I am going to have to disagree with you on Apple selling a nano and a mini because they are too close to differentiate. Without the hard drive the mini can be just as small as the nano so what would Apple do with the extra "wasted" space? I think the nano will get video support while keeping the click-wheel, the size of the nano will stay the same, but the screen will get bigger so you will have to turn the nano sideways to watch video.

the current nano need to compete with all the other MP3 players that are cheaper smaller but includes a screen...

The new mini will keep the form factor of the 5.5 gen iPod because lots of people would like to have bigger screen than the current nanos without having to buy the top of the line ipods....

people don't buy ipod based on the internal components but with external form factors and functionnalities... the new nano is the new mini...

... As for the iPod lineup, seems like the Nano redesign will leave Apple with a pretty big market gap, given the awkward design. Who knows, maybe the shuffle will get a larger capacity or maybe the 2nd Gen Nano form factor will be kept as an entry model. After all, the added width is the main reason why there are many fatPod design dissenters....
I'm glad I am not the only one thinking about this.

If the "fatPod" is real, there will most certainly be a big hole in one of the key iPod market segments unless they keep the old nano form factor in some way shape or form. I keep pondering this and have yet to come up with a good reason why Apple would screw over so many people and actually throw away sales in that way.

It's possible that the fatPod is just an elaborate joke I suppose, but I still have my fingers crossed for the (increasingly not believed in by anyone but me) nanoPhone! :D

you are not alone

Okay, I am the only one who is not excited but the Beatles addition to iTunes then. Sorry I poured cold water on you guys' enthusiam...

:D
Just so you are not out there all by yourself...

English person here that grew up on the Beatles, owned every album many times (even the original pressings from the UK), my older sister was even one of those screaming chicks at their concerts you see in the old footage of them and....

I am so sick and tired of hearing about this subject.

Seriously. :)

PS - also agree with those that are pointing out it would be a total slap in the face to the Beatles and all their fans, to announce their arrival on iTunes with an old Sonny and Cher song anyway.

Could this KLEER technology be made to work with headsets for cell phones that dont make you look like a borg?

I have vowed not to use a wireless headset until I can get one Jack Bauer style - so small no one can see it in your ear.

Just my thoughts on the jfmartin predictions:

No FM radio - its old technology. If any OTA audio is added it will be Sat, but i doubt that would happem, due to existing hardware contracts.

The 'mini' you describe will be the iPod 'stumpy' which has been doing the rounds. If you implied this, and I missed it, you have my apologies.

There will be an upgrade to the Apple TV, incorperating the itunes store and bluetooth to allow the use of the new, small form factor wireless KB. We may even see an act of benevolence on Apple's part and see them enable the USB port on the existing units to allow the use of a bluetooth dongle via a firmware update.

Hi,
One more thing

[*]All current 5 gen iPod owner will be able to perform an OS upgrade (not clear if iPod OS 2.0 ou OS X without touch interface)
[*]iTunes 7.5 (or 8.0)
[/LIST]
Thank you all for coming.

A weel informed guy.

If Apple updates the 5 gen software, that will be a first of epic proportions. Upgrade a fundamental shift in software on 2 year old hardware that likely cannot handle what the new iPod OS will/can/might offer? Doubtful.

I have a 3rd gen iPod without any software updates after the 4th gen came out. Some items, like adding "shuffle all" to the main menu could have easily been done but wasn't. I also have a PowerBook physically capable of two finger scrolling, but Apple has and will never release a firmware update for it. I have to use third party software.

Apple wants to sell current iPod owners new iPods. Having a customer base of the iPod does nothing for their bottom line if they don't buy anything else from Apple.

Apple has stated that the iPhone and AppleTV will be different than other products and have more software updates. It remains to be seen if they will do this on a large scale, or continue small updates like adding YouTube video. I don't see any update for previous iPod owners this time around

iPod TV, a step backwards?

... we have so many folks here drooling for a portable TV, while those of us who want a small music player seem to be pushed to the wayside. I'm hoping that short squat thing is the new ipod, not the nano. ...
Agreed.

I found this mock up of the new fatPod with an optional antennae and feet. Remind you of anything? :)

Edit: This would actually be a very nice idea for a accessory case for the fatPod. A little TV that you can set on your desktop that the fatPod fits into. :)

If the Beatles are coming to iTunes, I would expect to see Mr. McCartney and Ringo at the event. So let's see.

Beatles

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but i'm sure looking at the invite itself, you can pretty much confirm that there will be the news of the addition of the beatles to the iTunes store. Look at the invite (which is an image in coverflow) to the left, the album in the beastie boys, what comes next in alphabitical order, the beetles....

Nice theory! Good catch. I hope The Beatles do come to iTMS next week! Dig A Pony!

