Hi,
With all of this talk about unlocked phones for Canada now, which iphone compatible network has the best plans? I've been with Rogers for I can't even recall how long and never really looked around to see what is available. I have the 6gb plan, which i've never even come remotely close to using 1GB so it has me thinking why am I still with Rogers paying 100/month.

Any thoughts out there regarding a cheaper plan with let's say a 1GB plan? For once I'm actually considering ditching Rogers for one of the other companies.

If your contract is up and recently about to expire then tell them you wanna cancel your service and talk to retentions and then tell them you are paying to much and bell telus wind will give you something more for way less

for example
I get 200min eve weekend unlimited after 6, unlimited incoming, VM, CID, 2500 txt, 50mms and 500mb data for $44 tax and everything included

so you hve to negotiate with then and be firm and nice at the same time. So talk to relations. Also don't know what you are getting for $100 so don't know if you have a good plan to begin with

hey guys, I bought a iPhone 3G september 2008 and I am currently on a 3 yr contract with Rogers. Will I be able to upgrade to the iPhone 4 for the 199/299 price? I heard that I may have to wait until september 2010 (24 Months) but that doesnt seem right, because wouldnt the people who bought the 3GS be screwed?

Yes, for sure you'll be able to get the 199/299 pricing! Seeing how you started your contract in 2008, you shouldn't have any problems.

If anyone won't get the 199/299 pricing it will be me and the rest of the people who bought the 3gs on launch day last year...but hopefully they''ll give us much better pricing than having to buy it out right.

Let us know what happens...good luck!

I'm going to wait until Rogers announces their prices and upgrade details. I upgraded to the 3GS last year. If they don't give much of a deal for me I'll likely buy it straight from Apple and save myself from having to sign another 3 year contract.

One thing for sure though, now that Apple is offering us the unlocked iPhone I think it will force the companies to offer amazing deals to keep us locked in....if they do, I'll definitely be happy to save the money and sign again...I figure I'm going to need a phone for another 3 year anyhow, so if the price is right, I will.

What are the rest of you people thinking?

And what company are you all with? Rogers, Bell, Fido or Telus??

I actually heard the Virgin is now carrying it also on launch day!

Buying an unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple sounds good. The only concern I have is whether Fido (my current carrier) will have any microSIM cards on launch day. I'd hate to have the iPhone but have no SIM to get it to work on a network.

I know rogers is going to try to deny me a full upgrade, it sucks trying to work around a family plan. The other phone was just upgraded from a dumb phone to an iphone 3g a month and a half ago, and I've had the iphone 3g since launch day(coming on 2 years). But Rogers told me when I was upgrading the other phone that mine won't be eligible for an upgrade for a long time, since the contract was renewed when the other 3g iphone was added.

Surely Fido (and all carriers) have had enough lead time from the announcement of the iPhone 4 to get their s*** together...? (Regarding micro sims if nothing else.) That would be a huge blunder to not have them.

Thanks! Hope your right:D

See, Im about to buy a MacBook Pro and an iPad, so money is getting kinda short :( So I can only afford to put about 300 into the phone, so I dont think I can afford the no commitment phone...

You can always just cut down your existing sim card.... As a microsim is just a cut down sim card.

Robbers of course :D
And my deal isnt even that great. Ive seen some that are jaw dropping. People are able to get credits left and right, especially if youve been with them for a while and contract is almost done. And i got that deal with 2 years still remaining so i couldve done a lot better if i was done my contract.

As i said you dont want to talk to the regular CSR. As soon as you get an agent tell them you want to cancel account and are thinking of going to wind, telus or bell and BS about what amazing stuff they are giving. And make sure when you are negotiating a contract you are talking to retentions department, since they are the only ones who can give you credits, discounts and crazy plans.
if you want to know what you can get, post your plan and I'll let you know how much you can cut and get everything for

Surely! You mean hopefully!!! It always surprises me the amount of ineptitude that emanates from our wireless providers.

I can see Fido/Rogers having MicroSIMS available for locked iPhones, but I'm not sure if they'll have any available for people who've bought their iPhones from Apple directly

Hey everyone,

Need a little help here, I'm going to U of T Mississauga in September and planning to purchase an iPhone 4. However, I have little knowledge on the networks company since I'm living in Hong Kong at the moment. I hope the following questions can be answered by you Canadian fellows :p Thanks for the help!

1. Since Canada are selling unlocked iPhones, the price in HK is a wee cheaper than the price there, should I then buy the phone here in HK and sign up for a contract in Toronto?

2. Since I'm not familiar with any of the network companies, mind stating which ones are the most reliable? I'll be spending most of my time in Missassauga lol, or possibly downtown.

Thanks, much appreciated! :)
Adding to what the others have said, Mississauga is the western suburb of Toronto. Solid network coverage.

Rogers, Bell, and Telus are the Big Three companies.

Bell was the Original Phone Company in Ontario before competition; Telus was the Original Phone Company in Alberta, but now they compete with each other and with Rogers.

