Buy now. On previous history, I expect it to go up to £100+ in the summer.

Then as newer, faster RAM goes into mass production, this particular macbook RAM type will never be as cheap again to buy new.

What postal service do Crucial use to ship their RAM?
Does the package need to be signed for, (as I may not be at home during the day)

TIA

I;ve ordered from crucial several times, but soz I can't remember. Ring and ask them or email?

I ususally get it delivered to work, and it comes in a tiny little cardboard strongbox.

Thanks, I ordered and chose special delivery from Royal mail which cost £2.50 extra but means i get it in 1-2 days rather than 3-5.
Also for some reason I had a discount of £5 applied to my order which means 4Gb cost me £59.01 all in. Result!:)

Issue with DVD player and 4GB

Just to let you all know, having 4GB in a Santa Rosa MacBook (with the x3100 integrated graphics) can create issues with Apple DVD Player.

If you have less than 2GB ram free, and insert a DVD, DVD Player will sometimes crash OSX, needing a reboot. <Scratches head as to how this could happen>

The workaround at the moment is to reboot before inserting a DVD, or turn off autoplay.

See thread https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=5170543 for more info.

Hopefully Apple will release a fix soon.

Isn't the solution to use VLC? It seems to offer more functionality than the DVD player. It is what I use on the odd occasion I watch a DVD.

VLC works too.

Just that most macbooks come with the default set to launch dvd player when inserting a dvd film.

This can be changed in preferences -> Hardware -> CD and DVD's

Just incase anyone needs it!

You timed that well!

At the moment, Crucial are knocking £5 off all orders over £50 (€6 off any order of €60 or more for Euro customers).

7dayshop are down to £17.99 for 2GB (+ £3.95 delivery)

Thats a tenner less than PLAY, where I was considering buying from. Does anyone have experience buying from them?

If so (no absolute newbies sorry, I can't be 100% certain its not some 7dayshop guy) I'll buy 4x2GB for my family and myself.

7dayshop are fine - deliveries are never that quick - like a week or so - similar timeframe to Play.com (Channel Island based).

They usually have lots of cheap dvd-r's and cd-r's though so if you are ordering memory it is a cheap way of stocking up on blank media - the £3.95 delivery charge covers all the items so in effect you get the media shipped free.

As I am now at home I have been able to update the front page again!
7DayShop is the new top scorer!

To PhsycoFreak:

I believe this is the justification you were after:

Thanks, I'll likely order today.

I can back up that 7dayshop are a good reliable supplier, I've been using them for at least 5 years with no problems. As logana says, delivery isn't very quick but you should get it within the week.

Thats fantastic. As soon as my dad gets back I'll force the £70 out of him :)

Might be better to buy the equally as dirt cheap PC2-6400 800MHz RAM
for forwards compatibility when/if Apple release laptops that take advantage of it. I've read that it works fine in current laptops, but have also read of people having problems with it so YMMV.

Ah sorry misread you first time!

Well 600Mhz is 100% compatible but I am unaware of the 800Mhz, but if it is backward compatible it could be a good option... But if it were me, i would prefer to go for something that I knows will work, rather than something that will definately work in a machine a few months away but may have some limitations on my system...

I have added the story to Digg so other Mac users have the benefit of not being ripped off by Apples large prices.

Please support this by Digging it yourself!

Thanks!

I can also vouch for 7dayshop. It often has good deals on something or other. I helped a colleague order memory from it last summer, when it also had a promotion on DDR2 sodimms.
As others have stated, it can take up to a fortnight to arrive. If the cost is under £18, the chances are that you can expect the sticks in separate packages to avoid VAT.
