Also, I like those rumors about the tablet mac. Either the new iPod has tablet mac like features.. or they're releasing a new iPod as well as a tablet mac.

hmm.

I don't know if people have seen this, and i don't know if it reliable, but because this is a rumors site, I thought I'd post it up.

Apple expected to unveil new iPod lineup
Daniel Shen, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Monday 3 September 2007]
Apple is expected to unveil its next-generation iPod lineup, including an iPod video with a touch-control interface, at a press conference on September 5, according to sources at Taiwan-based contract manufacturers.

The new iPod video will also come with a wide-screen panel, high storage capacity and Wi-Fi connectivity, the sources indicated. In addition, the new iPod video is expected to be powered by NAND flash, instead of a hard disk drive (HDD).

Apple is outsourcing the production of the new iPod video to Taiwan-based Inventec Appliances, which is expected to start volume shipments by the end of this month or in early October, the sources noted.

Apple's new products will also include a new iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle, to cash in on the upcoming Christmas season, stated the sources, who also noted that sales of the new iPod series is expected to total 22-23 million units in the fourth quarter of this year.

In addition to Inventec Appliances, other Taiwan-based makers, including Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Asustek Computer, will also benefit from the launch of the new iPod product range, the sources asserted.

Contract makers for new iPod lineup

Item: iPod video
Features of the new product: Widescreen, an operating interface similar to the iPhone, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity
Contract maker: Inventec Appliances (The current iPod video is manufactured by Quanta Computer)

Item: iPod Nano
Features of the new product: Increased storage capacity, iPhone-like interface, price to remain unchanged
Contract maker: Foxconn

Item: iPod Shuffle
Features of the new product: Increased storage capacity, price to remain unchanged
Contract Maker:Asustek

SO, the manufacturers make this rumor appear more legit'. Nothing suprusing about the top ipod, but the nano is supposed to have a touch screen, and we still don't know about the stubby.

On Pricing, it says the lower models are to keep their price, but nothing about the top model, which will probably cost more. While Apple could try to sell mostly Nanos and fewer but expensive top-level ipods (hence the touch screen for the Nano) to reach their 22 million ipod sales goal in the fourth quarter, one would expect them to try and keep their flagship (i.e. top model) a strong seller.

How can it have high storage capacity and use flash instead of a HDD? Article contradicts itself.

Yeah, so I think "Don Bagles" is full of it.
I think he just decided to pretend he knew what was going on...

The one thing that has been forgotten and I've been told that ViiPod (not touch - pronounced Vee Pod) has a video camera for instant upload to .mac, facebook, youTube etc...... its the missing connection that everyone has forgotten..... youTube etc. is the Napster of this generation and is being supported... also after revamp of iMovie to a simpler interface will be included o the ViiPod....... this is how the differentiate the iPod from the iPhone..... actual video and editing..... (you can see how easy it woulld be to edit and add sountrack by using multi-touch)..... the nano is for girls and has a much simpler cut down interface..... which is understandable.... some people just want to play video and listen to music... not create it....

He doesn't know and is enjoying the attention... if you know then tells us everything like I have... if you know and can't say then don't say anything and if you don't know speculate like everyone else..... the problem on this forum is we are all feeding him.......... there is no point going down the path of dribs and drabs.......

make this rumor appear more legit'.
Damn, that would make my guess wrong!

Actually, it said the nano would share the iphone interface - but that could just mean coverflow. It doesn't need to be touch screen.

I assume that this rumour meant that the new Nano was the stubby (as per other rumours).

That comes back to my guess :) Nano same price, Stubby same price as iPod, and new iPod widescreen more expensive. But I've been wrong.

Thanks for the link.

There's a parts shortage because all the parts are being bought by Apple to make a multi-touch tabletMac due to be announced on the first Tuesday in September.

That person on the ars forum.... ummm if he is correct i will be stunned. It will make my year... It was written on July 19th.... Oh my goodness. Does he have a flux capacitor or something... Someone needs to track this guy down and ask him if he knows any more... heres no way that it could have been a guess.

A tablet didnt even cross my mind unitl 2 minutes ago when a started reading this page of the thread...

theres no way that it could have been a guess.

Exactly my thinking. Guessing within a 24 hours margin of error the actual September event back in July is an amazing enough prediction in itself, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed he's on the mark with the actual product too.

We'll find out soon enough though!

An iPod Macro, ha! Why assume iPods will go smaller or stay small with touch screens, why not bigger? A 13" iPod with touchscreen and flash drive = TabletMac™ running OSX. ;)

But the event's on Wednesday. He's already wrong! :D:p

Hes one day out... That precise enough... Normally rumors give timescales of quarters, not even precise months... Being one day out is very close....

If he had a time machine he would have said Wednesday, and he didnt, so that rules out time travel. Being one day out two months before is something to be proud of.:D Maybe he meant wednesday but actually wrote tuesday.? Or maybe he was just confused.

Oh yeh and i like this nano mockup.. its soo small... Looks brilliant

Aww poor Don, what's he going to do all day now?

I was thinking how HUGE of a difference that extra half inch would make.

People keep emailing me to tell me exactly the same thing :)

That newer "leaked" photo of the fatpod looked very believable, and much less ugly than the earlier one, though I'd still prefer to see it as an iPod Mini than a Nano.

However the latest article sounds like an excellent source (the manufacturers), and seems to contradict its existence. I wasn't expecting to see a touch nano.... if that was Jobs' "one last thing" that he had up his sleeve then I bet he's pissed :D

How big is a single NAND flash ? 32 GB ? Is it possible to use a combination of 3-4 of them. To get 100GB + of storage?

No worries, I was just messing. :)

I think that most events have been on Tuesday in the past anyway (hence the "Powerbook G5s next tuesday!" joke. I though it was odd to have it on wednesday, but ah well. :)

I suppose the tablet rumour had to pop up again at some point. The only thing we know the guy guessed correctly was that Apple would launch a new or revised product first week in September.

I think a tablet mac is even less likely than FM radio on the iPod.

ps I should mention that Apple are shrewd at Internet marketing and build-up.... a lot of the mock-ups you see actually come from them to build interest......... the iPhone was a classic example of this……..

Hey folks, if you bothered to even read any of the links I linked to in my previous post (which at least one of you happened to have quoted) then you'd know by now that time-outs and other mod actions are private matters between those involved and the mods.

A high-capacity iPod with full-on flash memory seems something of a contradiction in terms. Isn't there a major flash shortage at the moment, thanks to Apple buying up most of it? Maybe they are planning to make the thing all-flash, but for high-capacity storage a hard drive is still clearly the less expensive option.

A hybrid unit strikes me as far more likely, with main storage on HDD and a flash buffer to preserve battery life. But who knows, right?

Since :apple: has let us down so much this year, I'm hoping for a full blown pocket computer iPod!

I know its not gonna happen, but it would make up for their "welcome to 2007" campaign where all they have introduced is a phone and a new form factor for the iMac

i dont care about a tablet as much as a 4" iPod, touchscreen with wifi.

and i think the moderator's post was off-topic

Would it be possible for an ipod to use multiple flash drives. If you think about it flash memory is small so couldn't they make multiple drives work together to allow more memory at a cheaper price? Just a thought.

"cheaper"? flash drive is expensive as it is - who could afford multiple drives?
