Is that for real? I thought people were just joking when they said "all you have to do is just cut your sim down to size"

I do believe Robbers will give those who purchased an unlocked from Apple a hard time in giving them micro sims separate without purchasing the phone from them and resigning another 3 year.

Yep microSIM cards have the same contact pad as a SIM card, it just has less of the plastic around it.

I highly doubt any of the carriers will care where you get your phone from (they make next to nothing from the phone, they make all their money from the plans). They may charge you the $25 or whatever it is for a new microSIM card though if you end up porting existing plans and whatnot.

This may seem like a stupid question, but here it goes...

I'm currently using an iPhone 3G through Rogers. If I purchase an iPhone 4 from Apple (unlocked) will I simply have to put my current sim into my new iPhone 4? (Provided I cut it down to size). In other words, will my iPhone 4 work out of the box if I just pop my current sim into it?

It should in theory. As far as I know no one has been able to provide support to the claims there are true differences between mini-SIM and Micro-Sim aside from the size. I'm using a cut down mini-SIM in my iPad that worked after updating carrier settings. I don't see why it wouldn't work with an iPhone 4. Personally, if the white iPhone is available to order from Apple Canada next month I'll pick up a Micro-SIM and have Rogers change the SIM on the account I use for my 3GS. I was planning on seeing what upgrade offers Rogers would offer but the lure of a factory unlocked iPhone 4 is far too great. Although, I am concerned the factory unlocked devices applies to the 8GB 3GS only. Considering information regarding the iPhone 4 has yet to be revealed in Canada and the only ordering information on the page is for the 3GS (aside from the iPhone 4 coming soon, etc).

New Micro-SIM's are $9.00 at Best Buy and Future Shop, I know Rogers lowered the prices of their SIM cards (mini) last month to the same price so I would assume they're also selling the Micro-SIM's at $9.00. I'm not sure if they charge for porting info over to another SIM though, hope not.

Ok... before I begin, I haven't called up Bell or talked with anyone from Retention.

So I currently have a regular cellular. In my opinion, my plan pretty much sucks... I've got 200 or 300 mins (can't remember) with 6 PM weekdays+weekends unlimited local calling and 100 texts. This for $35. I also have CI for an extra $7... and you can add on the SAF and those other fees. So I average between 56-60 dollars (depends on long distance calls) every month. I had a 2-years contract... but never renewed. Anyways, it's going on my 4th summer with Bell and I want to get an iPhone 4 (been waiting for it for a few months...).

I was wondering, when the iPhone 4 will be available, should I call Bell and directly ask to speak with Retention? Tell them my current plan and that I'm interested in an iPhone 4... willing to sign 3-years contract. Would they offer me something better than the current iPhone plans on the website? Obviously I can cancel anytime I want... but I'm willing to stay with them if there's a good offer on the table. If not, I would probably switch to Rogers.

What do you guys think?

I don't think this will be the case. I think it will be a similar process as getting a micro-sim for the iPad - also unlocked - where we (I work for Rogers) just give the customer a micro-sim to activate, at no charge. I will hope that buying an unlocked iPhone will yield the same process.

now that we know the iphone 4 has 512 mb of ram (double the iPad) wats the poin ot getting the 1st Generation of iPad?

kk yea we know the bigger screen and richer apps, but why not just wait till the 2nd gen ipad.

Whats the point of getting the 2nd Generation of iPad when the 3rd generation will have 1GB of ram?

Don't know why Robbers would do this? Buying a microSIM from them would mean that you would plan to use their service without them subsidizing a phone for you! It would be a profit for them starting Day 1!

you are in the perfect postiion to get a really really good deal. I would call them up and tell them you want to cancel and go to rogers because they are offering, this this and this. And make sure you say what rogers is giving you (obv lie) and make sure you make the rogers offer sound like heaven. And then talk about how wind is also giving you this very nice offer, but you wanted to test what bell would give you before leaving them. Im sure they will come with a very nice offer for you. And also dont just accept the offer right away, tell them you will think about it and if you dont like the offer call them back and tell them that you arent satisfied with xyz and would rather move on

and if you want a rogers plan, as i posted earlier i get 200 min, 6pm eve weekend unlimited, VM, CID, 2500 texts, mms, unlimited incoming and 500MB of data for about $44 tax and everything in. Also Ive seem ppl get 100 long distance minutes, rogers to rogers for right about $44 if not below it.

