Hey Pandora...Damn I got kind of excited when I thought you mentioned they'd be sold at Rogers and all the companies...

I'm probably gonna feel really silly when I read your answer but what the heck is a SO?

"Significant other." It's how I refer to my common-law husband on the internets. :)

Hey, I got a question regarding Fido.

A couple weeks ago I went to a fido rep and asked if they have any info about upgrade policies. He said no.

Any ways I asked if I was eligible (original iPhone 3G on launch day) for an upgrade and he said yes in a couple weeks.
But I am currently on a voice plan that costs 17.50, and he mentioned that if it is anything like last year I would have to be on a 25 dollar voice plan to be eligible for the iPhone @ 199. Does any one know if this is true? And if it IS true, would I be able to just add a feature (say caller ID, or a txt message bundle) to make up the cost and get it?

I would call- but it is currently 5:40 am and won't have a chance to call/go in until later in the week.:D

I'm wondering if Telus is going to give me an offer for me to get an iPhone 4...
I have a 3GS right now which I paid 199$ for when I signed up for a 3 year contract in December.
Thing is I don't have a regular contract. Since I work at Futureshop, I paid 55$ a month for 500 min/3GB/Text/nights/etc. Bell and Rogers have similar offers for us but nothing amazing.
Thing is the iPhone is (from what I heard) going to coast 699$ unlocked at the Apple Store. I have a colleague who's willing to buy my 3GS for 300$, meaning I would pay 400$ for the iPhone 4. However, If I cancelled my contract (which I'm assuming would coast me around 300$) and got the iPhone with another company (I'm assuming 199$), it would cost me 500$(minus the 300 for my 3GS) instead of 700$ for the IP4.
Do you guys think Telus will make me an offer ?

I have been running this scenario in my head ever since they announced it. It's pointless but it numbs the pain of not having an iPhone 4 lol. Where the hell is it already? I want my iPhone 4 NOW!

We'll have to wait and see what kind of upgrade options Telus or Bell could introduce. They've had the current iPhone since November, so anyone who purchased one is definitely not even at one year since last upgrade.

If you have a 3GS in good condition, you could most likely sell it for $400+ right now. the iPhone 4 will probably be 649 & 749 from apple.ca, so it won't be too big of a difference if you can't do an upgrade through Telus.

In the past for Rogers/Fido you needed to be on a voice+data plan of 45 or more (plus saf). I think now for any of the carriers to get full subsidy it has to be 50 or more for voice + data (not including addons).

Hey Profets! How's life?

What is the deal with having to have a bill of $100 or over to get a full subsidized price?

I'm getting a factory unlocked iPhone 4, before the official release date. Think Rogers will sell me a microsim to be compatible with it? (I have a 3GS with a Rogers Sim.)

Hopefully I don't have to wait till launch just to be able to use it..

Well I'm not sure if Rogers has microsims in stock yet....but you could always easily just cut the sim into a micro and from what I've heard it will work fine.

It's super easy to cut, I tried it myself and it worked perfectly, I used a sharp exacto blade and the thing practically cut itself.

Hi All

Sorry if this has been asked before, but am planning on coming over to Toronto on holiday, and was wondering if there'd been a release date yet as to the iPhone 4 there. (Or will Rogers have MicroSims within July to get a Pay as You Go on an iPhone4 if I bought one from the Apple Store while there on Holiday?)

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Nothing yet. I wouldn't expect it until the end of July really, perhaps even later. But that's the pessimist in me.
Though apparently, Steve Job's claims that everything in on schedule, so perhaps sometime in July.

According to this, the "July" countries, will be seeing the iPhone 4 release on July 23.

Apple's wider international launch of the iPhone 4 has been penned in for July 23, according to an Electronista tipster. A source at a major Canadian carrier has the launch marked for that Friday, which would be consistent with the talk of a later July release date for the extra 18 countries involved.

As Rogers is supporting the iPad you can most likely get a micro sim easily from a Rogers store to use on the iPhone 4 (whenever it comes out)

I hope they start pre-orders soon because I'll be away in Europe from the 12th to the 27th. I'd love to pre-order before I go, but I kinda have a feeling that pre-orders won't be until a week before the on sale date.

You *may* be able to pre-order if you are not in Canada.... Unless the carriers put in any blocks on their site if you aren't in Canada.

