Orca Logic are my first, and usually only, port of call in the UK. They guarantee their RAM for specific Macs and charge no postage. What's not to love?

There has been alot of positive feedback for both, I suppose going cheaper is your best option!

Thanks.

Thanks guys.

If i bought a 2GB stick of RAM, can i add it to the one that is already inside the iMac to make it 3GB Ram all together?

or wont that work?

Just purchased 4GB RAM (2x2Gb - £91+free postage) for my Macbook from Orca memory. I had ordered the same from Dabs several days ago, which was £15 cheaper, but they went out of stock just as I placed my order and do not know when they are getting more in.
Don't mind the extra few quid, just want to feel the full force of my new laptop! Photoshop is a bit sluggish with the standard 1GB.

Thanks for the the list, it has proved to be very useful.

As an update for you all. Orca sent an email when it was dispatched, RAM arrived next day, and Photoshop and Aperture now fly :)
The RAM arrived with clear instructions on how to handle it and an anti-static wristband. I was the weak link in that I had forgotten where my small screwdrivers where!
I too have used Crucial in the past, and have found them very good too.

Orca and Crucial make it clear their memory is guaranteed to work in a Mac, and make it very easy to find the correct module for your system. I am glad I changed my order from Dabs, as they offered no such guarantee - as someone else said earlier, £15 saved on potentially troublesome modules after spending so much on a new laptop seems daft.

The 2GB so-dimm stick of KV RAM is £27.99 at Play.com incl. p&p. I paid £128 for two of these sticks in my MBP about three months ago. Not a problem with the memory since. Whoever said that Macs were fussy about memory has his head stuck in the PPC days.

Commodity Intel equipment is much less fussy about RAM tolerances, and Kingston VR is hardly rubbish.

I see that it has just gone out of stock, but I had a stick delivered this week for another laptop. Keep an eye on this if you are looking to upgrade in the next month or so.

Yes but it wouldn't be as beneficial as having 2x2GB as this can take advantage of the iMacs dual channeling considering the prices we are talking about here I would suggest simply buying 2!

is this the one i need for a 2.4 Intel Core Due 2 iMac ? or is it only for MacBooks?

All the current Macbooks (PRO) and iMacs use PC5300 200 pin 667Mhz Ram which from what I can see is what you have at your eBay link

Agreed. I picked up 2 x 2GB Kingston Value sticks in Beijing a few months back and have had no problems at all. Cost me a total of £45 for 4GB after some hard bargaining. :D

If I was buying from the UK, I'd probably go with Orca or Crucial just from past purchases but you can't knock sub-£30 from the UK for Kingston branded memory.

Buying cheap RAM is not the best idea. Sometimes it doesn't fit right, is bad when you receive it, and there is no lifetime warranty!!

Definitely, its always worth sticking with a decent seller.

Crucial Charge £32 for 2x1GB of RAM for Intel "Core" Macs, which compares well with other retailers, especially as they off good customer service. (linky) A single 2GB stick is £52 (linky).

Ive just ordered 2 x 2GB Modules from play.com

their description - Kingston 2GB DDR2 SODIMM Upgrade For Apple iMac / MacBook (£27.99 each with free delivery!) and they are in stock!

Its worth a gamble to be able to chuck a full 4GB into my iMac Alu.

Wow, awesome thread. I'm so happy to have found this!! Thank you. Just 1 Q....

  1. Play has what we are all looking for, for £27.99 including VAT!
    Other:
Free postage technically makes it the cheapest. A good find by Weckart

It won't fit in your MBP.

You also want SO-DIMMs, not DIMMs
I just wnated to check that the one at Play.com (link above in 1st quote) will definitely 100% fit/work in my MBP? Ta.

Hey glad the list has been helpful....

Anyone have exact statistics on how much faster the 2gb boost is on a macbook pro? Or anything else for that matter?

Thanks

2x1GB or 1x2GB for Macbook 2.16?

Hi, as the title, which is the best upgrade for the money, 1x2GB (+ existing 512 MB) or 2x1GB? Checking the link (thanks!) and delving a bit further, Play.com has the 2GB at £27.99 or 1GB at £14.99 each :D. Time to get more RAM
Would the slight decrease in performance be worth taking the 2GB stick? Also I would have the option to add another 2GB later :). By the way, they are back in stock now.
Don't use Photoshop etc, just iLife 08 but do use Parallels.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Well I would suggest getting a 2GB and upgrading to 4GB as soon as you can!

Althought the ram runs most efficiently in pairs you will have to replace the 2x1GB within time and will have wasted money in the long run.

So why not wait or save that extra bit longer then you can purchase the 2x2GB which is in the short run good for your computer and in the long run good for your wallet!

Hope this helps!

I've just bought 4GB from Crucial for my macbook for £65. This is more or less as cheap as it's ever going to get.

It might go down to £45 (I don't care about £20 here or there) but it's more likely to start going up again for various reasons.

Am quite amazed, as my macbook will now have more RAM than all my previous computers and flash cards and USB key drives combined!

To be honest I have used Crucial and have had nothing but good tales... there company is still going so I assume that they are providing more functioning modules than duds and are therefore still in business...

Thanks for your opinion though!

No, what he means is that their website uses "Dynamic Pricing", meaning they read the saved files (cookies or cache (I forget) to see where you normally shop), and base the prices on their website on whether you're rich or poor.

So yes.....be careful. Completely immoral company. However, their RAM is good.

I'd go for Kingston or Crucial/Micron.

That's the same for everything though.

Which is why you don't buy from retailers without warranties.

If it's bad, you send it back.

Ok....go on. Save £15 if you want to. Personally, I think getting good RAM the first time around is better, as it's not worth the trouble that bad RAM gives you.
