the fastest i have ever driven, lets see
i would have to say about 210 MPH :D
in my big brothers porsche
it was so cool
the only reason why i didnt go any faster is cause i could feel the front of the car lifing up...so i slowed down after that ;)
but still very exilerating

I know, it's *so* awesome to drive at over 200...I've only done that one time, though. As far as limiters...I believe I read somewhere that many companies get a financial incentive for including them for safety reasons, but I'm not sure.

i doubt 150 out of the box .... computer regulated with a car that new probably. i know that my friend gtp can real world max at 150 with better tires but with the stock tires we can only goto like 126 or something like that... after they change the tires they can reprogram something to change the limit and his GTP is a 98
well im not sure, i guess i will find out soon. on all the road tests ive read. the Acura TL3.2 Type S tops out at 147. Maybe tonight I will find out if it limits it.

i wonder if they would give road test people a special versoin with no cut offs, because it said right there on the page, 147 with Type S

Many of those mags get special editions and tuner cars to test, those lucky bastards! I remember reading an issue where they tested a bored out twin turbo Corvette against an F/16 fighter jet!

Well a friend of mine had a 70's vintage camaro with a 327 that we built extensively. It was pushing about 400HP when we were done. We got it up to 169MPH on a timed mile and just ran out of room and had to slow down.

I had a 1985 CRX Si that we lowered as far as possible to reduce drag and then milled the head and did some other minor engine work and we got it up to a timed mile of 138MPH.

Going fast in a car is one thing and yes when you get up to 120+ you really feel like your moving and then at 140-150+ it's insane but do it on a bike. I've been to 158MPH on a motorcycle and let me tell you that feels insane with the wind ripping by you.

I don't believe anyone who tells me they've been to such and such speed unless they timed out a mile. The reason is most cars speedometers are off on the plus side by about 5-10% at 60MPH. That means at 120MPH the speedometer could be reading as much as 12MPH off on the fast side. Meaning they're speedometer is reading 132 but they're only doing 120MPH. This only gets worse the faster you go and at 180MPH the speedometer would be reading 198.

Its possible, but there are some places that *remove* the regulators...

yep i know, and i plan to do it once i get the information.

Wow... I'm quite surprised by the number of responses. Seems that Americans feel the need for speed at least as much as Germans :) . And 210 mph, wow... even with the speedometer 15% off, that would still be insane :p

A lot of speed limited cars are able to exceed the speed limiter if the emergency flashers are on. I know for a fact that convertible American cars like Firebirds and Camaros have that ability.
haha, i didnt know that. i really want to try that. hmmmm... bypass...new paved roads...4 AM. :)

Really, i haven't heard of that...

And iJon there is a ton of info... everwhere.

Its all electronically limited so easy to fool around with.

My Wife Went Faster

I was in Germany for work and my wife came. Hertz messed up, so instead of the SMART car (or other little boxy number) we ended up with a brand new BMW 325i convertible.
Unfortuantely it rained alot, so we never got to take the top down.

However, driving from the hotel to my work, I managed to get up to about 220kph (about 137mph)! :D
But my wife went down to Heidelberg and hit 240kph/150mph before she backed off.

Fastest in the US? Not sure, I had an Acura Integra for a while, but was beat up. Handled great, but the engine was petty shot, never got it over 100, but never drove much under 85 either! hehe :p

Just recently driving out of Crater Lake, there is a LONG STRAIGHT ROAD
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.ad...ZxSaA/M+5y8pxHI+P8Xn1YSQYo29h7KjhBe2yu7YL1k4=
RT 138.

Managed to get my 2002 Passat Wagon up to about 110 before I decided I did not need the ticket.

Speed is fun.

Back in 1992, when I worked for NeXT, I once had occasion to drive Steve Jobs to the airport in North Carolina. He was going to miss his flight unless we hit light speed, so he agreed to pay for any tickets or increased insurance premiums I'd have as a result of flooring it. Unfortunately, that car (a 1980 BMW 320I) couldn't do much more than 105, but trust me, it was a white knuckled 105.

He made his flight. The rest is history.

What was Steve Jobs like in person, on a one to one basis? It seems that no one but his personal staff really gets to be around him!

you should go back and work for him, his personal hit man and driver, can you say...GTA: Cupertino.

Hell yeah! I'd love to be Steve's getaway driver!
Steve:"Let's give Bill a lawn job"
Me: "Hell yeah!"
Steve: "Let's use the company Hummer"
Me: "The one with the picture of Calvin pissing on the Microsoft logo?"
Steve: "That's the one"
Me: "It's go time!"

In my Jetta 2.0 -- 123, gear limited

In my diesel -- 112, drag limited (in a light mist -- no radar or laser works)

Now, when I get the ol' TDI chipped, she'll be pushing 120+ at 35mpg!

From your screenname, I'm guessing you were riding a big-bore Suzuki I4, right?

Yep, most bikes, too. My fastest momentary speed was 155 MPH indicated on a VFR800 on Hwy 33 in California, and 147 indicated sustained for 30 minutes+ on the same road, riding a CBR600F3.

I rode a Hyabusa on Angeles Crest but was too chickensh*t to bust 65 :)

But we U.S.'ers have an answer now, and that answer is:
MONTANA

One Problem with that Partick...

Montana has had a very strict 75mph speed limit since 2000. They had a problem with "Yahooes" going 150+, which with a 4-Lane Freeway, and trucks limited to 60mph was not a good combination.
Wikipedia Article on Speed Limits
But of course they usually give the 5-10mph over that the rest of the country has. Plus becuase of the belief in Montanabon, the cops now have credit card readers in the patrol cars, and will pull you over if you are going 86 or faster.

TEG

155MPH all the time between San Francisco and Los Angeles (Used to have to travel it often for work on weekends and the Central Valley is a joy to drive except for the areas patrolled by plane) At 155MPH, the engine disengaged from the transmission (kind of a floaty feeling that always disturbed me) until it dropped down again to 155MPH. I always meant to get the chip limiter taken off, but you go through tires really quickly at those speeds and they are pricey for that speed rating.

I also used to do 155MPH between St. Louis and Chicago. The distance is usually through farm land where you can see cops miles away.

After about 120MPH, the speed difference doesn't seem to be as noticeable because the interior cabin sound doesn't change and since you're concentrating on driving and only looking straight ahead on "cop watch", you don't look to see the things flying by on the side :D

Fastest I've driven (period) is 187MPH in a Ferrari 456GT on a race track, alone. I got nervous then and didn't choose to tryout the race spec'd Ferraris (though I did admire their sound.)