*cross your fingers!*

Question regarding unlocked iphone 4

Since providers here will be selling the phones unlocked, does that mean, If i upgrade to a 199$ iphone 4, the phone is unlocked even though i choose a contract? or is it unlocked for just for month to month with full buy out of iphone 4

The phone is LOCKED if you buy it from a carrier regardless of the price you pay.
The phone is UNLOCKED ONLY if you buy it from an Apple Retail Store

Examples with guestimated prices
1) You pay $199 and get it from Rogers/Bell/Telus with a plan... LOCKED
2) You pay $699 and get it from Rogers/Bell/Telus without a plan... LOCKED
3) You pay $699 and get it from an Apple Retail Store... UNLOCKED

Prices are estimates but you get the idea... the phone remains LOCKED to the network you got it from until you jailbreak and unlock it. UNLOCKED phones remain unlocked and will not be locked by the network you choose to get service from.

Additional notes.... There has been no confirmation of Apple selling the phone for the discounted $199 price in store. It has so far been the full price and UNLOCKED. To get the discounts you have to go to your carrier or a store like Best Buy that sells the phone on their behalf with the discount, but it will still be locked to the carrier you choose to get service from. There might be updates in the future but as it stands now, if you want it unlocked you are going to have to pay up full price and get it at Apple only. If you want it cheap you have to get it from the carrier and it is locked. No carrier is selling the phone unlocked, regardless of what price you buy it for.

Thanks
for that Draz

I was under the assumption that you would be able to buy it unlocked regardless if your a contract or not and can switch carriers freely if one chooses having the unlocked phone.

All this talk about unlocked iphone in canada made me think it could be that simple oh well ,... one can dream lol.

It's ok... many people think that way. But unlike other countries where they are use to unlocked phones Canada isn't used to this type of thing.

I suppose if this catches on maybe we can see more of this. Google tried it with Nexus One but didn't get far. Apple will do a lot better. But if this trend continues where we can buy unlocked phones and use them on more than one provider that would be awesome.

Did Rogers allow pre-ordering last year? I skipped the 3GS so I have no idea, but I don't recall pre-ordering for the 3G.

A quick search on Google and Bing came up with a no pre-order for 3GS. I too skipped the 3GS, I didn't qualify anyways since my bill wasn't even close to the $100 or whatever the thing was.

It would be interesting to see if they did have pre-orders this time around and if Best Buy/Future Shop, and maybe even Wireless Wave, or Bell-only The Source would hop on for pre-orders in addition to the carriers own Retail Stores.

I skipped the 3gs too
however, my contract ends next july 2011.
so not sure how the new iphone4 will fit in the scheme of things for the early adopters of the 3g who still have a year left on their contracts. Im sure rogers made their money back with the 3g and then some.

You have much to learn :p

After 2 years you are eligible to get a new phone, doesn't matter if you changed your plan. Every 2 years you can get a new phone at the cheapest discounted price, so in the iPhone 4's case $199 (plus the silly $35 activation fee)

Chances are that you are eligible right now, if your account is in 'good standing' then you can get the upgrade a little early. I was eligible since May and I got my 3G on July 11, 2008
I suggest calling them and seeing what they say. If they see on their screen that you can get a 3GS or any phone for the cheapest price then you can for sure get the iPhone 4 at $199 when it comes out , as long as you extend your contract for another 3yrs, but don't worry it extends from that point forward so your contract will end in 2013. It does not add on to what is left in your current contract it overwrites it. The next time you can get an upgrade would be 2012 Summer

Apple currently sells iPhone with contract for carriers (activations, upgrades etc)
Any chance those phones would be unlocked, given that it's bought from the Apple Store, even though there is a contract.

The way I see it, the providers have you locked in with the ETF, so no need to lock the phone.

Firstly, I not even sure if in Canada Apple sells iPhones for all the phone companies, I'd be surprised if they did.

Secondly, if they do sell them or did in the future, I don't think they would have them unlocked, the phone companies would make sure of that.

The only way I know of getting a factory unlocked iPhone in Canada would be to purchase it at retail price from Apple. Currently only the 3GS 8gig is available.

Hey Draz...do you think Apple will start selling their unlocked iPhone 4's on launch day?? Or wait a couple of days/weeks for the phone companies to sell their stock??

Umm yes, you can currently get an iPhone from any of the 3 major Carriers in Canada. It will most likely be the same for the iPhone 4.
