If you want to take a punt at some cheaper memory, here is a link:

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_11&products_id=103275

Shipping works out at £4 for non-express, so overall, a tad cheaper than Play.com if you order at least 2 sticks.

The memory ID is DANEPC253002GBSODIMM which suggests that it is Danetec, who are better known for USB pendrives.

Until a couple of days ago, they also had the Danetec 2GB DDR2 6400 so-dimm for £18 each plus postage, which would have made 4GB for £40 at the faster laptop speed.

This was the link:

Might be worth checking to see if they get more stocks in at the same outrageous price. Remember, the Channel Islands have no VAT, so any item under £18 is shipped net of VAT and none is payable.

At £25 per stick + £4 p/p it'll work out costing £1 more than play.com for 2GB, or £2 less for 4GB :(

i Just bought 2x2GB Mushkin RAM for my MacBook Pro only 860 DKK. I will pick them up today or tomorrow, and post benchmark of before/after on my blog (se below).

Is there actually any performance differance between say buying 4gb kingston value ram over 4 gb crucial ram?

Or is it just reliability?

Also do you think I should add the supposedly dantec Ram to the list?

Thanks

It's your thread - you da boss.

My personal opinion is this: It either works or it doesn't. 7dayshop mentions the Macbook in the above link. I have no reason to believe it will not work, either.

Some will be of the opinion that quality is worth paying for. Up to a point I would agree, particularly if you suspect that the RAM is either stolen or recovered from faulty batches (sorta refurbished), as these may have performance issues. If I had a mission critical server, I would pay extra for performance and reliablilty (bad ram can cause data corruption). Ditto if I were an avid gamer with money to burn and need every fps. Otherwise, I do not see the point.

Bear in mind that with the switch to Intel, you are doing well if you hold onto your laptop for more than two years, so paying extra for something you will discard/upgrade before it is likely to die does not really make economic sense any more.

To be honest I have used Crucial and have had nothing but good tales... there company is still going so I assume that they are providing more functioning modules than duds and are therefore still in business...

Crucial is the outlet of Micron, one of the big manufacturers. And what is very useful with Crucial: You can select which Macintosh model you have, and they will sell you the right memory for exactly that model. If you get the wrong memory, it is their fault and they have to fix it (hasn't happened to me yet). Other shops, if you get the wrong memory it is your fault for ordering the wrong one, so you have a problem.

Just talked to someone at crucial. Mac Pro ram will be £285 + vat for a 4GB Kit.

There having a laugh.

No they're not. FB-DIMMs, particularly those for the new Mac Pros are not in plentiful supply. Add to the fact that they are EEC and you can see where the costs come in.

If you earn money with your machine, it's worth going for Crucial over cheapo RAM.

CanadaRAM who is a professional in the RAM industry says that substandard RAM is one of the most frequent causes of mysterious crashes and flakeouts in computers.

It's not just it works or it doesn't work. Sometimes it sort of works 95% of the time.

For me, the cheapest in this thread so far is the £40 for 4gb (unmatched?) that was mentioned just now. To be honest, I'd rather pay the £65 for 4GB from Crucial, and I did exactly that. It's worth the £25 extra as my computer is my workhorse. (And Crucial refunded £12 anyway).

If it was much more than £30 extra, I'd probably start thinking again. It can be a matter of timing. :)

Is play.com's stuff Kingston VALUE ram?

Although I have no hard evidence I am pretty sure it is! This is supposedly substandard to things such as the crucial ram...

Im sure a buyer here will be able to clarify...

And I have decided to add the super cheap RAM to my list... just for those people just wanting cheap cheap cheap RAM!

I dont think the Macbook Pro supports the faster 800Mhz speed... anyone able to clarify this?

Thanks

I don't believe it is, because they specify that it's Kingston Value ram elsewhere on the site, and it has the "KVR" code. The stuff in question here is "KTA".

So is this a brand anyone recognises? Could it potentially be better than expected?

Thanks

Good nice to know that someone else is getting a well deserved speed boost...

Im still waiting on a Macbook Pro let alone the RAM!

Crucial don't sell the max RAM for this macbook

So after seeing the difference 4GB made to my MB, my dad wants to up the ram on his MB too.

He has one of the early C2D MBs, 1.83 ghz, max ram 2GB, which were sold with a cripplingly low 512MB ram, so I showed him the Crucial website.

Strangely enough, they only show upgrades to 512 and 1GB (2x512). There's no sign of the 2x1GB kit.

What gives?

EDIT: I just checked back 3 hours later, and the 2GB kit is up now. Must have run out of stock  but why bother taking down the 2GB option for a few hours /days?

KTA is Kingston's standard RAM - i.e. a cut above the Value brand and normally selling for a couple of pounds premium, though having used both the Kingston brands and Crucial's Micron derived in my Macs alongside Apple's supplied Hynix, I remain to be convinced that there is any discernable difference in use, whatever anyone might think. If there is a 5% error, you find that out very quickly, then you send it back.

The last laptop I had memory problems with was my Wallstreet. Now that was a fussy machine.

To Weckart: But this RAM (unless im remembering the wrong things) is cheaper than the kingston value ram?

What gives?

Thanks

Then seeing as 2x1GB KVR sticks costs only £1 less than the 2GB KTA stick, it's definitely a great deal! Even for my pre-Santa Rosa MacBook - it'll run on 2.5GBs soon :)

Who knows how the markets move? Pricing is rarely logical. Yesterday I saw on the news that you can often halve the price of rail tickets even at peak times by buying two tickets: One from the starting point to a halfway station and the second from that halfway station to your end destination. No logic behind this as the journey is the same either way.

It could simply be overproduction on the KTA range - or that people have cottoned on to the fact that KVR is perfectly fine for their Macs and therefore suppliers have put pressure on the KVR market leading to relative shortages. Either way, RAM pricing is volatile, so enjoy while you can.

Sounds good I just need a laptop that it will go in! Ha

To recap: if anyone finds any other deals or finds a different price in the "list" then post it and ill change it!

Thanks
