280kmh (174 mph) on my brother's Fireblade. You've really got to have your wits about you while travelling at those speeds, especially on a bike.

Well a friend of mine had a 70's vintage camaro with a 327 that we built extensively. It was pushing about 400HP when we were done. We got it up to 169MPH on a timed mile and just ran out of room and had to slow down.

I had a 1985 CRX Si that we lowered as far as possible to reduce drag and then milled the head and did some other minor engine work and we got it up to a timed mile of 138MPH.

Going fast in a car is one thing and yes when you get up to 120+ you really feel like your moving and then at 140-150+ it's insane but do it on a bike. I've been to 158MPH on a motorcycle and let me tell you that feels insane with the wind ripping by you.

I don't believe anyone who tells me they've been to such and such speed unless they timed out a mile. The reason is most cars speedometers are off on the plus side by about 5-10% at 60MPH. That means at 120MPH the speedometer could be reading as much as 12MPH off on the fast side. Meaning they're speedometer is reading 132 but they're only doing 120MPH. This only gets worse the faster you go and at 180MPH the speedometer would be reading 198.

I think I might have like a heart attack or a panic attack if I was going that fast on a motorcycle...

when i was in physical therapy after my foot surgery, the guy would talk about his bike and how much fun it was to go fast. he always emphaized how you couldn't feel 60 if you weren't looking and how much fun it was....that made me want to have a bike maybe enxt year but its tough toget a motorcycle license in illinois.

usually the governer kicks in at 105-110. needless to say, not as fast as i wanted to have gone

ok i found out, my car does have a governer, which limits it to 149, so honestly no one, including me on the Acura-TL forum knows its true potential since there are no perfermance chips for the TL to remove it.

ok, in my Lancia Delta HF Turbo (1.6l fwd) I managed 121mph, and it's rated at 122mph. That was sutained too, it would get there hella quick. I regularly went over a 100mph and not just on straights either, here's one for iGAV, racing an RS Turbo up the A1, hit top speed, round long sweeping corners, not easing off a bit, beat the RS because of it :D

in my Toyota Corolla hatch (1.3 12v fwd 5sp) i had 4 friends in the car and hit 101mph in 3rd gear! but that maxed out at 105 (in 4th i think, 103 in 5th)

just last week i did 109mph in a friend's Land Rover Discovery, backed off as it became a tad unstable.

i went from Boston to The Bronx, dropped a friend off, and on to Brooklyn, in 2 and a half hours before, average of about 90 i think.

and that's on public roads (oh, and for those who know, i live right at the end of the B660, one of the best driving roads in England, and only a couple of miles away from the new Bedford Autodrome, flew past there every day on my way to school, took the bus 28 minutes, my record was 6, and it's 11 miles of country roads :D )

on the track, around 130ish in a 16v 'grale and an Alfa SZ.

one of these days i'll get above that, hopefully sideways at Pikes Peak

I know, it's *so* awesome to drive at over 200...I've only done that one time, though. As far as limiters...I believe I read somewhere that many companies get a financial incentive for including them for safety reasons, but I'm not sure.

I don't know if thats true or not, but some have very good reasons for limiting speed. Mercedes E55 (I think it was that model) is limited to 155 mph because no one mass produces tires capable of taking such a heavy car any faster. its capable of quite a bit more.

If you do just be sure not to act like all the idiot tourists around here and burn out your brakes on the way down. That's what gets them on Pikes Peak. That and doing stupid **** like shifting into neutral on the way down and running right off the side.

Nah, that's the great thing about a bike. With a little car it takes a day and an age to get to top speed. With a big bike you can do it in 5 secs and then be back at legal speeds 5 secs later. So your time of danger is much much lower.

Well that would be a good guess but it wouldn't be right. My first street bike was a '91 Suzuki Bandit 400 back in '94. By the way I've been riding motorcycles on my own since I was 6. In any case I started using Bandit as my online name back then and started using MacBandit in about '96 when I started joining Mac sites.

In any case the bike I was riding was a BMW K1200RS. I worked at a BMW Motorcycle shop for 7 years and was Service Manager for 5. Sometimes you have a customer that wants you to take it out as fast as you can and make sure everything is okay with it. It just so happened that on that day the road was clear and the weather was good. I would have gone faster but they're limited to that speed.

My previous fastest speed was on a BMW R1100RS at 146. I just ran out of straight away. I use to live out in the country and the closest pizza place was 7 miles away one way. So I went for the pizza on the bike. Motorcycles have been my only form of transportation for most of my life even with Oregon rain. In any case I was able to get down the curvy country road and to the pizza parlor and back in 12 mins. That included paying for and strapping the pizza on. Oh, and when I got back the pizza was still burning hot in the middle of winter. Fastest pizza delivery I have ever heard of.

I love reading all the posts from guys with really spiffy sports cars who've gone soooo fast.

I have a crappy, 23rd hand, 1998 Chrysler Lebaron. It grinds when I'm in what I guess is equivalent to first gear (automatic transmission). I've gone over 180 Km/hr in my car many times, but last year I went 195 Km/hr, with three passengers. Let's just say that I did it when they were all busy talking, so they (girls) wouldn't freak out. Unfortunately my girlfriend felt how fast we were going and looked at the speedometer. For some reason, she wasn't as impressed as I was...

The speedometer only goes to 200 Km/hr, so I think I'd need to be going down a hill to go any faster ;)

I live in Calgary, Alberta, which is basically right by the mountains. When I was 15 or so, my Dad was driving down the mountain, and I said "maybe we can save gas by just putting it in neutral". My Dad and I are of Scottish descent, so that was appealing :D

Well, when it came time to break and turn, he realized that the car had stalled, and so the power stearing and power breaks weren't working. He wasn't sure if he could just turn the car on again without breaking it (you can)... I'm pretty glad that he worked out a lot, because we came pretty freakin close to dieing that day. He just barely kept us on the road, while the breaks slowly decellerated us to a stop, several kilometers down the road.

Hell, yeah. I've had my share of fun in beaters. My first car was a '79 Datsun 310 which I bought for $600 in '92. At the time it looked very very good for it's age and had low mieles. I use to do 100mph in it daily coming home from high school. One time on my way to washington I got it up to 120MPH going down a really long hill. It never ran the same after that as I floated the valves on it for about a mile to get to that speed. Later on I took out a deer at about 90mph and had to put a new radiator, hood, and front fender on it from a junk car I bought. Then I forgot to put coolant in it and just put water in it which froze and the car over heated and warped the head. So I put the head off the beater car on mine which had worse valve guides then the one I took off. Ahh, my first car, there wasn't much left when I was done with it. I also jumped it quite a bit.

My dad has a 240Z. What a great car. He hasn't driven it in years though as it was in mint condition until two people hit him in two days and totaled it. He bought it back from the insurance company and parked it.

Just one question. Why do you have bigger discs on the rear of the car then on the front?

Steve's a great guy. We used to love joking with him about expensing client dinners at the local steakhouse back to NeXT. He hated that. It offended his vegitarian sensibilities.

actually mate, superchargers and turbos are very different to one another. a supercharger compresses the air before it enters the engine, the denser the air, the better it is, whereas a turbo works on the exhaust gasses. the latter being more fun i think, as it's not as smooth as the supercharger (although these days they're a little more subtle). nothing like watching that turbo boost guage creeping from the negative into the boost zone and feeling it punch you in the back and catapult you forward at scary speeds :D
