As mentioned I'm with Fido and I'm eligible to upgrade my 3G in a week's time. The rep I spoke with on chat confirmed I can redeem my $80-something Fido reward dollars towards the upgrade price of the phone, activate in-store and pay no activation charge.

Stoked.

I think if Wind mobile offered microsim cards then it would work on edge only mode. 3G would not because their frequency is different as previously mentioned.

I don't think Wind offers microsim so the point is moot.

Did the Fido rep give you any indication at all as to when the iPhone 4 will be released?

Hey everyone,

Need a little help here, I'm going to U of T Mississauga in September and planning to purchase an iPhone 4. However, I have little knowledge on the networks company since I'm living in Hong Kong at the moment. I hope the following questions can be answered by you Canadian fellows :p Thanks for the help!

1. Since Canada are selling unlocked iPhones, the price in HK is a wee cheaper than the price there, should I then buy the phone here in HK and sign up for a contract in Toronto?

2. Since I'm not familiar with any of the network companies, mind stating which ones are the most reliable? I'll be spending most of my time in Missassauga lol, or possibly downtown.

Thanks, much appreciated! :)

Yeah you can buy a phone there and use it here. You can be on a month to month plan. Don't need to sign a contract at all if you are bringing your own phone!

Mississauga is one of the largest suburbs of Toronto. So all the major players have very good coverage in that area. Rogers, Bell, Telus, Wind, Fido, Mobilicity.

Wind and Mobilicity have the best "all included" plans, but there coverage is a bit weak right now. They are new. Rogers, Bell, Telus and Fido have excellent coverage but are a bit more expensive and A LOT tougher to deal with.

They offer different addons and extras so see what fits your needs the most.

Cool. I'm on Fido too, and have like $100 in fido bucks (or whatever they're called).

Hopefully it comes out reasonably soon.

Hey everyone,

I'll be moving to Vancouver in a little over a month and will be living downtown. As this is a major city, I assume all carriers have pretty good coverage there, but any recommendations?

Did the Fido rep give you any indication at all as to when the iPhone 4 will be released?

Just what I posted earlier...

--------------

From Fido live chat:

Possibly 1st week of July. (But don't quote them on that. ;) )

Who said that...was it just a customer or was it someone that works there who would possibly know this type of info??

I contacted customer service via their live chat regarding my upgrade eligibility and a rep told me this regarding the iPhone 4 launch in Canada. The verbatim response was: "...very likely 1st week of July. But don't quote me on that."

That sounds GREAT...with any luck it will be true!

I doubt very much we'll get it the first week of July.

I'd put my money on the last week of July, but that's just me.

I wouldn't put my money anywhere... I would love to have it early, but I can afford to wait. My 3G is still in decent shape and I want to get a white and not have to wait in any lines. We'll have to see how this June 24 release goes first.

Everyone's thirsting for any available info though so I posted what I had. Will be interesting to see later how all the predictions match up with reality. ;)

Ya for sure, the sooner the better.

I also want to be able to walk in and just grab one. Man, I hope we're not getting ourselves into a perpetual multi-week state of being 'sold out' come July. Ugggggh.

Glad to see many fellow Canadians here on MC representing the great white north.

While I initially felt as if Apple was screwing us over with a later release date, I can now appreciate why. With over 600,000 iPhone 4's being pre-ordered yesterday, Apple & AT&T are going to have some serious issues come launch day. Maybe it's best that we have some patience. They've already given us a bit of a gift with the fact that iPhone 4's will be unlocked at the Apple store!

Now, I want to know what you guys have heard regarding release dates? I have spoken to 2 representatives at my local Rogers, and they don't know anything. It appears as if Rogers hasn't sent any info out regarding this phone. They are disorganized once again, what a surprise. You think Rogers would want to communicate key information (release date, phone availability, etc) to their customers who are so anxiously waiting to shell out their money, right?

Other than the old guys at head office, Rogers is basically run by part-timers.

i think Rogers themselves dont know or if they do Apple probably wants them to keep their mouths shut

a question. I signed a new retention plan 4 days ago and while i was doing it i was told my HUP status wont change or anything and i would be able to get the phone. But some people have told me that you can only upgrade to a new phone when you sign up to a new deal
does anyone have any thoughts on this? i mean the fact that i cant upgrade to any smart phones till July 18 seems like it would be stupid to only allow to upgrade when you sign a new deal. Im confused and kinda scared

I've noticed. That's what it feels like when I go into their stores anyways. There's limited product knowledge and they usually can't answer most of my questions (not that they are tough to answer).

But, on the other hand, quite a few Rogers locations are run independently (as if they are franchised) meaning they are operated by a business owner who is not directly employed by Rogers. I guess even the owner isn't motivated enough to press his parent company for information?

We're 8 days away from the U.S. launch date and we still don't have any tangible information. It would be nice if at least 1 of the big 3 here in Canada could get their act together!

I have a ton of frequent flier miles to use up, so I'm thinking about flying to Canada for a day to pick up an unlocked phone. What city has the most authorized Apple stores?

I don't think Wind offers microsim so the point is moot.

Wind (& Mobilicity for that matter) only have a 3G/HSPA network (no gsm/edge at all) based on AWS band. At most we can hope for the "iPhone 5" next year to have AWS added.

Well the GTA (greater Toronto area) has a couple, I know of two for sure.

Try to google Apple stores in Toronto area.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

Hello our new Canadian friend!

If I were you, like the other person who responded said...I'd probably buy the iPhone in HK. You might get it cheaper there as I've heard many rumors of the unlocked iPhone through Apple going for $749 for the 32 gig model.

Once you get into Mississauga, I would probably stay away from Wind, Mobilicity, Virgin, Telus and Fido....I would prefer to be with either Rogers or Bell as those two are the biggest players in Canada.

Myself, I'm with Rogers....I've been with them for almost 5 years and have found them to be pretty reasonable when it comes to most issues.

Once you figure out what you're going to do, please come back and let us all know.

Hi,
With all of this talk about unlocked phones for Canada now, which iphone compatible network has the best plans? I've been with Rogers for I can't even recall how long and never really looked around to see what is available. I have the 6gb plan, which i've never even come remotely close to using 1GB so it has me thinking why am I still with Rogers paying 100/month.

Any thoughts out there regarding a cheaper plan with let's say a 1GB plan? For once I'm actually considering ditching Rogers for one of the other companies.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions! I plan to visit Toronto in Aug/Sep (hopefully the madness will have died down, and the stores will have inventory). Probably rent a car and visit 3-4 stores and pickup a couple of phones.

hey guys, I bought a iPhone 3G september 2008 and I am currently on a 3 yr contract with Rogers. Will I be able to upgrade to the iPhone 4 for the 199/299 price? I heard that I may have to wait until september 2010 (24 Months) but that doesnt seem right, because wouldnt the people who bought the 3GS be screwed?
