I have no clue about this since I don't have apple store in Halifax. I would actually ask a similar question whether I'm able to return whatever I ordered online to a regular apple's store or not?

They wont bless us in Atlantic Canada with a Apple store eh...

@Sdao

What carrier you are with? How do you feel about renewing your contract, if you are considering a locked phone, in terms of commitments and other obligations. Sometime I think I just want to get an unlocked phone instead of being obligated to a specific carrier while technologies never stop developing!

We think alike...

I'm with Rogers. I'm happy with their service, I've been a Rogers wireless customer for 9 years now and I haven't had any complaints aside from paying slightly too much on a monthly basis. I can't remember the specifics of my plan, but I do have the $30 6GB data deal. Total is something like $85/month (inc. taxes, etc). I know I can negotiate a much better deal when my contract comes up (summer of 2011).

I am buying an unlocked iPhone 4 directly from the Apple store. I'm not going to take advantage of whatever "deals" Rogers will offer me. In one year, I will be through with my contract with them. At that time, I will re-evaluate the state of cell phone providers in my area (Toronto) and see what the best options are for me.

Now that I'm out of University and have a great job that pays well, I'm not too concerned with buying a full priced phone every once in a while. I can write it off on my business as a necessity (which it absolutely is) and still manage to keep up with Apple. I'm fairly sure they will continue to use a 1 year product cycle with the iPhone, meaning we have something new and exciting to look forward to each June/July!

Call, tell the rep her number. Give them your name, if everything goes well then explain to the rep that you want to get a hardware upgrade done for her in store and want to make sure it is possible.

If they say yes you can do it then ask again if you are an Authorized User Level 1, that basically means you can do everything on the account but cancel it. If they say yes then that's all you need to know. Also who's name shows up on the bill?

You're in Toronto... I know for a fact 2 stores allow Authorized users to upgrade:
Bloor & Jarvis
Bay & Adelaide

But you might find a few more that do =)
And hopefully closer to where you live so you don't have to travel all the way downtown!

Also the Rogers store locator works fine for me. Do you have any addons like Noscript blocking anything on Rogers.com?

*edit*
You can change your plan anytime it doesn't effect your ability to get an upgrade. It might make sense to get it the day of as you start enjoying the data that day. But you can get some breather room and also be well prepared if you do everything you can before hand. But I must warn you that if you do get a data plan and do NOT get an iPhone 4 because they are out of stock then the reps can't 'delay' the charges on your plan, you can cancel it but it is a hefty charge ($100).
If you do plan on getting up early and getting the iPhone then go ahead and add it early if you have doubts on when you can get it then don't and do it in store when you get the iPhone 4 if adding a data plan is all you are doing.

Thanks Draz, amazing info!

Now that I see BestBuy offers 2500 Reward Zone points for activating an iPhone, I'm thinking of going there instead (and only 2 minutes away from me as well). Would I be able to do the authorization for my sister's phone with them? Or is it Rogers stores only?

Now that's stupid. I called a Virgin Mobile store and asked the guy if they gonna have the iPhone 4 on friday and all he told me was : Well we should have it but I can't guarantee anything.

Duh so what now? I'm gonna go there friday morning and MAYBE they will sell them?!?Grrrr...

Exactly, you can sell the phone once it is officially unlocked for good deal after one year use or so. Having a locked phone makes you restricted to certain interested buyers. Even jailbreak would be available (thanks to EFF) to unlock the phone, people will be more likely interested on official unlocked phones.

If you are not into Virgin, you could try other carriers. Bell and Telus announced on their websites release will be on July 30. Of course Rogers and fido will follow.

Yeah I thought about that but I've been with Virgin for 5-6 years now and always had great customer service and I really like their plan (they have great ones for students). It's just that I don't understand how they can not guarantee they will have it on Friday...If Best Buy sells them with any carrier then I might go there instead.

Definitely. That's what I'm planning on doing. Resale on this factory unlocked phone should be fantastic. I'll use it for a year, see what improvements are out next summer, and then see if its worth signing with another provider or renegotiating with Rogers for a better deal.

So where/how are you planning on getting your iPhone 4?

I think I'm lining up friday morning (3 or 4 am? I have no idea at this point) at an Apple store somewhere in the GTA. I'm buying a 32gb and a 16gb (for a friend).

Just got an email from bell. Hot off the press.

Bell introduces new data features offering smartphone users 6GB of data and unlimited WiFi service at Starbucks locations for only $30 a month.
In addition, you can share your data usage with your iPad by adding a new iPad share rate plan for only an additional $10 a month.

Only avail until sept 30th

Did the rogers representative give you the authorization? I'm in a similar situation where the iphone 3G I currently have is on an account under my dad's name. I asked the rogers representative if it was possible for my dad to give me authorization to buy the phone myself but she said he would have to be there in person to renew my contract. Is there anything specific I should mention to the rep?

Cool, hopefully more news to come....sooner than later!!

Right, BestBuy most likely will have them on July 30 for sure. But I guess Virgin store will also have them too, probably the guy doesn't want to give his words about this matter.

Unfortunately, nowhere in Halifax to lineup at. But finger crossed for online orders :D

I'm getting 16GB, kind of enough storage for me

That is wicked! Hopefully rogers will match that, especially the iPad sharing part...

Maybe. I hope so. I called 2 Virgin stores and they told me the same thing.

Canadian Pricing

Ok here it is right from apple press contact, via a friend who has a blog.
Here is a link to the whole email http://www.allthingsios.com/ if it's allowed here?

Pricing & Availability
iPhone 4 will be available without a contract for a suggested retail price of $659 (CAN) for the 16GB iPhone 4 and $779 (CAN) for the 32GB iPhone 4 through Apple’s online store (www.apple.ca/store) and Apple's retail stores. An iPhone 3GS 8GB model is currently available without a contract for $549 (CAN). iPhone 4 will roll out to many more countries later this year and Apple will announce availability and local pricing for these additional countries at a later date.

Great! Sounds like one Canadian carrier was listening when the whole share Rogers data plans with iPad fiasco went down. An extra $10 a month to share the data soounds fair to me.
Ok Rogers, your move. Oh wait, it'll be exactly the same.
Still a nice deal though.

Amen! I called two Rogers stores here in town and they both told me they would be completely surprised if they had any iphone 4's on Friday! Both said they were on order, but who knows?
Also, my wife called Future Shop and they told her they would only have 14 of 'em if they even get there by Friday. Highly perturbed to say the least.

Ah that's too bad. However, I'm sure you'll be able to order at Apple.ca

Waiting for that package in the mail will certainly be the hardest part. Get them to upgrade your shipping!

Just thought I'd point out that Starbucks now has one-click wifi for everyone (not sure if the 2hr limit still applies, but you don't need an account anymore). Just mentioning in case that was swaying anyone. The iPad share is definitely a tempting offer though.

I thought you could only get the 2 hour free wifi from starbucks(daily) if you had a starbucks card and were registered on their website(if it changed I didn't know). I have a card and regularly use the starbucks wifi. You can buy a $5 starbucks card and you get free wifi.

They *just* changed it on Canada Day so you don't need an account or a starbucks card anymore.
