-Ability to combine capacities /stream nearby iPods.
-Wireless headhones
-"Smarter" shuffle
-Crossfade playback
-eBook reader (widespread school use=ubiquitous presence, industry control)
-Touchscreen controls (that is no rim-based gestures like the patent)
-Use of ambient recording patent
-iTunes community tracking play counts, recommendations
Oh, and the home button will provide a contrasting iconic look (instead of the iPhone's square).
In conclusion, a squarish 4" screen form factor (reduced top and bottom margins) and $400-500 price tag is what makes Apple so sure about not stealing the iPhone's thunder. It makes no sense to release a product so similar to the iPhone to replace a cultural icon and confusing the rest of the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, this new iPod is coming. Its early RTM commotion is probably what caused our favorite analyst, Shaw Wu to lose his job by assuming it was the iPhone Nano.
