I think the 6G will have widescreen, touch based new interface, larger HDD, usable calendar/address book. Remember it's nearly 2 years since the 5G.

WiFi, BT, probably not.

FM Radio, not a hope - Does SJ even know what that is?

If they do a touchscreen version, a way to search like in iTunes would be great. I never use my iPod when my Mac is close because it's a real PITA to find a specific song witht the clickwheel. They even crippled the iPhone and removed the search for tunes completely :(

I hope this is it! The actual full screen iPod we've been wanting...

But,

I hope it doesn't go down the iPod Photo route... Everyone wanted a colour screen, and we got it! On the top of the line, £100 more, expensive one... That just made the mono pods look, well, old tech...

Make the full screen one across the whole double digit GB iPod line please Apple, not just another on top of what we have.

My 40GB 3rd Gen is sitting in his little clip case (Remember when they came with all the accessories!) looking nervous that he's about to be replaced....
;)

wifi ipods would be great... if not for an included safari browser, then for an ipod compatible iTunes store... and and FM tuner would be just great, but it would be even more amazing to be able to listen to live streaming net radio via wifi?!

Like many people, I'm not too fond of the iPod nano mockups.

You got that right. We have so many folks here drooling for a portable TV, while those of us who want a small music player seem to be pushed to the wayside. I'm hoping that short squat thing is the new ipod, not the nano. (of course, this depends on how well the current nano is selling). If it is a new ipod, then the touch screen thinggie would be a 4th addition to the line, and fine for those video junkies...

This stubby Nano is absolutely disgusting looking in the mock ups, but in real life it probably looks much better, but i'm not convinced this is the update for the Nano as much as it is for the iPod Video... I can see Apple breaking up their product line again like they did with the Photo iPods, creating a new flagship (Touch-based) and this to be what the current video is... Then the Nano may have some other style updates or merely capacity bumps. The Nano has built popularity for being tiny, this would destroy all of that and the exercise workout niche they built with the Nike hookup.

One would enable iPods to act as a remote and control playlists by queuing a song from the iTunes data file, instead of streaming the file. The other method is using AirTunes, by streaming the MP3 files.

If true, I hope this means a visible resurgence in Airtunes, including a new 802.11n Airport Express w/ Airtunes. I'd love to go over to the "n" side but I'm to reliant on Airtunes. I had thought Apple all but abandoned Airtunes. The mention of it in a rumor report is nice. Hope it becomes reality.

Perhaps the new iPod will use Kleer instead of Bluetooth for wireless headphones.

Why it could be:
1. They moved to Cupertino. (this is where Apple is)
2. Apple has said Bluetooth means both the iPod and headphones would have to be recharged regularly
3. Kleer gives 10x the battery life of Bluetooth.
4. Kleer has been suspiciously quiet with press releases this year.
5. Kleer is lossless transmission.
6. The only other device with it is http://www.rcajetstream.com/
And look when it ships!
I soooo want that. Integrate that with an all-in-one iPod-Nike system and I'll pay good money for that.

Speculative Algebra ;

A - Coverflow = OSX

B - OSX = Touchscreen + Widescreen + Wi-fi

C - $399 Touchscreen OSX Ipod with Safari over Wi-FI

If A+B=C then I and everyone I know has just ordered a new Ipod...

Here is my credit card. When will it arrive, dammit!!

I could be tempted by an iPod that had FM and recording ability. The Beatles, of course, is very welcome news. I think I could buy a "Yellow Submarine" iPod. It would be fun.

Has there any been any discussion on a wireless headset / earphones?

That would be the biggest improvement for anyone using them while being active.
That wire is a pain in the A.:(

Loving the look and idea of the mockup Touch iPod. I'd get one, so long as the price doesn't go silly (I quite like the £200ish of the current model, much more wouldn't be worth it just yet as my 3G works just fine)

Can't see why everyone obsesses over Wifi, it's slow and how difficult is it to put the iPod in its stand anyway? (you need to do so anyway to charge it?)

Don't like the new Nano mockup. Fugly fugly fugly. If I wanted one, I'd buy the old model - the whole idea IMO is that it's sleek and tiny, not this fat thing!

Wireless headsets sound dreadful. Apple would be bringing themselves to a new low to expect you to listen to music through a wireless headset.

RE: That mockup a few posts back, it's a fake. I can absolutely guarantee you that, for a reason.

If you look closeley at that picture

That invitation album art sits between keane and mika. whoever said madonna is probably right

...what if the ipod nano dimensions are right but instead of a click wheel, it's got a touch screen. i don't think apple would keep a 'degraded' UI.

Beatles- I want this sooo bad-i'm a huge beatles fan, but i have to buy it at borders-and they don't have the greatest selection.

It sits between Beastie Boys and Mika. By that logic, it could be Beatles. But then again: the albums are not in alphabetical order in the invitation.

Oh how I wish Apple would allow for WiFi Airtunes over the iPod and iPhone. Give me that feature and I'll be one happy camper.

Bluetoot headphones for iPod and iPhone

I bet anyone a donut that on Tuesday they release bluetooth stereo headphones for iPod and iPhone.

It would have been cleverer if:

the album on the left was by "The The" (a real band but a little hard to google due to thier name)

the album in the middle was the "The Beat goes on" picture

and then the album on the right was by Eels

;)

So where are all the "widescreen IPOD is an IPhone posters. . ."

of the last month or so who bought an IPhone (I am guessing) and then mocked the idea that Apple would release a touchscreen IPod within a few months (as many on the boards predicted)? They generally said, "Apple already has a touch/wide screen IPod. . .it is called the IPhone". Ha.

Now that it is all but obvious this will happen next week. . .will be interesting to hear their thoughts. Many of the same folks dismissed the idea that a new IPhone will be avail by Christmas because "Apple doesn't want to offend early adopters" (meaning them). Wrong. Apple wants to sell stuff. . .look for a new (higher capacity IPhone by Christmas).

Bring on the touch/wide screen IPods!!

in other news, why would apple care about stealing iphone sales?

they will probably make more profit per ipod (cheaper and less components) than they will for the iphone?

they may make more on the device itself but they share minthly fees, which while we don't know the full ammount probably add up to at least the price of the phone over the two years, so for every iPod bought instead of an iPhone Apple loses several hundred in profit that would have come from the iPhone

My predictions / desires

The fugly new nano is in fact the revved iPod with video now sporting an OSX variant with coverflow etc... This allows a full size iPod with plenty of hard disk space up to 120GB.

The Ipod Touch will be flash based and priced at a premium (guess $499 for 32GB, $399 for 16) so as not to cannibalize iPhone sales unnecessarily

iTunes 8 will be announced which will feature 720p content for the first time. At the Cupertino special event, Apple answered in reply to a question about Apple TV that an announcement was coming soon. I suspect that Apple TV sales have been slower than anticipated and that HD content is thought to be needed to make the device more compelling

My $0.02.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Many on these boards who think they know what will be released based on conventional wisdom are often left with a big WTF?.
