Where can I find "cheap" compatible 1Gb stick of DDR1 for my iBook, I am disgusted to see the price of DDR2 :(

I would say eBay...

I got a 1gb stick for my powerbook and it was £30 incl. p&p.

Do you know what ram type you need? I could have a look around if you gave me a specific type...

Thanks

The 7day site is off the air. Not confidence-inspiring.

Watch out for "2 GB" RAM advertised which is actually a set of 2 x 1 GB SODIMMs.

You are never going to find DDR (DDR1) RAM as cheaply as DDR2 because the bulge of demand and competition has passed that format by.

I really can't get behind the idea of RAM from eBay sellers. Your support and warranty protection will be near zero.

Remember that a website (and an eBay account) can be set up in minutes... and can disappear just as fast. There's no substitute for years of business with a good reputation from a real-world location.

7 day shop is online

Both DDR2 667 and DDR2 800 are £18 per 2GB sodimm module. You will take a punt on the manufacturer, but it's unlikely to be incompatible with Apple's generic PC innards.

Although 7dayshop.com has only recently been noticed as a computer memory retailer, they have actually been in business since the year 2000. They originally started off selling photographic supplies. Obviously, in the last eight years the market for film has more or less vanished and been replaced by digital photography. So they started to sell memory cards for digital cameras, then memory sticks and now memory for computers, which are of course are all sourced from the same suppliers.

They keep their prices low by being based in the Channel Islands and avoid VAT on items dispatched to the mainland on anything priced under £18. That is why so many of their products are priced at £17.99 and packages are often split to keep under that limit. :)

And if you are criticising a company for it's web site being down, a certain major retail site we are all familiar with is often off-line for hours on end and not always for the introduction of shiny new products. :p

I just ordered a load of junk from 7dayshop.

- 10pack of DV tapes
- a camera mount extender
- a monopod
- a cake of 25 DL DVD-R
- 1GB CF card
- 2GB SD card
- a couple of other odds and ends.

All for about £50. Pretty cheap. About two weeks later, it all arrived, in 3 or so separate packages. All except the 2GB SD card which was on back-order (and typically, it was the only item I really needed to get in a hurry). Postage was £3.50 flat fee for the lot.

Another vote from me for 7day shop - not paying VAT is nice, as long as you're willing to wait a couple of weeks.

7dayshop is fine :)

Hi there, been browsing/reading for long but this is my first post in order to vouch for 7dayshop.

I ordered them on Monday and received my two 2GB RAM (DDR2 PC-5300) for Macbook today (Sat.) morning. They are CELENADE brand and there's no information whatsoever about warranty etc. They're just pure/naked RAM packed in anti-static pouch.

I put them in right away and they work fine. I checked system pref and the RAMs have no serial no. on them.

All in all, what I want to say is that:
1. I received my RAM in the stated time (1 day processing and 4 days delivery)
2. They are CELENADE brand
3. They have no serial no. nor warranty
4. MOST IMPORTANT - they work :)

Hope this helps.

Crucial are offering a free 1GB USB Gizmo Jr stick with purchases of RAM of 2GB or more. + free shipping

Time to update this thread, with DDR3 RAM being used in the new MacBooks...

Anyone know anywhere cheaper than Crucial for DDR3 SODIMMS?
4GB kit (2 x 2GB) for £95.16 at the moment.

I have the feeling that (for once) Apple's factory upgrade is quite reasonable no ?

Yes, in the sense that this time Apple aren't blatantly ripping you off. However it's still cheaper to buy 2 x 2GB modules yourself plus the fact you get to keep the original 2 x 1GB modules for resale or backup if you so desire. I expect DDR3 prices to start nudging downwards shortly and when they do Apple won't reduce their upgrade prices though if history is any guide.

7dayshop.com have told me that "it shouldn't be long" before they start stocking DDR3 laptop memory, but can't quote a price at the moment.

In other news, it's currently cheaper to buy Crucial DDR3 SODIMMS from Dabs.com. A 4GB kit comes in at £86.59, including delivery.

Does anyone reckon that that anyone would benefit from me updating this for the new ram...?