If i were you i would aim for something around $40ish and get everything i posted and since you call LD, then try to get those for sure. If not I'm sure rogers will love you to join them and will give you pretty much what i got for around that price. But im sure if you negotiate correctly and tell them about going over to rogers, telus, wind, mobilicity they will give you a very nice deal

good luck

oh and there is no SAF anymore, its replaced by GAFF and is like $2.98 or something like that

My contract was over in Nov of 2009. I called in a few days ago to see what retentions could do for me and they offered me the following:

$59.41 tax in.

200 weekday
Unl. weekends and after 6pm
Unl. incoming
Rogers to Rogers, Fido, Rogers Home Phone
1 GB data
2500 text
call display
voicemail
You can surely bring your price down a bit more, closer to $50, maybe high $40's. When you get the iphone 4, they will probably make you sign a new deal, but talk to retentions before that and try to get some credits. My plan is only missing network to network calling which can easily be credited fully and you have extra data, which should only make a diff of $5

If you are coming into Rogers or Bell as a new customer do they have any deals similar to the ones people who have been with them for a while get? Would rogers be likely to match any plan that bell offers?

How does everyone have such a good plan?

I'm with Telus, and I pay 56 a month including tax, and i get

100 anytime minutes
500mb data
6pm evenings and weekends
Unlimited text
Caller ID
Visual Voicemale 3

I doubt I'm elegable for an upgrade, considering I bought the Phone in December. I'd really like the iPhone 4 though.

I have a friend who is willing to buy my phone+plan for $400.00 cash (I know, right!?) but my only concern is that I spoke with Telus, and they said they wouldn't be able to match this plan for a new account, because new accounts can't negotiate plans. I'd have the same plan, except for my Caller ID, but I'm not sure I'm willing to give that up.

I also spoke to Rogers, and they said to match the plan I have now, it would be $72.00 a month.

Do you think calling telus and telling them I'm planning on cancelling to go to rogers would make them give me an early upgrade?

I spoke with a Fido rep this afternoon who told me that as far as he knew, the data on the mini-SIM and the micro-SIM is identical.

What exactly do you mean by a "mini-sim"? do you mean just a regular sim, like the one we all use now?

I tried to cut out a spare sim I had yesterday into a micro sim....I used an exacto blade and it worked like a CHARM...the thing practically cut it self into a micro.

Yes. The original SIMs were credit-card-sized: imagine the carrier cards they come in, but without the holes to let you punch the SIM out of the card. That didn't last long...

With display shortages.... looks like we'll be getting the iPhone in August or September :(

yeah, i'm not getting my hopes up.. i won't be surprised to hear that it'll launch in aug or sep even.. really sucks

We all knew this was going to happen. The inevitable success of the iPhone in the US looks to push back the Canadian release.

http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/apple-hardware/and-it-happened-the-iphone-4-may-be-delayed-in-canada/

I think it's worth mentioning that Apple's Canadian site never listed July on the site, just "Coming Soon." a few people on BGR have pointed that out, I know I never saw a coming in July anywhere on the site so unless someone can provide a screenshot showing the Canadian site listing July, I wouldn't put too much stock in the rumors. I'm fully expecting delay though, I think Appple was once again a little over ambitious about how many countries they can launch in. That said I'm not sure how much to believe the display shortage rumors either. I just can't see in a manner of days after having the devices go into production to have a shortage that would effect the production of nearly two million units a month could have happened without Apple at least knowing there was a possibility. I think if they were aware of that possibility Apple wouldn't have announced the launch months for other countries after the initial launch.

Yeah, the Apple site never showed "Coming in July", it has always been "Coming Soon". I really hope it doesn't get delayed.

Ahhhh sonofa....I was hoping it would release in July, that way the long lineups and sold out signs would be done by the time I'm able to take off from the base and pick up a new phone. Guess I'll just have to keep an eye out or maybe get the wife to Fedex me one in Quebec while I'm there.:(

I so hope you're right my friend!

I don't understand why I've been hearing the Canadian market is such a small market to Apple when come launch day we're going to have 5 carriers selling it

I think it's something to do with common f*cking sense. Our population is 1/12th of America's and less than that of one state (California). The cost of doing business in such a small market means that we're no where near 'priority'.

Actually Canada's population is 1/9th of America's, but I digress.
