I just don't get it. If they were going to discontinue the iPod, why can't Apple be honest and tell everyone? Would you rather have someone keep a secret from you and, tell it last minute or, say it out loud while there is still time and, the damage has not been done?
For most businesses, it's not in their best interest to be forthcoming or (too) honest about these things. By keeping mum on the IpT's fate, those who are interested in them are more likely to get them. In general, the less informed the consumer is, the easier it is to sell stuff that benefits the seller.

Are we the poor people here? I mean the ones who are thriving for an ipod touch 6 because we cant afford an iphone 6? Geez...

Have you tried browsing using an iphone 6?, an a5 is pretty much a pice of junk for that price pretty much.

I agree that the browsing experience is pretty poor on my 1st gen iPad Mini, but it does other things very well still and that's why I still keep it. It's not even the main thing I do on my iOS devices.

I'm not poor, I just don't want to keep my music on the same device I take pictures and do other stuff with. I like the freedom that having both an iPhone and iPod Touch give me.

BUT I AM! ha ha well not poor poor but not rich either, if i were rich i'd definitely go right now to an Apple store and buy an iphone 6 64Gb to replace my old ipod touch 5 32Gb...that for sure.

With last price update, they raised here the iPod touch price in 30 euros.

If they discontinue iPod touch, goodbye Apple, but i dont want to spend tons in a iPhone to use wifi-only. My touch 4g makes what i want and the iPad dont fit in my pocket...

What would the world be like without the iPod?

Great point on the iPod´s demise. Once upon a time before a land of iPads and iPhones, the iPod was where people listened to their music. However, the iPhone from 2007 and the iPad together correlated a recipie for the demise of the iPod.

I personally feel that the iPod 5C helped kill the iPod Touch. Now, no one really cares about battery life and, for watching movies and playing games, larger screens are more entertaining (iPad). :)

However, what I wonder is what will new teenagers get as there first Apple device when they are still prone to irresponsibility of there 1st phone and music player? Definitely would not hand my 11 year old a iPhone whether its used or new XD!

What about android fans who want a iPod as a music player and, a Android as there phone Having the best of both worlds would be better than being just in the Apple Ecosystem? Obviously a businessman would have a work and personal cell phone but, most normal people would not switch the Sim Card between a iPhone and a Android! Will these people root there phones or, lug a iPad around with them all day in a messenger bag? Imagine how awkward that would look as a guy!:p

If the iPod survives another model, I´d be shocked . I would be astounded if Apple carried over the screen sizes of the iPhone 6 range. :)

Overall, if the iPod survives or not, I am getting a Android as my next phone :D. If I have to, I'll get a iPhone once I need a personal Buesness Phone and, till then, my iPod Touch 4th generation and a future iPad just for fun will have to do!

The last changes happened in September 2012.. unless you're talking about slight colour revisions?

In June 2013, they put out the 16GB Silver and Black (rear-camera-less) model to replace the 4th Generation iPod touch. That was, by no means, a full revision, but it was a change to the line-up. Same deal in June 2014 when they replaced that model with a 16GB version of the 32GB and 64GB models sans inclusion of the loop accessory. Those were more significant than the color revision that happened in September 2013 when Space Gray became the new thing.

If it was dead, it wouldn't be for sale. I'd wait till something happens with the current model before declaring it dead...

That logic doesn't follow. The iPod classic was on sale until the day it was discontinued. It stands to reason that the same goes for any of Apple's products whether there is a successor product or not. The iPod touch, much to my own dismay, is running out of reasons to still exist in Apple's lineup.

I understand Oldmac's point of view. Yes, it was still on sale but, not seen or sold in iPhone numbers. For example, Last summer during my punisment, I had a old iPod Classic 2nd Gen and a basic flip-phone for my daily commute :(. While at work out of the whole summer, I only saw another iPod Classic ONCE! That is how popular the Classic was in 2013! By not seeing a Apple Product every day, you are under the impression it is dead (I was shocked too they were still selling it! after I learned it was discontinued)

Relating to the iPod Touch these days, it follows the same formula. You don't see it that often due to lack of sales. If you arn't interested in Electronics, you would think the iPod Touch is dead and, get a iPhone or a iPod instead!

While I am the only person I know (out of a decent multiple thousand people of all walks of life) with an iPod touch, I'm not doomsaying it because I don't see it out and about.

I'm doomsaying it because when it was most popular, it was for people that didn't own a smartphone. Nowadays, most people own smartphones. Most of the common and popular apps out there are out for both Android and iOS and run nearly identically on the two platforms. While there are a few of us that have historically used an Android phone and an iPod touch to be a part of both pocket platforms, we are not at all in the majority and there are nowhere near enough of us to make up a large enough population of users to justify to Apple to keep pouring in R&D to keep the iPod touch alive.