Rogers was the Original Competition. Rogers built its own GSM/UMTS network. Bell and Telus have competing CDMA networks in different areas, but they went together and built a nationwide UMTS network to directly compete with Rogers (and also offer the iPhone). Note that Bell and Telus don't have GSM to fall back on if there's no UMTS available; Rogers does.

Fido, Koodo, and Solo are the discount brands of Rogers, Telus, and Bell respectively. They share their parents' networks.

Virgin is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) that uses the Bell/Telus UMTS network, and it too will be offering the iPhone 4. There are several other MVNOs out there, like Canadian Tire, President's Choice, Cityphone, and others, that ride on the networks of the Big Three.

Fido was originally a separate company with its own network, the first GSM network in Canada. It was bought by Rogers and integrated into the Rogers network; later, the branding was changed from 'stylish cosmopolitan professional' to 'black, yellow, and inexpensive'.

Wind, Mobilicity and Public Mobile are all new companies. They are building their own networks and their coverage is confined to the biggest cities, but I believe they can roam on Bell or Rogers.

Public Mobile is CDMA, so you can ignore them. Wind and Mobilicity are on the AWS-1 band (UMTS band IV), using 1700 MHz up and 2100 MHz down. The iPhone will not work on their networks. (I was really hoping that the iPhone 4 would have 1700, like the Nokia N8 does, but no such luck.)

So that's what the landscape is like. If you're just going to be in Mississauga and downtown, every company will have coverage. Choose rather by feature and plan.

Canadian phone companes aren't used to this free competition yet, and selling SIMs for unlocked phones is a little new to them. You may have to be persisitent in order to get a SIM for an unlocked phone. SIMs can be found on the websites of Wind, Rogers and Virgin, and are at least mentioned on Mobilicity's website.

I was thinking of crossing the border from NY to get a unlocked one for use on TMobile. Do you think the Canadian Apple store's on Toronto will ask for proof of residence?

Does anybody know if I will be able to order the iPhone 4G online and pick it up at the Apple Store in Canada (I'm in the US)? Anybody try this with the 3GS?

I doubt Apple would throw up any barriers. You should be fine coming from the US to buy an iPhone 4 in Toronto.

When the original iPhone launched in the US I was in Michigan and bought one (knowing there would be an unlock soon enough) and I did not have any issues. The iPhone was not available in Canada at that time.

So... to all of the US residents, come check out our beautiful country and buy an unlocked iPhone 4 while you're here!

The big question is, will Apple impose any sort of restriction on the number of iPhones someone in Canada can buy, and who may buy them? Will they check addresses, require a Canadian apple ID, or deny sales to people presenting non-Canadian credit cards? I wouldn't be surprised by any of these at all... I expect the Toronto Apple stores to be mobbed.

The Apple site seems to say that the 3GS is now also sold unlocked at full price by Apple.

I think that you can only order from the Canadian Apple store if you provide a Canadian address. Someone in another thread said that they couldn't order from the UK Apple store without a UK address.

I doubt it's going to make any difference to Apple. They will still get full money for there phone. Plus this way they will get more phones out too. T-Mobile customers will try and pick up Canadian Unlocked iPhones on top of there regular AT&T customers.

Mind you, I have never tried to buy a Phone from the Apple store before.

Actually I'm pretty sure I read somewhere yesterday that yes Apple will only sell iPhones to people of that country. It would be a huge waste to drive down here for nothing...I'd look up the phone number for the Apple store in Toronto and ask them before coming here.

Well I am sure there are people closer than I that will try, I will wait for the results. :)

GOD!! Where do you get this bull crap info...you're so misinformed! HAHA just joking! If anyone has any questions regarding Canadian mobile companies this is the post to read and the gentleman to ask! I'm glad you're on our side of the boarder and also contributing to this thread, as you're extremely well informed! Go Canada Go

Is that for real? I thought people were just joking when they said "all you have to do is just cut your sim down to size"

I do believe Robbers will give those who purchased an unlocked from Apple a hard time in giving them micro sims separate without purchasing the phone from them and resigning another 3 year.

Wow you really have a good deal! I'm now two years in my contract with Fido, I pay 79$ everthing included for 6g data, 200 min + unlimited evening and week-end starting at 5pm, 2500 txt messages, visual voicemail and called ID.

How much do you think I can cut? Thanks!

If you have a retention plan, how does upgrading to iPhone 4 work?

Do you get locked in for 3 years at the rate you have now, or do you need to change plans?

Upgrading your phone with a retention plan is the exact same as upgrading as a regular consumer. I double checked with them numerous times to ensure that I will be fully eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 4 at the advertised price. I haven't bought a phone through Rogers since 2006..

When I agreed to the retention plan, I renewed for 3 years form that date. My plan will stay at that rate till I decide to cancel or change it. When the iPhone 4 comes out, I will upgrade to it and my commitment will be renewed again from that date.
