Video game Halo 3 earned more than £84m ($170m) in sales in its first 24 hours on release, according to Microsoft.

The game sets the record for the most money earned in a day by an entertainment product, topping figures set by film Spiderman 3.

Sales figures from European launches have yet to be added into the total.

More than 1.4 million people have gone online to play the title since its launch and more than four million online games of Halo 3 were logged in the last 24 hours.

That's some mighty impressive numbers.

EDIT: I have just finished reading the EDGE review and it's only the sixth game to get the coveted Ten. (It looks like I'll be buying a Xbox 360 plus a copy of Halo 3 next summer!)

EDGE™ should be slapped for that one.

Seems to me this is a game for HALO fans. It's not a game to convert those that weren't that impressed by the other two games.

I've played about an hour and I'm bored sh**less of it already.

Looks like it's going to join Gears of War on my shelf of the TOP 360 games - that just don't do it for me.

Oh well.

It took you an hour?

As soon as Cortana said the word "Lucky" I switched off. I knew it was going to be tripe. A little co-op mess around then on with the missions and yea. snorefest.

My brother was the same as me and told me it doesn't get any better

Fan service through and through.

Well, until Bungie releases the Mac version of Halo 3, that is. Next summer, maybe? I'm only guessing.

I doubt anywhere in the next 5 years. It took them what, three years to port halo 2 from the XBox to Windows? I guess some of that came because they wanted to wait for Vista. We haven't even heard if Halo 2 is coming to the Mac, I doubt it will.

To continue the discussion: I am almost done Halo 3 campaign, and as some others have said, the story gets much better after the first 3 levels. After that, it starts to feel like a "Halo" game again; big open levels, get to use vehicles and large weapons, less linear in design, etc. Anyone who stopped in the first hour should try to push through to get through to the 4th level. Maybe everyone on here who stopped playing early should play a co-op campaign game together, that really does make it a lot of fun.

So sad, considering Bungie used to be a Mac-only developer...one of my (former) favorite ones, at that. Even if they ported it, I bet it would be the PC version with the Cider wrapper (or whatever that's called), anyway.

If you pay $60 and up for a game and finish it within 2 days, thats not money well spent. I would be rather ticked.

That depends if you bought H3 for the campaign or for Live. Multiplayer makes it a good buy. Campaign mode is an add on. I never played any of the campaigns in the old ones, but since this one has co-op campaign, it's not bad playin' with friends.

Thanks for letting me know its gets better after third level. I was begininng to wonder. :)

Will try and have another whack at it 2moro after work & the gym

Halo 3 + Xbox 360 = RLOD

1. I open the tray of my newly repaired Xbox 360
2. Insert Halo 3
3. See load screen, then hear that familiar sound......
4. Press Start Solo Match
5. Frozen Screen, RLOD
6. Neighbors hear me scream and call 911....

Why, Microsoft..., why?!?!

Maybe they should stick to software...

Halo 3 is running at.....640p? lol doesn't really matter but they are rendering it low then upscaling to keep the HDR running smoothly.

Bungies response is priceless and on the mark though.

"In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it's practically impossible to discern the difference. We would ignore it entirely were it not for the Internet's propensity for drama where none exists. In fact the reason we haven't mentioned this before in weekly updates, is the simple fact that it would have distracted conversation away from more important aspects of the game, and given tinfoil hats some new gristle to chew on as they catalogued their toenail clippings."

It's BS. I noticed that Halo 3 does not look anywhere near as good as the GRAW games or Resistance on the PS3. I wondered about it as soon as I fired it up.

And they messed up things like the water as well.

That's not to say that games that run at under 720p need look bad. Perfect Dark Zero does, but its cartoon style graphics don't really suffer from it.

I played it this week end, at first I wasn't impressed.

But then I played it more today, and I got home, I'm wanting to play it badly!

So I'm getting a 360 tomorrow or sometime this week..for it, Gears of War and some upcoming games

Any Mac gamer from the 90s worth his salt will think of Marathon with Bungie, not Halo ;).

I still don't think Bungie has surpassed Marathon with the Halo series.

While it may not come to Mac anytime soon I don't think it will take much longer to come to PC, maybe a year or so. Remember, Gears of War was released a year back for 360 and its close to being released for PC. Microsoft is taking their Games For Windows program more serious and unifying it more with their Xbox360 platform, for better and for worse.