You've got some budget customers not on a smartphone, you've got some customers on Android with an iPod touch, and you've got some people on an iPhone that also want an iPod touch as a dedicated music player. Do the math. How many of those people do you think there are out there? How many compared to those that don't have an interest or need in the iPod touch?

But the all the major revisions have happened in September.

I just meant that we won't know if the iPod Touch is dead until the day Apple discontinues it. Just like the Classic - until they got rid of it, there was still a chance they would upgrade it.

Personally these are my last words i have to say regarding this matter, it's not my intention to troll with the same posture over and over again.

My hopes for an ipod touch 6G ended pretty much last September 2014, period (2 years after the ipod touch 5 release).
I don't hold out any hope about a future ipod touch release anymore.

Also i need to start saving money from now on for an iphone 6s 32 Gb if i want to replace my aging ipod touch 5 32 GB at the end of this year.

For those of you who still have high hopes regarding this matter i wish you good luck.

Everything you write is true but what if they are putting the finishing work on an Ipod Touch that is the ultimate gaming machine. Remember that patent for a joystick where the home screen button resides. I don't know the numbers but I believe Nintendo still does well in this area with the DS/3DS.

If they keep this product it would have to evolve into something different, maybe related to the new Apple TV as well, who knows but my intuition tells me that Apple is not quite done with the Ipod just yet.

Then the iphone would also the ultimate gaming machine which still males the touch redundant.

One more generation with touch ID and A7 please.
A 4.7" or 5.5" screen would be my main attraction. If it's still the same 4" screen, I may as well hold on to the IpT5

Well, it'd be nice to get an ultimate gaming machine at a non-ultimate plus price.

Plus, some manufacturers have spread out the functionality across several model lines as to NOT have an ultimate device. Apple is continuing with such a concept..
Ipad - large screen, but not pocketable
Ipad Mini - still large screen, but lacks power of the Ipads
IpT - no contract, pocketable, but no cellular nor power
Iph - cellular, up to date hardware, but no sheer capacity
Ipod classic - sheer capacity, physical scroll wheel, but no iOS

It would be I agree but it won't happen. The ipod dead has become redundant because of the amount of smartphones available.

So consider this... In our home we use iPod touches as remotes for our TVs in the kitchen and bedrooms. We use them with the Harmony Hubs from Logitech. Here is how slick this has become for us...

A quick camera in arms reach.
Sync with various Bluetooth speakers around the house.
Emails.
FaceTime instead of yelling for someone.
Texting instead of jumping up and grabbing our phone, which when home is often on a charger.
Quick internet searches.
Lighting control for certain lights in the home.
Two in the master. Serves dual purpose as vehicle iPods, but guess who doesn't fight over a remote?
Flashlight
Alarm Clock
Alarm monitor, we can see who is at the front door
Kids room monitor
Thermostat control
Travel apps
Start the cars with Onstar
Grocerie list in the kitchen
That's just the more useful functions.
Less wear and tear on the iPhones.

What we are finding is that if we don't have to do work, we don't sit at the computer. Another thing that was interesting is we didn't carry around our iPads all the time which we were doing to support a lot of these functions. We do have one iPad mini that does the same in the Family Room, but for other rooms these have become quite the device. I hope they stick around, or better yet get a smidge bigger.

The only thing that will kill it is unlimited cell data unlocking the ultimate in cell streaming capability, but the phone companies are having way too much fun emptying our wallets every month for a lousy amount of data. Until then, people are going to want a device to store stuff on and take it on the road for a reasonable price. A 128GB iPhone 6 is that device for some, buts it's not that device for the masses.

Unfortunately, the mass majority finds those needs met with iPads and iPhones. I'm with you on this one, but I don't think Apple is and I don't think most others are either.

I'll believe that when they offer an iPod Touch with similar specs to iPad Mini of the time.

Its been 5 years since they offered an iPod Touch with the similar specs to the current iPod Touch. And that had 256MB of ram which was half that of the iPhone 4.

Apple has decided for customers (being its usual greedy self) that they want an iPhone not an iPod. Apple has made the decision sadly.

Well, there goes any hope of a new iPod Touch. They removed the "iPod" label on the top menu bar of Apple.com Selling A5 devices at this point is just sad. I would have purchased an iPod Touch with the 6 or 6 Plus design and an A7 or A8 chip. Oh well.

iPods are found under the Music section of Apple.com now.