No Wi-Fi - but it will have Bluetooth Streaming Audio

The new thing in car audio is SYNC. It will be first in Ford's then others. It supports bluetooth streaming audio from MP3 players. Since no players have it now, you can bet it will be in the new iPods. (and the new Zune, since SYNC is written by MS). More details here: http://www.syncmyride.com/#/overlay/overlay_music_player.

Bluetooth streaming audio will take less power than Wi-Fi and would also be an easy-add to iTunes for home use as well.

You heard it here first.

iPod Touch screen won't canablize iPhone sales..

Just like the full size iPod isn't going to canabalize nano sales.

In my opinion, the nano is a horrible deal. You pay anywhere from $31 to $74 dollars per gigabyte whereas the full size iPod is $4 to $8 a gigabyte. In that light, why would anyone buy a Nano?

Because everyone has their own needs and while storage space is MY priority, someone else's may be a smaller physical size/weight. Or flash based storage. Or cost.

For me, I like the thought of a touchscreen iPod with the ability to surf the net. At the same time, I don't need half of the stuff they put in the iPhone. And I need a lot more space than the iPhone has. So, hopefully, I compromise a market that Apple will target - high capacity iPods with Safari and wifi.

And wifi doesn't make the iPhone. It's the ability to surf the net from ANYWHERE, not just wifi hot spots. Sure, it may be slow, but when you need to look something up, you can. Regardless of where you are. This is something a wifi iPod would not allow.

Needless to say, I'm anxiously awaiting September 5th (with credit card in hand).

Apple has stated that the iPhone and AppleTV will be different than other products and have more software updates.

Really? Is there a quote or news somewhere that proves this?
I really hope if the new iPod does have any WiFi features that the iPhone doesn't, the iPhone will have a software update the same day.
I really can't see Apple launching an iPhone in Europe weeks or even months after the iPod Touch has been released worldwide.
Personally, I think Thomas2006's scenario is most likely:
WiFi for the iPod touch but no iPhone-WiFi features (= no Safari, no Mail, no Google Map, no Widgets - the only thing i could maybe imagine would be YouTube but probably not even that) but something completly different (as stated above: :apple:TV and iTunes remote, wireless syncing etc) that will also be added to the iPhone

oh no ... :( I just got a nano 4g with my student promo 2 days ago ... i can't believe there is an upgrade in next 8 days ... is there any chance for upgrade?

I thought they're going to introduce the new iPods after Sep 16th

Plenty of this information floating around on MR, but the new iPods will almost certainly be excluded from the promotion, regardless of when it expires. They typically use the promos to clear inventory, so I'd be surprised to see a change in this instance.

New ipods... exciting, but I already have an 80 gb ipod. Hard to justify spending $350 on a new ipod. A smaller ipod with cool apple design goodness, maybe... I watch a lot of podcasts, both video and audio. A teeny thing for under $200, might be interesting.

The Beatles, I have been waiting for a long long time. I'll easily drop a "C note" in the store the day the Beatles show up.

Apple have been using the Beatles in their marketing and keynotes since forever. The invite doesnt confirm anything in this respect.

New iPod Line

The new iPod line will be like this.

ipod Shuffle (2 GB)

iPod (8 and 16 GB) the new nano

iPod Touch (HDD 80 and 160, Phoneless iPhone)

IPod Phone (iPhone 8 and 16 gb)

iPod TV (apple TV, new software features)

The will kill the nano the same way the mini died.

That's my guess

Yeah! And before that is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by the Flaming Lips, which...wait a minute.

I think that we will see ipod touch, newly designed ipod nanos, and a fresh iphone software update with new applications to fill the bottom row, as well as an itunes update. I am crossing my fingers that the iphone will be released internationally (as a Canadian), but I am fine with an internet-capable touchscreen ipod :)

here's how its gonna be

Look here's my take on the whole situation. Apple has put all of this time and money into developing all of this new technology that’s been incorporated into their crowning media achievement, the iphone. With a price tag of $600 it would be foolish to incorporate these same technologies in something that costs $350. I guarantee that the ipods will be the same as the previous generation with maybe the addition of cover-flow and a touch screen. and of course a new look, THATS IT. No Wi-fi access or browser, no Bluetooth capabilities, probably not even an FM radio thingy, It just wouldn’t make any sense. The vast majority of iphone purchasers already had cell phones before they bought this $600 piece of equipment, They would be competing too much with their own product if they bundled all of these things into the ipod. Come on people don’t be stupid!!

But..

Apple have been using the Beatles in their marketing and keynotes since forever. The invite doesnt confirm anything in this respect.

They've been adding in each Beatle's catalog over the last couple of months and have patched up the whole Apple vs Apple Computer dispute. It seems the time is ripe for the Beatles to arrive.

To me, it's not a huge deal but from a business perspective, especially with Apple the record label vs Apple the computer company, it's a huge deal.
