touch screen display. The inclusion of OS X in the iPod basically requires more than the click wheel in order to use the various features the OS X based iPod could provide.

I also think that WiFi would be a great feature for selling the iPod. While a lot of people switched to ATT in order to get an iPhone there are stilla lot more than are stuck with their carrier for business reasons, or because ATT has poor service where they live.

There is also the factor of what Apple plans are for new features for the iPod/iPhone over the next two years, both in new software and in firmware upgrades. Keeping the two lines as close as possible lets them work on single platform development projects.

Regardless, it's going to be exciting to watch what Steve & Co come up with.

Apple TV like WiFi

The new iPod, if it does support WiFi, will likely do it Apple TV style. It will have trailers, YouTube, and perhaps connect to one's computer(s) to iTunes. No Safari or email will be provided.

If the iPod looks anything like the mock up, it's going to be fookin' sexy.

If the iPod Nano looks anything like the mock up, it's an abomination of design.

I'll toast to that...

I haven't really ever been disappointed with any of Apple's designs... but if the iPod Nano looks anything like the mockup, it will make up for all these years...

Omg Omg Omg!!!!!

I knew it!!!!! I just thought ok let there be the MAc Event. Maybe there might be a separate event for a ipod release!?!?!? And i was right!!!!!!

Now i can just sit back and wish

Hmmm I like the iphone/ipod mockup. I just like the capability of landscape and regular screen. Can you say more screen space!!!

THe idea of a built in wifi doesnt rock my boat. Seems awkward Butt he built in FM tuner that would be nice. I already got my current nano with the FM tuner. I like it but i hate the 3 miles of cords:mad:

A large capacity flash based ipod would be uber nice. But even smaller sizes would be ok. Just as long as the mockup design is sexy and the price is right. I really hated the price for the ipod photo $500 no thanks i would never do that again

Ill finally be able to update my ipod to something new and snazzy!!!! I love getting the new ipod and selling the old ones. Gets me so many goggly looks from onlookers :eek:

YAY and adding beatles would be the ultimate addition to the personal catalogs already available from the beatles band members. :D

I'm so tired of the cannibalization argument for not having a multi-touch iPod. You guys do realize that you can use the iPhone to make phone calls to other people, right? It's actually more than just a touch-screen music player.

Priced correctly, the products won't clash because of the scaling of features. The multi-touch cannibalization argument is like saying people won't buy the more expensive MacPro because they can get the same keyboard (interface as in multi-touch) on the cheaper iMac.

What, you mean premium products can share some of the same features as entry-level products, but they still do more? Hmmm, I might actually pay more for the premium product with more features and performance, even-though it does share some of those features with a less capable product.

Nah, I don't want to pay more for a Ferrari. I can get a Chevy with four wheels too.

THE IMPORTANT THING:

iPods with full Mac OS X inside. No limitation. In other words, a true handheld computer. Now, image the ultimate presentation remote for Keynote and PowerPoint. We need tons.

it might be telling that the album cover comes right after the Beastie Boys to the left (as someone posted above)...but why is Keane just a few more to the left? what's the sorting preference there?

i certainly hope a widescreen ipod does surface...i've been ipod-less for a year now since i sold all my ipods in anticipation of the widescreen ipod last year!! we all know how that turned out...though i was planning on an iphone in january i really want a high capacity widescreen ipod right away. multitouch would be even better!

I would be playing with it all the time and forget about my presentation... and by 'it' i mean the ipod.

it wont have wi-fi...if it did it would only be to broswe the iTunes store but it will definately have bluetooth.....i am 95% sure it will have bluetooth. i don't see why people want wireless headphones, to me thats just stupid. Bluetooth will be used to share your iPod library with other iPod's and also be able to browse other iPod's music. Lets say if two people went for a run and one person didn't want to listen to his/her music so the other guy just shared his music with the other person whilst running. bluetooth will definately happen!!! probably not for syncing though.

Could this be??

Perhaps the new iPod will use Kleer http://www.kleer.com/ instead of Bluetooth for wireless headphones.

Why it could be:
1. Their US office is in Cupertino. (this is where Apple is)
2. Apple has said Bluetooth means both the iPod and headphones would have to be recharged regularly
3. Kleer gives 10x the battery life of Bluetooth.
4. Kleer has been suspiciously quiet with press releases this year.
5. Kleer is lossless transmission.
6. The only other device with it is http://www.rcajetstream.com/
And look when it ships! (September)
7. Thompson/RCA no longer has exclusive rights to it. (they had until Q3 2007)
