I just learned that with Fido, if you buy a new phone two years into your contract, you need to sign a new three year contract which is gonna be added to your current agreement (so if you signed in 2008 and buy the iPhone 4 this Friday, your contract will now end in 2014). The unlocked phone is more and more tempting...

250 weekday minutes
unlimited evenings/weekends 6PM
unlimited incoming
unlimited rogers2rogers
2500 txt/cid/vm
500 international text messages
100 Canadian long distance minutes
6GB data (w/ BB)

total is $45 + SAF + taxes = $59.xx

What the f...?? That's it, I'm calling to renegotiate my plan. My plan is the same as yours except that you have 50 more weekday minutes than me, international texting and long distance, yet you're paying 20 bucks less than me after tax!

Is Fido the only carrier that does that?

Yes only Fido

Wow! At one time, Fido would boast about not having contracts! Now they are amongst the worst for stacking contracts!

whats funny is that i've been doing that for ages now. and i don't mind extending my contract.

also, fido just updated their site.

Last year when people bought the 3GS one year after buying the 3G, did they sign a new contract so they could get an extra 150$ fido dollars? If so that means if they buy the iPhone 4 they're going to sign another contract so the agreement is now ending in 2017?

That's awesome for you if you don't mind, but Apple has new releases every 12 months. I don't think it's unreasonable to skip a release and upgrade every 2 years.

If Fido stacks my contract, then that means I'm locked in until 2014. If I want to upgrade in 2012, Fido adds another 3 years on, and I'm now locked in until 2017. You can't keep doing this indefinitely. Technology moves too fast for 3 year contracts, never mind stacking!

true...i just checked my account when i upgraded to the 3g and it says my contract is up in august 6th 2011. and i upgrade every 2 years unless something crazy will happen with the iphone 5 that i just want to have. but if it's anything like the 3gs, i'll wait.

Use some common sense. When the iphone 5 comes out next year, what are you planning to do with your iphone 4? Sell it on ebay, and then buy the iphone 5 unlocked from the apple store. Problem solved, no more stacking!

Rogers is still renew day of and no stacking.

It would be interesting to see what happens over the next 1-2 years when the next iPhone comes out and all those locked to 4 yrs want it....

It's Fido that should be using common sense. Of course customers are going to buy unlocked when they can afford to. (Yes, I intend to do this rather than indefinitely extending my contract.)

What I meant was, why does Fido insist on this policy of stacking when the other carriers do not? Who's going to extend their contracts adding an extra year every time?

Anybody called and ask about what the stocks are going to be like at stores? Thinking of getting the 32GB one, probably not many people are going to be going for that one?

Won't be able to get it until Saturday after 5pm at Best Buy or Future Shop cause they're the only ones open that late. :(

Yes, same here, I skipped the 3GS last year. I don't need to have a new phone every year. But like I said, I don't think two years in unreasonable for smart phones, especially when Apple updates the iOS rendering the older models obsolete.

I wish Fido understood this.

Just buy the phone full price without contract @ Apple or Fido.
That's what i'm doing anyways, there's no way i'm going to stack my contracts....

That's exactly what I'm gonna do. If you buy a contract free iPhone at the Fido store, is it locked to Fido or the same as the Apple Store? Can you use you Fido dollars for the purchase? (I have no idea what to do with these if I'm buying my phone at the Apple Store)

You'll probably be locked to fido and you can use Fido dollars for the purchase, from what I know.

Although a post on ModMyI confused me when they said stores will also have unlocked devices.

If you purchase the iPhone at the Fido store, with or without contract, you can use your Fido dollars towards a discounted price. Unfortunately, like all carriers, if you purchase from them, they will be locked. But, it's not like it's hard to unlock anyways. It's just tedious. I'm going with Fido, because I have $100 in Fido dollars. I don't travel a lot, so purchasing an unlocked from Apple won't make a difference for me.

PS - you can't use Fido dollars at the Apple Store

Thanks for the info! This is really helpful!

It's rumored that the Apple Stores will be selling unlocked phones. I'd be very surprised if a carrier did so voluntarily.
