Sounds like you forgot to turn auto brightness off in accessibility. It limits peak, even if you max the slider.

I assure you they didn’t lie about something as trivial as it being 1000 nits. That’s incredibly easy to test.

This entire thread seems like you’re just looking for something to be outraged about.

When do you intent to run the display at 1000 nits? That’s eye-seemingly bright in all but direct sunlight. The battery life will also be absolute crap.

So you always use your phones with auto brightness off and max brightness? I feel for your phones ☹️

I feel for his retinas. But not really.

Well, I'm going to look at them in the store today so I'll see how they compare to my 11 Pro Max.

I don't mind the notch, like at all. Never understood why people complain about it. I would've been fine if they had just left a black space at the top for the notch stuff, but oh well, they can't. Nonetheless, clearly Apple knows that people don't like it and felt the need to change its shape this year. Personally, I'd rather they just kept the old notch than made it taller (even if it overall takes up less space).

My 13 pro max has a low contrast screen, honestly my old six year old iPad Pro blows it out of the water.

such a disappointment, plus it weighs a ton.

take a photo with front facing flash - that's PEAK brightness when it puts the panel into a short-term overdrive

low contrast OLED, I can only imagine. Your whites and blacks are only three nits apart.

This is why you wait a year as with a new 120hz may come issues. The 2nd gen of iPhone with 120hz will have all the 13's issues gone ;)
this is hopefully a joke cuz there's new features every year, so you could ALWAYS make this argument. no new generation of iPhone won't have at least SOME new hardware in it :p
If anything the 13 is just a more refined 12 generation iPhone. Which is one of the reasons I got one!

Oh and if apple allowed to set brightness to 1000 nits manually you’d be making another thread about how battery lasts only a few hours.

they should offer a turbo mode, like those fancy high power flashlights. If you activate it, it goes to like 3000 nits but you get 5 minutes battery life and the phone becomes too hot to hold past running it for 2 minutes.

Most people do not understand that the eye perceives brightness intensity logarithmically (Weber-Fechner law).

This is why getting 20% or whathever other % nits increases seems hard to perceive in true scenarios. In other words 20% nits increases does not translate in 20% perceived brightess improvement. But 2-3% at best
Ofc zero marketing department in consumer electronics will teach you that to give you the illusion / placebo that this is big improvement while it's not.

For what it's worth, I just took my new 13 Pro and my 12 Mini out in the direct sunlight. The Pro is noticeably brighter than the 12 Mini as it should be comparing 1000 nits to 625 nits. (or nuts, whatever it takes)

I too was disappointed in the brightness with the new lineup at the Apple store, until I got home.

After initially testing my brand new 13 Pro compared to my 12 Pro, it wouldn’t get nearly as bright and its lowest setting was much brighter than my 12 Pro.

That is, until I disabled auto brightness. Upon cranking it up to 100% again it was truly impressive how bright my 13 Pro got, definitely 200 nits brighter than my 12 Pro. The dimmest setting was now exactly the same as my 12 Pro. So everyone turn off auto brightness, wait a few seconds and then crank the slider up!

I’m sorry my home one is brighter, I jumped the gun, the store ones are limited in demo mode, but I stand by what I said about the notch it’s much worse imo the tallness is more notable than the width and it feels bigger even tho it’s shorter

Lol this has happened many times apple has "Said" that a feature is "Amazing" but In reality it comes to just being the same or worse in fact. On paper its fine In situations it may not work as expected but they told you it would and the specs show so they never lied just had a good marketing team xD
Marketing terminology and an actual spec are 2 different things.... Apple can say the iPhone has the most amazing storage in a phone ever! but they can't say the phone comes with 256gb storage when it only comes with 200gb

Glad it worked out 👍🏻

Maybe change the thread title then so you don’t confuse others into thinking the brightness is low :)

Do you auto brightness on? If so turn it off and see what happens I know with my iPhone 11 Pro Max if I turn it off the phone gets brighter

In the video I posted in my previous post in the thread you can definitely see that. Now, I don't know if the owner of the two phones had contrast turned on for the 12PM and not for the 13PM.

Glad it worked out 👍🏻

Exactly!

sorry guys I jumped the gun, the store ones was darker as I’ve been told they have demo mode and don’t go as bright but at home it’s much better so I’m sorry I was wrong, I still don’t like the taller notch lol
No you didn’t jump the gun, here is my so called 1000 nits up against a 11 and 12 pro max, exact same brightness and settings Except for bold text on the 11 and 12 pro max.

Auto brightness off on both as well.

Other users are also saying their screen isn’t as bright as older models.

I think they do lie, many users on here are saying their previous phone is brighter than their 13 pro max.

Mine is definitely dimmer. Photos above

Demo mode has nothing to do with the brightness.

I don't want to play defense for Apple here, but I doubt they just flat out lie about the specifications of their new devices.

Are you sure it was really on full brightness and not auto brightness, for instance? Given that True Tone, Night Shift and such exist, the displays obviously tend to do a whole lot of adjusting by default.

And at least according to this guy, the notch does not reduce the useable display area.

I forget the recording format but some videos on YouTube will show that tiny sliver (the deeper notch area). Its literally like one row of pixels. Doesn't bother me at all, but I feel we haven't heard the end of this topic. lol
