I got pulled over once in Virginia for doing 115 on Interstate 85. That was a very bad day.

Somehow, when I saw the unmarked car closing on me, the only thought through my mind was "great! now if anyone gets pulled over, it'll be this maniac doing 120 in a Caprice, not me!".

When he finally pulled me over, and approached my window, I said "Is there a problem officer?" and then couldn't stop from laughing. In retrospect, a bad move.

I remember getting up to 90 mph once on an open stretch of I 75 in Ohio. Just wanted to see what it was like!

I can't resist retelling this story in this thread:

Back in 1992, when I worked for NeXT, I once had occasion to drive Steve Jobs to the airport in North Carolina. He was going to miss his flight unless we hit light speed, so he agreed to pay for any tickets or increased insurance premiums I'd have as a result of flooring it. Unfortunately, that car (a 1980 BMW 320I) couldn't do much more than 105, but trust me, it was a white knuckled 105.

He made his flight. The rest is history.

Sigh, I miss that RamCharger.... It had street tires so it did a pretty smooth 100... The suspension on that thing was unbelievable. I never rolled it, and only came close once.. (Sliding sideways in a gravel parking lot.. I was 17, nuf said. ;)) I have almost rolled my Explorer twice, and I drive much more conservatively now....

i plan to test it out on the highway one late night when no one is on the road. i think mine tops out at about 150 rounded.

You are absolutely right. ~240kph in a 1990 520i outside München.

134mph in a 1986 Supra on 41 north of Chicago - scaaaary. Car not happy.

But we U.S.'ers have an answer now, and that answer is:
MONTANA

There have been anumber of Europeans that go there to scream the Rockies. I'm sure some get killed, but I understand it's Scary as hell, as the road - unlike the Autobahn - was not graded or surfaced for those speeds.

Autobahn... baaaa.... :p :p

You ought to take a drive on the M69 mate, WinterMute and evoluzione know what I mean!! 30 miles of unlimited, totally empty, non-policed love tarmac!! with about 2 junctions for it's entire length, so no slower cars pulling on.... heh-heh!!

The downside of using Montana is that while using it as your personal State Of Autobahniness, the cops can still pull you over for what they deem "unsafe or wreckless speed" which is totally at their discretion, and usually in the neighborhood of 100 mph or faster.

I don't dare do more than 85 mph in my delorian, for fear of travelling through time.

My Peugeot 205, however, gets me up to 110 on the military road. (Long wide curvy road on the back of the isle of wight.)

I think it was a little over 120 in a Ford Probe Turbo back in the early 90s out side of Indianapolis around 1 AM.

I almost had an opportunity to drive on a test track during a ITS (Intelligent Transportion Systems) conference, but got food poisoning and missed all the fun.....

D

hmmmm....

well in a ruf twin turbo porsche i hit upwards of 175+...have no idea exactly what the mph was....i was driving ya know...

fastest officially clocked...148mph by the wonderful texas highway patrol. my '76 911s targa was a smoker. in my hometown i regularly got pulled over and hassled...being a teenage guy with waist length hair in texas( in 1979) was pretty much a crime unto itself... throw in a porsche and you might as well put a bulls-eye on the hood.

fastest sustained speed was minimum 110 from dallas to houston...believe it or not, two 18 wheelers drove with us for half an hour at 110...drafting on them was fun though i don't think they got the same effect from us...:D we did kick it up to 135 for a while. that was in a porsche carerra.

none of those speeds were as scary as doing 56mph on a mountain bike while downhilling in tahoe...that was the only time i thought seriously about dying...especially when you know your chain bounced off at around 40 and you know what happens when a chain locks up your rear wheel at speed.

All right, another Ford Probe GT owner! I must say, they handle pretty well over 100. I just wish the speedometer went over 120 so I could tell how fast I've really gone in it. At least the Lamborghini's speedometer goes over 200 :)

Fast is fun

Fastest I've been:

150 in my BMW 330Ci. I do 120 regularly
140 in Porsche Boxster
135 in BMW X5
130 in my 1978 Porsche 911SC
130 in a Barber Dodge race car
120 in Volvo V70 Wagon
97 in the crappy family Suburban (Speed Governor)

The 78 Porsche gave me the largest sensation of speed, because the car is so low and so old. Has racing seats, harness, roll bar, etc.

The BMW 330Ci gives me the least sensation of speed, so smooth and quite at crazy speeds. Excellent car.

What's the fastest speed you have driven at yourself ?

For me, that would be 200 km/h (~ 120 mph). I had borrowed a Mazda MX-5 and made a nice trip with a friend. Didn't drive too long at that speed, though' since with a convertible, it is nicer to drive around 140 km/h (~ 84 mph).

i have driven around 90 mph with my old datsun 610 when i was a teen...now, being much older, i rarely surpass 70 mph and often drive most of the time under 60 mph...ps - i have an old volvo so you old volvo owners totally understand what i mean

i have a friend that has surpassed 250 mph...but he did that on F1s and Indy Cars at the racing school at Laguna Seca in California...he pulled more Gs than my air force pilot friend and driving in 150 degree heat (in the car) seeing only a narrow tunnel and black and white..which is not my idea of fun...that's what the high end racecar drivers have to go through....some lose several pounds just in one race!!

hey, i've got a new idea...the Indy Race Car Diet as sponsored by jefhatfield

All right, I've driven the fastest so far! :D I have a friend who has been trying to hit 300 as one of his life goals. He's driven a NASCAR at Daytona, they have this program where you can ride with a NASCAR racer for a day and try it out for a few laps around the track.

"Where you either go fast or are blow to peices on the road"

My dad hit 160 just to keep up to pace with the rest of the cars, then my mom went insane saying 'WERE GONNA DIE' so we went the slower hi ways...

I myself non-driver license or permit, have gone 30 closed road (5 minute closure), but it was only for 5 minutes... :(

I hope my dad will be taking me out soon on the new G35 he got.... oohh yeah.

germany is somewhere between a third and a half of the united state's population, but when i was in driver's ed in the early 80s, it was reported that germany had the same number of deaths as the united states

granted, besides the higher speeds allowed, germany can drink the united states under the table...i also wonder about france, italy, japan, and korea

I hope my dad will be taking me out soon on the new G35 he got.... oohh yeah.
:p

heh technically *I* have only driven under the speed limit in most states, but that was just my mom and dad letting me drive their cars with them in the passenger seat occasionally...

now whats the fastest speed a car has attained I have been in? *devilish grin* :)

i doubt 150 out of the box .... computer regulated with a car that new probably. i know that my friend gtp can real world max at 150 with better tires but with the stock tires we can only goto like 126 or something like that... after they change the tires they can reprogram something to change the limit and his GTP is a 98

115 on I-65 through Kentucky before I got pulled. There is nothing scarier than a KY State Patrolman waling up to your car with the mounty hat and the mirrored sunglasses after being busted for 115 in a 60. ;)

Somehow, he just gave me a warning with the promise that I would never again speed on "his road". Never did.

Regards,
Gus

i'm not sure that they do but there is increased pressure to include it as a safety feature
