Well ok then but still at max brightness with it off it shouldn’t be darker than the 12 maybe the same, I have always had max brightness and auto brightness off why do I want a dark display
Did you compare them at different level brightness? Or just max?

You might be onto something here, not a deal breaker for me, my 12 pro max definitely looked brighter at 30/40%

Don’t have it anymore, so I can‘t compare them side by side.

I use to have my 12 pro max set to 30% when using it indoors, was using my 13 pro max today, felt a bit dimmer at the same brightness, had to bump it up a extra 10%

Maybe it’s a software bug, apart from that loving the phone, 120hz is awesome.
120hz was nice but I doubt the brightness is software related just sucks I guess but I hope the apple demo mode makes it darker I’ll test when I get mine delivered

Do a side by side comparison at different levels of brightness, using Siri to set the brightness.

If you don’t feel it’s bright enough send it back. Apple will refund you within 14 days I think. I definitely will if I don’t like it. It’s better than having a device you dislike

Can’t send mine back, 120hz is a game changer, wait till you experience it, had my 13 pro max for 12 hours so far, it’s worth buying for 120hz alone.

Well I hope you like your new phone and figure out what you were doing wrong to make it not as bright. Specifications don’t lie so the newer phones are brighter that’s just a fact. There’s always the possibility of a defective display so perhaps the 13 you looked at had some problems.
This might be the case. I had a similar experience but battery related. Last year my 12 Pro had pretty mediocre battery, and yes, I know the batteries were smaller and paid no attention in the first few days because of all the indexing and calibration it goes through but it didn’t get better. Returned it convinced it was a faulty battery and got the 12 Pro Max just for safekeeping.

I can’t return it’s on my carrier plan and I want 120hz over anything, but still annoyed if it’s not brighter or the same

You wouldn’t return it, trust me, I couldn’t go back to a 60hz iPhone, even though it was smooth as butter 24/7

120hz+iOS is a game changer.

It’s the same story over and over again since the X! You can’t compare the brightness on the display units. They’re all throttled due to the temperature management. They always look dimmer. I’ve seen this every year since the release of the iPhone X.

I agree about the notch. I can't believe they made it deeper. Yet made it narrower and didn't bother to use the screen real estate.

As for the screen. I'm not denying the OP's experience, but something was up to make that situation occur. If Apple say the screen is bright, then it's gonna be bright. There is no reason for them to lie about that.

Check out this comparison of the 12PM and 13PM... 8:41sec for the screen temps.

I’m pretty sure even on your carrier plan there’s a return period. At least in the USA. Of course they won’t mention it because they don’t want you to return it. I just mean if you feel like whatever issue you have is a dealbreaker.

So I spoke with someone in store and yes apparently the store units are in demo mode and reduced brightness so I’ll see when I get mine hope that’s true, now for the notch it’s much worse lol deeper is not smaller

So you created a thread and ranted all this time just to learn you were wrong and spreading false info. Yet ironically you’re in another thread chastising someone for spreading ‘false information’ about the color of the graphite. And nowwwww you’re onto the notch. Are you this way in every aspect of life?

Dude I’m giving correct advise people are wrong the graphite colour is identical it’s not darker just because a photo looks it, because of the lighting, why do I get hate for speaking the truth, that person is making people think the new graphite is some how darker when it’s not

And it’s not false, I’m saying what I saw in store and comparing them my self I’m allowed to speak my mind if you don’t like it then leave, and when someone is spreading false info like graphite someone is darker when it’s not I will help others not get there hopes up, and when I moaned about the notch it’s because it’s worse end off

And you riled up a bunch of people over screen brightness being crap when in actuality you were staring at dimmed demo units. I get that there are things bothering you about this phone but man, it’s like negativity overload.

What kinda response is that, the phone states it has 1000 nuts compared to 800nits so it should be brighter not darker, why is that allowed apple is lying
Apple is a publicly traded company... They can't just lie and make up specs lol. You know the publicity nightmare that would be..... Why would a reputable company like Apple just randomly make up and lie about a spec in their most popular device when they know people take these things apart and scrutinize every inch of it.

I have the 13 Pro Max and 12 Pro Max and the 13 Pro Max is clearly brighter and better whites than 12 Pro Max.

Maybe the one in store was getting hot and lowering its brightness, pretty common when the phone is charging and abused at same time.

The 13 pro max is clearly brighter than 12 pro max that’s for sure

In direct sunlight the 12 would struggle no such issue now

What about in doors with auto brightness off and max brightness?

Just spent 1 hour in the apple store comparing them, and this is my take on max brightness with auto brightness off and True Tone off the 13 pro max was much darker than mine and the staff’s iPhone 12 Pro, they said 1200nits it’s a lie we compared a few and they are all darker in the apple store, they said outside it’s brighter but on max brightness it should be brighter not darker, also the notch is horrible it’s worse you notice the taller notch and even the apple staff said after I said it he noticed it to, I don’t understand how the new phones that are spose to be brighter are darker and also the whites feel flat he said my 12 pro max looked brighter and the whites popped more
This is why you wait a year as with a new 120hz may come issues. The 2nd gen of iPhone with 120hz will have all the 13's issues gone ;)

Lol this has happened many times apple has "Said" that a feature is "Amazing" but In reality it comes to just being the same or worse in fact. On paper its fine In situations it may not work as expected but they told you it would and the specs show so they never lied just had a good marketing team xD
